I am using Visual studio 2010 express and I have a details view databinded to an sql database table. When I use the Insert option on the view it causes an error due to it trying to insert a null into the primary key field. If the Insert function does not create a new primary key entry how is it created?

For two of the fields, I want to pre-populate the field with information. Specifically, I have a vb script with a few functions to query Active Directory to return the user's name based upon their user id. This script works fine.I call the functions for the user name like this:

I have a DetailsView for inserting values and currently the columns are center aligned. What I want is to have my "label" right aligned and my "text box/dropdown box" left aligned.
Something like:
Name: _______________
Address: __________________________
Phone: __________
Insert Cancel
If I change the alignment to left for both, the Insert and Cancel buttons on the bottom of the control also shift to the left, and I'd like them to stay centered.
I have a vb.net page that has a editable detailsview. When a user wants to erase the data for a field, they highlight the data, and delete/backspace over it, and click update. However, the original data is still saved. If they are replacing the current data with new data, that works fine and updates/saves correctly. This problem only happens when the current data needs to be removed.

View 3 RepliesI have a form and stored procedure that inserts the data from the form. It works fine except that if a field isn't filled in it doesn't insert a NULL into sql it inserts "".
I've tried a few different ways but none seem to insert NULL, the one below still inserts "", can anyone point me in the right direction.

So question from a Newbie !So I have a web page with a Details View component for Inserting data into a table.One of the fields is a date/time which I want to be now().SO I guess there are 2 ways of doing it - either I populate the date/time field in the form with a variable that represent now() and make it Read Only so the user can't change it or I somehow make a hidden variable (ie not displayed in the form) that writes a date/time of now() into the database whenever an INSERT takes place.What is the best way and how do I do either of them ? How do I make one of the fields in the INSERT form of the Details View a preset variable ?

here is my latest bit of insanity. I'm using a formview control. In the insert template, I'm grabbing applicable values from my AD to populate a dropdown list. I select the user I want to insert, enter the other pieces of info required for my request and click Insert. The query responds back stating that the userid is NULL. does insert, update & delete to SQL express using the details view. But to complete my project, I need to add a button that will create an event to restore the very last record inserted in SQL and display it back into the details view for minor modification
and nserted again as the newest record with the mod. I'm doing this so user, doesn't need to re-key-in redundant information, like names, original date & time etc, and just make modification on the description of the last record.....

I have a form with many form fields and controls, with some offering an "other" if a value does not meet the needs for the user. How can I bind the sql insert so that it will take the ddl selection along with the txt field selection for the "other" value? Even if the txt field is empty it should not be a big deal since the ddl would provide something other than null. Since the column in the db does not allow nulls. I'm using asp.net (vb) 3.5 sp1

The SQL field data type is varchar. If the GV field is Null, the Insert adds the value to the SQL field. How do I keep the @nbsp; from being displayed in the cell of a data control when it is called at a later time? Do I add some more asp to my control parameter? do I add some vb code behind? I have a formview on a web page, set to insert mode as default. The form view is bound to a SQLDatasource. This datasource has a custom query written to select the details for this formview. The query joins two tables to provide relevant detail and not just an ID for one of the elements on the form view.
