Forms Data Controls :: DropDownList Control Says Null Value On Insert?
Jan 13, 2011
here is my latest bit of insanity. I'm using a formview control. In the insert template, I'm grabbing applicable values from my AD to populate a dropdown list. I select the user I want to insert, enter the other pieces of info required for my request and click Insert. The query responds back stating that the userid is NULL. So the big question in my mind is how can I bind userid to the dropdownlist if I'm populating that from the code behind? Here's my code behind code for that list:

I have a formview on a web page, set to insert mode as default. The form view is bound to a SQLDatasource. This datasource has a custom query written to select the details for this formview. The query joins two tables to provide relevant detail and not just an ID for one of the elements on the form view.
The first tabe contains information regarding projects and the second table contains detail regarding Resources. First table has the following definition:

Basically, the user Selects a row on GV that executes an Insert into a table the GV cell values of the selected row.
The SQL field data type is varchar. If the GV field is Null, the Insert adds the value to the SQL field. How do I keep the @nbsp; from being displayed in the cell of a data control when it is called at a later time? Do I add some more asp to my control parameter? do I add some vb code behind? Here are some relevant code snippets of existing code.

I am using Visual studio 2010 express and I have a details view databinded to an sql database table. When I use the Insert option on the view it causes an error due to it trying to insert a null into the primary key field. If the Insert function does not create a new primary key entry how is it created?

In the detailsview, I set a edit item template (a bounded dropdownlist control). But in database there are some data not set to a value (null). After clicking edit button in detailsview control I get the error about the value problem (Because after populating the dropdownlist, there is no item as null in it. )How to set dropdownlist selected index when the data is "null"?

Error details:Message: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerServerErrorException: Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'idUser', table 'C:INETPUBWWWROOTVIEWS1APP_DATADBSEARCHRESULTS.MDF.dbo.UserDetails'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.I have an typed dataset xsd & adapter, where i automatically generate delete, update, insert commands. I also use SqlDataSource.The field idUser doesn't allow nulls on database level, and in the xsd I marked the following properties:AllowDBNull = false, AutoIncrement = true, AutoIncrementSeed = 0, AutoIncrementStep = 1, ReadOnly = true, Unique = trueMy code is:

How to solve the problem or where I should look for the problem?p.s. If i have in DetailsView, idUser field properties set: InsertVisible="True", ReadOnly="False" and i enter a value manually, the records successfully inserts.

This must be a common problem but I haven't been able to find an answer.I have dropdownlist that maps from a SQL foreign key, which can be NULL. Currently, I've added a "Please select..." to the top of my dropdown list and assigned it a value of 0.I know how to map from the drop down list to SQL using a CASE statement in my UpdateCommand.But how to I map from the SELECT statement to my dropdownlist? If this foreign key contains null I get "Item not in Dropdown list". I'd like to show "Please Select..." as the dropdownlist item if the SQL item contains NULL. I saw something online that says to use the value '''' for 'Please select...', but I don't think it's right, plus it doesn't work.Do I have to do something in my SELECT statement or do I have to do something on DDL.Databind?

on my aspx I have the below DDL
<asp:DropDownList ID="ColorDDL" runat="server" DataSourceID="ColorObj"
DataTextField="Size" DataValueField="BustId" Width="150px"
AppendDataBoundItems="True">
<asp:ListItem Value="-1">(Optional)</asp:ListItem>
</asp:DropDownList>
If the user does not select an item I get an exception when i call the ObjectDataSource Method and DAL as below to insert into database
ProfileObj.InsertParameters["ColorId"].DefaultValue = ColorDDL.SelectedValue.ToString();
What I want to do is insert a database NULL instead.

Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control. error when I place a drop down list into my instert item template of my listview, but I have the exact same control in my edit view and it works fine, any reason I am getting this error? I know what it means but why would it work in the edit mode, and not the insert mode?

I got this to populate the dropdownlist, but I'm not sure how to setup the codebehind to insert the selected value when I select it and hit "insert" in the detailsview.

