Apr 8, 2010I'm trying to create a ShoutBox for my site, and for those of you who are not familiar with shoutboxes, they are chat boxes on websites that users can post live messages on, and the other uses will see their message and be able to respond. I didn't find any good ones online, so I started to write my own. I'm doing it with an XML, but I want the user to be able to post messages using a textbox I added (txtMessage) and the button (cmdPostMessage), which should add a new item to the XML file, and all the other uses will receive that message (their xmlDataSource and the DataList will PostBack every second or something like that). It is able to read messages, but not send.I am however facing three problems:
1- I need to find a way for the user's input to be added to the XML.
2- I need to find a way for the current logged-in username to be found, and added to the XML, and also detect if no user is logged in, in which case the user wil receive an alert saying "Please log in to post messages to the ShoutBox" and redirect them to the login page.

Jan 14, 2010I need to create a function which is like an "Add friend" function. first of all, as a logged in user, I am able to search for a list of other users in the website. after which i can click a hyperlink and it brings me to a page where i can type a message and send it to my friend through email. That message will also show up at my friend's homepage in a textbox accompanied by an Accept and a Reject button for friend to accept or deny friend request. the question is: how do i make the control (the texbox with the accept and reject button) such that it's a "template" and that it will show up at the homepage according to the number of friend request i have. say if i have 3 request, so i'll have 3 of the template at my homepage.

The first column is the select button, 2nd to the 4th are just displaying of data which I have used HTMLdecode to set it to disable the htmlencode so that I could display 2 lines in the gridview. However, after enabling htmldecode. my 2 fields, the select button and the text box columns are not able to be displayed out.

Apr 12, 2010I have a gridview that holds a bunch of companies (600 of them). I have a textbox under the gridview so people could type in a partial name of the company and basically do a search on the gridview. My problem is that when I run the page the only thing that shows is my search textbox, I'm assuming this is because I have setup the SQLDataSource to filter based on this textbox. I'd like the grid to be filled when the user opens the page and only filtered when the user type something in the textbox and hits go. Does anyone have an example of that in VB that I could look at?

Jan 11, 2010I have this working on another project I have but cannot figure out why I can't get it to work on another. I have a dropdownlist box with employee names. When an employee is selected, I display the data (address, phone, email, etc.) in a series of textboxes. User can make changes and then click on an "Update" button where I attempt to update the database with the changes using the sqldatasource. The code works without any errors, but the database does not update.

Aug 16, 2010I'm here again to share a problem that I'm fighting against for days. I'm developing an eCommerce Cart.
Within it, I have a repeater, inside of ITEMTEMPLATE I put one TextBox for product quantities and one Button, for update the quantity inserted on that textbox.
When the customer clicks over the Button, it fires a function that gets the content of the TextBox and do an update on my Database.
It works perfetly when it is done with the mouse click. But I need to fires the update function WHITHOUT the manually click event. When the customer just put the mouse out of the TextBox (onblur event), I want to fires that function.

I'm stuck in server side code..how to pull the data..in store procedure I'm passing two parameters val1 and val2. val1 gets data from DDL1 and val2 gets data when user types in textbox1 and it has to validate the text...see the code below mentioned and tell me how to pass the params and get the data in gridview...

Forms Data Controls :: Handling A Null Value In Textbox FormView (on Button Click To Calculate Totals)
Mar 17, 2011I have a rather large formview that asks for a variety of input values (physical totals vs pos report totals). I have created vb code to calculate the differences and subtotals of various types prior to inserting the data so people can check for entry errors.
Its a closing reconciliation form. Here's the problem: If they forget to enter 0 in a field that doesn't have any totals, a big ugly error message displays. I would like to avoid this. I can tell them until I am blue in the face to remember to enter 0 and not leave any blank fields, but realistically its going to happen and I need to handle it in the programming.
I have been struggling to either default the values to zero to start with, replace a null textbox with 0 before the calculate runs...but I can't get anything to really work. What is the best way to handle this?

I can't seem to find the right combination of programming to account for the "" string to be 0 so that it will add or subtract values in my calculate. I have my sql table setup with default values of 0 so if a field is left blank it will be entered into the database as 0 and not null. It is really just for my inserting of a reconciliation and the running of Calculate Totals to double check their work prior to inserting into the database.

if i click on edit imagebutton, i need to add textboxes dynamically in all the columns of that row except first 2 column. And if i click on Update imagebutton i need to retrieve the textbox values.we can add template field column for textboxes also, but why i am sticking to this method is.. the number of columns changes depending on the selecteditem from the dropdownlist. Eg: If i select india from dropdownlist the number of columns in the gridview would be 4 and if i select UK from dropdownlist the number of columns would be 9 likewise.
