Getting A File From The Client To The Server In Mvc?
Feb 24, 2011
Getting a file from the client to the server in asp.net mvcWhat is the best way to get a file from the client to the server in asp.net mvc?Will hosting allow you to save a file to their server these days or do you have to save the file on their server? Or is cloud storage the only way (of course then how do you process the file without getting it from the cloud).Also, are there any really good examples of uploading a file, reading it and putting it in the database for asp.net mvc?

I'm trying to do the following in ASP.NET (with c#):
1. On page Load, download an XML file from a different website to the IIS server, in a subdirectory of the application directory called "downloadedFiles"
I know that WebClient.DownloadFile() can download a file, but this only seems to download the file to the client's machine. I am interested in downloading it to the actual IIS server (so that it can be utilized throughout the lifetime of more than one session). Does anyone know how this could be performed?
Specifically, I'm trying to download an XML file from a website (as an example: [URL]) . How could I download that XML file onto my actual IIS server?

I read the thread on this topic and tried using "Process.start(mypdf.pdf)" to open the PDF file. I was able to get "Process.Start()" to work perfectly within VS2008 on the built-in server but not IIS; when I am in the development environment it works great, but when I deploy the application and run it it does not work. What happens when I run outside of the development environment, I can export the PDF file to the directory on the IIS server, and the client can also delete the file from the IIS server, BUT, inbetween the export and the delete commands, I have the Process.start command so that the user can open the file and do whatever they need to do; print it, print partially or save it locally ect.
After it exports the file to the server when the exectue "Process.start" occurs, the screen just blinks and there is no error message? I tried many options using Process.StartInfo but no luck. I also tried to to use Process.Start() with a text file (.txt) and had the same result, so it doesn't look like an adobe acrobat problem. I do have acrobat running on the clients as well as the server. I don't think it is a security issue being the exporting and deleting work. Is this the wrong command to use? The web server is IIS7, I am using VS2008 VB.NET and it is a Web application. I need to demo this to the client in 4 days and I need to have this working.

Basically I have to generate a rather large XPS document serverside and send this back to the client.
The issue I have whilst trying to do this is because the XPS document needs to be created on a STA thread, so either the response is sent back before the async operation is complete (in which case I can't attach the file using the transferfile method) OR I have to wait until the Async thread has completed and then I can send the file using the transferfile method (but this leaves the current page locked out for quite a while).

I am using the code below to enable clients to download a .csv file from my server.
The problem I am having is that when the file is saved to the client computer the file name is prefixed and suffixed with an underscore which leads to a file type of .csv_ which is obviously not a recognised file type.
How can I strip the underscores from the file name at the transmit stage?
Dim FileName As String = LstBox1.SelectedItem.ToString
Dim FilePath As String = "~/temp" & FileName
Response.Clear()
Response.ContentType = "text/csv"
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" & FileName & "")
Response.TransmitFile(FilePath)
Response.End()

i am trying to create an aspx page where i can directly upload a file from the client to the server without user intervention. I would like to do something like when the user specifies the file path in the url, that particular file must be uploaded to the server.
example: ht.tp://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/File_upload/File_Uploader.aspx?upload=C:/sample.csv&type=csv
The user can change the value after upload and what ever file he is specifying, it will be needed to be uploaded onto the server which is located at xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
my sample code is:
[Code]....
this is just a trial to check if the csv file is being created on the server or not, and it is not being created.
i just want to copy the file on the client side to the server side and it has to be only by the aspx page in the format specified above.

I have written the following code that successful ftps a file to the proper location as long as the file exists on the server itself....
However, I need the code to pull the file contents from the client computer, not the server.
Here is the code:

When I deploy this application to my staging server and test it, it's looking for the files on the staging server...not my local computer.

If I have something like the following:
<asp:TextBox id="test" runat="sever"></asp:TextBox>
<asp:RequiredFieldValidator runat="server" ControlToValidate="test"
ErrorMessage="Required"></asp:RequiredFieldValidator>
<asp:Label runat="server" id="lblStatus"></asp:Label>
if in the code behind, I set the label to "You must enter a value if the textbox is empty" to validate it on the server side and this is fine, but if javascript is enabled, I don't want to show the client side validation and the server side label together. Is this something where I would just have to disable the client-side validators if javascript was enabled?

To my understanding the clinet side can only send data to the server either by get or post. so basically either through query string (get) or through body of the page (post).
So when we upload a file from client machine and send it to server, what exactly is happening behind the scenes? are we doing a post?

We've got a client app which connects using TCP to a server. Additionally, the client app makes use of .NET remoting to talk to another piece of locally running code.
I'm tasked with creating a "Client Simulator" to do some testing, where we'd need to have 100's of clients connected simultaneously to the server. Ideally, this would work out great if I were to run each client in it's own space, such as a VM, but this is not logistically feasible.
how to handle this? Is there a tool that could do something like this? Or some sort-of .NET concept I could use?

I want to access one image file residing in C: of the client's machine. I know with the help of file upload control (or say input type=file), this would be easy. Due to nature of my application (Its a KIOSK application), user is not expected to select file. I am just wondering how should I implement reading file without using file upload control. I want to store this file in Images folder of server. I am beginner to WCF. Should I look towards WCF?