DefaultMode="Insert"
AutoGenerateRows="False" oniteminserted="DetailsView1_ItemInserted">

I figure that this should be relatively straightforward, but I still can't get it to work. I have a gridview and a detailsview to set up shifts for students and teachers. I would like to be able to insert new shifts using a detailsview. I will limit the students, teachers and location to items that are in a dropdownlist. The problem is that when I handle the iteminserting event. the e.values collection doesn't contain all of the fields I want to populate. How do I add the new fields to the list. This is my codebehind:
Sub On_Inserting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As DetailsViewInsertEventArgs)

I have a dropdownlist in the edititemtemplate of a detailsview. The dropdownlist is bound with an objectdatasource. The detailsview is bound to a seperate objectdatasource which connects it to the insert method. When the page loads the dropdownlist is bound properly. However, when I make a selection and select insert I get the following error: Could not find a property named 'DeptID' on the type specified by the DataObjectTypeName property in ObjectDataSource 'objCurrentProduct'. I've tried to remove the SelectedValue='<%# Bind("DeptID") %> attribute. I can then insert without an exception being thrown but the selected value of the dropdown is not recognized. Here is the code:

I thought this one would be easy, but no go. What I am trying to do is the following: I have two DropDownLists in my InsertItemTemplate, each bound to its own datasource. After the fields in this form have been filled out and the ItemInserting event fires, I rebind the ListView to its datasource, but the DropDownLists turn out empty. I tried to bind them in the ItemInserting event and it seems they get filled, but nothing shows up in them when the page loads. I also tried to fill them in the ItemDataBound event, but the e.Item.ItemType == InsertItem doesn't do it.
How can I fill those DropDownLists?

I have a Gridview which I'm populating through code behind. A couple of columns of the gridview I've set up to be drop down lists. What I want, is that when I run my Insert query, it takes the drop down list selected value, finds the appropriate ID and uses that ID as part of the insert query.
Below is my select and insert query.

I am trying to change the textboxes in the FormView insert template to dropdownlists but they keep setting the parameters to null. Here's what I have:
[Code]....
In Page_Load
CType(frmSurvey.FindControl("ddlYearOfQualification"), DropDownList).Items.Add(New ListItem("2010", "2010"))
CType(frmSurvey.FindControl("ddlYearOfQualification"), DropDownList).Items.Add(New ListItem("2009", "2009"))
and in the SqlDataSource
InsertCommand="INSERT INTO [tblSurvey] (... [YearOfQualification] ...) VALUES ( ... @YearOfQualification ... )
And in insert parameters:
<asp:Parameter Name="YearOfQualification" Type="Int16" />
And the insert fails with YearOfQualification as null. If I sue the standard textbox:
<asp:TextBox ID="YearOfQualificationTextBox" runat="server"
Text='<%# Bind("YearOfQualification") %>' />

I have a gridview displaying the items in the shoping cart. I want the customer to be able to change the size of the item he or she has chosen to buy. I have therefore added a dropdownlist inside the edititemtemplate. I would like to display all sizes that are available in the database in the dropdownlist, but don't know what the sql-statement would look like.
The database looks something like this:
Item
PK: ItemID
ItemAttribute
PK: ItemAttributeID
FK: ItemID
:AttributeName (Size, color etc)
AttributeValue
PK: AttributeValueID
FK: ItemAttributeID
:AttributeDescription (Small, Large etc)
ShopingCart
PK:ShopingCartID
FK:ItemID
FK:UserID
:ItemSize
The dropdownlist looks like this:
[Code]....
The problem is it's display all the other item's attributes and not what kind of attributes that is left, for example Medium, Large, X-Large. how to implement the sizes into a dropdownlist and the sql-statement looked like this:

I created a formview that I am using for data input (DefaultMode=Insert)
One of the objects I have is a text box (see below)
[code]....
When I click submit I get a message that I cannot insert a Null into the field IntershipNumAvailable. This makes sense since I made this field a required field in the database.
How do I get the form to recognize that the user selected item is the one I want to write to the database?
What changes do I need to make here? Do I need to make changes to my parameter list?
