I was going through a website I've taken over and came across this section in one of the pages:
<a href="javascript:window.location='<%=GetSignOutUrl()%>';">
// img
</a>
Apparently anyone who has ever used the site without javascript would not be able to log out properly (surprisingly enough, this has never come up).
So the first thing that comes to mind is
<a href="<%=GetSignOutUrl()" onclick="javascript:window.location='<%=GetSignOutUrl()%>';">
// img
</a>
Then I realized I don't know why I'm keeping the javascript call around at all. I'm just a little confused as to why it would have been written like that in the first place when a regular link would have worked just fine. What benefit does window.location have over just a regular link?
This is also the only place in the website I've seen something like this done (so far).
Edit: The programmer before me was highly competent, which is actually why I was wondering if there was something I wasn't taking into account or if he just made a simple oversight.

I am trying to get an idea on the best way to do the following:
[1]I have a list of object type (my_object_type), one of the my_object_type members is called SortOrder, which corresponds to the location within the list.
example of List<my_object_type>
SortOrder=1 | item2="something" | item3="something"
SortOrder=2 | item2="something" | item3="something"
SortOrder=3 | item2="something" | item3="something"
SortOrder=4 | item2="something" | item3="something"
SortOrder=5 | item2="something" | item3="something"
SortOrder=6 | item2="something" | item3="something"
[2]I bind this List<my_object_type> to a GridView, that looks something like the following when displayed:
[1]|[something]|[something]|MOVE TO [DropDownList 1-6]|[Move Button]
[2]|[something]|[something]|MOVE TO [DropDownList 1-6]|[Move Button]
[3]|[something]|[something]|MOVE TO [DropDownList 1-6]|[Move Button]
[4]|[something]|[something]|MOVE TO [DropDownList 1-6]|[Move Button]
[5]|[something]|[something]|MOVE TO [DropDownList 1-6]|[Move Button]
[6]|[something]|[something]|MOVE TO [DropDownList 1-6]|[Move Button]
[3]When I select a drop down list item from column 4 of the GridView and then select the MOVE BUTTON, I would like to be able to move an object to a specific NEW location - basically reorder the List<my_object_type> and then BIND the new List Order back to the GridView.... (example: current list item #3 -> select #5 from drop down list -> press Move Button ||| then BIND changes back to the GridView)
Question: any recommendations about the best way of doing this within the gridview, etc...?

I have almost got this all working but one thing. What i am doing is SELECTING a number of details from a table which is for job vacancies. I am then displaying the job_name, a short description about the job and finally the location's the job is available in..If you look on this page:http://kidsunlimited.co.uk/vacancies_test.aspx
You will see a list of Vacancies shown BY job name. The problem occurs when the job is available in more than once location. Take a look at the Cook vacancy. It should be reading as Cook, then the description and then location which in this case there are 2.But instead it mixes them up and displays one location before the description and one after..This is the code i have :

The problem is on this line i think:

using vb.net/asp.net 2005
I have a gridview with columns (pseudo-code):
<COLUMNS>
AuthorFirstname
AuthorLastName
BookTitle
YearPublished
</COLUMNS>
what I would like to do is to only show the AuthorFirstName and AuthorLastName columns for the first row of each author. I am easily doing this with:
[Code]....
However the issue that I'm seeing now is the formatting what happens is that after the first row that the Author names are hidden but then the BookTitle and YearPublished become the new cell(0) and cell(1) respectively which means that book and year are displaying underneath the author names columns. so my goal is to do 2 things:
1 have BookTitle and YearPublished render under the correct headers and
2. For the second row and after I would like the cell to appear the same as the background, I dont want the user to be seeing what looks like an empty cell or textbox there.

I need to have a GridView show up at some precise place on a page. I tried to do this by defining the GridView into a cell of a table. It did not work ... the GridView populates OK, however it shows up under my table.
Is there any way I can make this GridView show up at the right of my table and span the 4 or 5 rows I have in this table?

I have a repeater in my page as follows:
<asp:Repeater ID="RepeaterVacancies" runat="server">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:TableCell CssClass="evenTd" runat="server">
<asp:HyperLink runat="server" NavigateUrl="Vacancies.aspx?VID=<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,'id')%>"
ID="Hyperlink1">
<%# Container.ItemIndex + 1 %>
</asp:HyperLink>
</asp:TableCell>
......
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:repeater>
when I loaded the page, the numbers come fine, but the links are not evaluated well: Instead of linking to Vacancies.aspx?VID=170 for example, the link comes this way: [URL]

I have this simple project which needs to show location on a google map by pulling data from the DB.I am using asp.net, mysql DB, google map and i found out from some website that i needed to use ajax.
The process is like this
1. I have a event form where i have multiple fields to fill in and it includes a Location/Venue fields which i can enter a location by Name(Not the Co-ordination). I am located in Singapore. So all fields will be stored into the DB.
2. I have a webpage displaying a table of the data from the same DB, and it comes with a embedded Google Map. On the table, the value of the Location column will be Hyperlinked, and when i click it, it will act as a search query in the embedded google map and locate the address without reloading the page again(which i believe i gotta use iframe?)

I'm not even sure if this is the correct approach for this -
I have a DB that stores information, as well as a location to where images are stored
ie ProductImage = ~/ProductImages/BulkRetail.JPG
I'm using a repeater to list all the products, which works fine for all the labels I use but not for the image location. I'm using something like this, but it doesn't work:
<asp:Image runat="server" ImageAlign="Left" ImageUrl='<%# Eval("ProductImage") %>' />

Do you know if it's possible to add a button in a gridview that when clicked, downloads a document listed in the gridview to a specific location, and then opens the document that was just downloaded? (It's too many steps for the users to right-click, do a file save as, save the document, and then open it). So, I need to accomplish a lot with this little button. Also, I'd need to specify a directory on the C drive to save it too.
