I've created details masters before but can't remember what links the two together. When an item is selected with a master, such as a gridview, what is used to tell the details view which record to display? Is it the DataKeyNames property?

View 3 RepliesSite basically has datbase results which can be sorted on a page. each record in the recordset also has a link to a Detail Page with more information on that item.
I would like to put some links "previous" and "next" on the details page so that a visitor does not have to go back to the results page and choose the next item in the list.
I've seen this on other sites but just can't seem to grasp it. Database results are done using ASP.NET
Anyone have any pointers? or if you have an asking price I'm all for that as well as long as I learn from it. I can provide url and code if needed.
I'm trying to get a record to show up in a details view as part of a Master Details. I was able to get this to work by setting the visibility to true for the Details View in the Page Load event. I now want the details view to show up when the Select button is clicked in the GridView's template field using the onClick event for the button. I don't seem to be assigning the correct properties to get this to work though. what property I should use with this? I know I have to get it from the GridView and assign it to the details but haven't gotten it to work. this is the GridView:

When we edit a record and click the update button, I want the page to refresh the gridview and detailsview. View 3 RepliesI am having a problem with the gridview and formview. I have a gridview setup to show products and have a select button to clock on to give you the details of the product in a formview. I have the gridview setup for paging at 5 rows. In the page.aspx.vb I have on the SelectedIndexChanged event

This all works great until I go to the next page in the gridview and try to select a product on that page and the form view does not sync up. I really need a soultion for this. I could use the 2 page soultion for the master/details view however I would like to avoid it if possible...
I have on a page a gridview that can be filtered with one text box. I set up the gridview to show select and wanted to then connect a details view so that when you selected a row the entire details would show up. When I run it I get this error. Data keys must be specified on GridView 'GridView1' before the selected data keys can be retrieved. Use the DataKeyNames property to specify data keys.

View 1 Repliesalmost typical master-detail scenario except the 'detail' data I want to display below the gridview will be coming from both the table that is bound to the gridview (master) and a related table.
simplified example: tableMain with field1, field2, field3 bound to master gridview. I need to select a row from the master gridview and have a form display below with field4 and field5 from tableMain, as well as all fields of tableDetail where field1 of tableMain equals field1 of tableDetail.
Is this what a 'formview' control is for? or do I just arrange my own controls to accommodate the data? Would a formview work considering my source will be partially from both the main table and the detail table? This is one of the scenarios were I know I could come up with something using none of the databound controls (except the master gridview), but I want to use the controls provided when it makes sense to do so, and utilize their benefits etc...
I have a vb.net page that has a editable detailsview. When a user wants to erase the data for a field, they highlight the data, and delete/backspace over it, and click update. However, the original data is still saved. If they are replacing the current data with new data, that works fine and updates/saves correctly. This problem only happens when the current data needs to be removed.

I have a table that has worktype and that is captured when certain records are entered. So if a record exists with that value, then i want to disable the "Edit" link for that record within my gridview.
I want to provide them access to add more worktypes, but if they want to edit a worktype, i need to make sure its not used anywhere in the other tables, before they can edit it. For now atleast, because i will need to allow full editing and deletion functions for this table. how to do this or maybe suggestions on other things i can do to give them full functionality?

View 6 RepliesI have a grid view (using sqldatasource & C#) which returns no rows. By design asp.net does not show header/footer. I looked at couple of sites and suggestions and found it to be too complex. Nothing was simple. The one I found was to create a empty datatable, insert rows and bind it to the gridview. But that code does notwork for me because I am using sqldatasource and using datatable gives error.I decided to just add the following to empty item template.
