When I try to insert data all I get are null values and when I update, none of the values are updated. The formview looks like its working, but just doesn't. The primary key is an identity and it auto-increments by one.

The SQL field data type is varchar. If the GV field is Null, the Insert adds the value to the SQL field. How do I keep the @nbsp; from being displayed in the cell of a data control when it is called at a later time? Do I add some more asp to my control parameter? do I add some vb code behind? Apr 13, 2010I have a Gridview showing the data on one of my tables, and when I try to edit the data in one of the columns after I click update, rather than updating the record with the new value I typed in, the rows become null as in, everything in the row I just edited disappears. This inmediatly makes my application crash because one of the fields in my table (IssueDescription) doesn't allows null values.
This is the code, which is actually 100% auto-generated from when I created the GridView control and specified in the options to implement update, delete, edit options.

What is making the rows turn into null after the update? I did some research and tried to define the Update behaviour myself using RowUpdating function. After hours of learning how to use it I got it to "work", but because the Update turns everything to null when it updates, the sqlconnection command I use to do the query sends null anyways. I can paste the C# code if you'd like to see it, though I'd rather not use it if the auto-generated by asp above can be fixed instead.

The formview is invisible by default , default mode is readonly and becomes visible only on Selecting a row in the gridview. I make it visible in the SelectedIndexchanged event of the gridview. There are Insert and update buttons present outside the formview which perform the insert and update manually using code-behind.
After an insert or update on the formview, how do I retain the gridview selection?

Oct 28, 2010I developed a web site more then a year ago with .net2.0/c#/mssql 2005. it works fine but i was asked to replace mssql with mysql.
I wrote a class to complete data access works (unfortunately, I didnt use nhibernate or other data access tools :((
I edited the class to use System.Data.Odbc objects rather than System.Data.SqlClient.
It works fine in selecting data but not manipulating data. when i try to insert new data it adds null data for all fields in the table.
in debug mode, i noticed that it might be caused by OdbcParameter but not sure.

Jul 28, 2010I'm coding my first VB web application, which allows a user to input an order number and pull up invoice and shipping data linkd to that order number.
I have the first bit down and working, where the existing data in the database is displayed in the GridViews. One of the GridViews is set up to allow data editing, and I have syntax set to make the row editable, but I'm struggling with getting the "Update" link/functionality to work. I want to assign the values in each cell to an object (ie. 'dgInvNumber' for Invoice Number), but everything I've tried (been doing a ton of Google searching for help, but no luck yet) keeps giving me an "Object reference not set
to an instance of an object" error when I click the Update link for the row of data being edited.
At this point, I don't know what syntax to use to get the edited values out of the GridView row and assigned to objects for each cell (I have a total of 10 cells that can be edited in a row).
For background info, the GridView is set up with Bound Fields. I'm using Visual Studio 2005. Alot of places I've looked talk about TextBox controls and using FindControl. Also seen some places talk about DataBoundLiteral Controls. I tried the latter with no luck (still getting error). For TextBox controls, I don't understand how to use that part, since it mentions referencing the TextBox controls declared in the EditItemTemplates of the TemplateField column fields in the GridView control. But I didn't set up anything in the EditItemTemplates (that I know of).

Dec 6, 2010I have setup my business object to have a create_date and edit_date members both datetime datatypes. My company want to display the create_date and edit_date fields in a gridview for each transaction. The problem i have is that after insterting a record it will have a valid create_date but no edit_date and when displayed in the gridview it defaults to datetime.minvalue (My default). How on earth do i show an empty field in my gridview for a null datetime field in the database?
I am using similar architecture to the Imar Spaanjaars example of a tiered solution. With a few small tweeks it has worked well for me for ages. I am passing a List<Database> to my object datasource which connects to my gridview.

Jan 13, 2011here is my latest bit of insanity. I'm using a formview control. In the insert template, I'm grabbing applicable values from my AD to populate a dropdown list. I select the user I want to insert, enter the other pieces of info required for my request and click Insert. The query responds back stating that the userid is NULL. So the big question in my mind is how can I bind userid to the dropdownlist if I'm populating that from the code behind? Here's my code behind code for that list:
