it is possible to change dynamically the session time for currently logged user. I'm communicating with a WebService which does a long-running task, and while the it sends the final response, I don't want the user to be logged out.

Suppose I have a string in U.S datetime format, "2/25/2010" and the server is on U.S East Coast with a timezone offset of "-5". When I convert the string via
Convert.ToDateTime("2/25/2010").ToUniversalTime(), it saved as "2/25/2010 5:00:00 AM" (which is correct as local server time for it is 2/25/2010 12:00:00 AM"
Now, suppose my user is in the U.S central time with a timezone offset of "-6", what I want to do is convert it approriately and when this user from central time do "Convert.ToDateTime("2/25/2010").ToUniversalTime()" type of statement, the datetime saved will be "2/25/2010 6:00:00 AM"

I'm using sessions to track user name. I assign Session["userName"] in my login procedure. The sessionn gets timeout in about 15 minutes. What I need to do is, if the session timeouts I need to redirect the page to the Default.aspx page.
How can I do this? Any code example would be great.

i create a composite control as can be seen in code below, and add this control to webform, assign FormView1 to the HeaderControlName property, Run the page, the system will generate parse error message :
Cannot create an object of type 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.FormView' from its string representation 'FormView1' for the 'HeaderControlName' property. However, if i don't assign FormView1 in design screen and manually (through coding) assign FormView1 to the custom control on init, it works as expected.
custom control
public class CmdTest : CompositeControl
{
public virtual FormView HeaderControlName
{
get
{
object oObject = ViewState["HeaderControlName"];
return (oObject == null) ? null : (FormView)oObject;
}
set
{
ViewState["HeaderControlName"] = value;
}
}
protected override void CreateChildControls(
{
Controls.Clear();
Button xx = new Button();
Controls.Add(xx);
}
}
webpage.aspx (assign FormView1 in design time, it will generate error)
<Utils:CmdTest ID="CmdTest1" runat="server" HeaderControlName="FormView1" />
webpage.aspx (didn't assign FormView1 in ASPX, but assign it on Init Code, it works)
<Utils:CmdTest ID="CmdTest1" runat="server" oninit="CmdTest1_Init" />
Webpage.aspx.cs
protected void BsCmdTest1_Init(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
CmdTest1.HeaderControlName = FormView1;
}

I have written a SP which maintains users log in and log out history,it works fine when any user logs in or clicks on log out, problem is that as per need its not to allowed to keep the screen idle for 1 minute or more then in the log out column Null value is passed.
SP
Create proc usp_trackuserlogindetails
@username varchar(50) = null,
@command int = 0
as
BEGIN
if(@command = 0)
begin
insert into userlog (USERNAME,LOGIN,LOGOUT) values (@username,Getdate(),Null)
[Code] ....
Here when user manually clicks the log out button then 1(table above) is the output.
When user leaves the screen idle then after 1 minute the page goes to the Login.aspx page if the user tries to do something on the current page,here 2(table above) is the output can i store some hard core value instead of Null like Session expire or the exact session expires time.

I've used the built-in wizard in Visual Web Developer 2008 to create a simple login system. I'd like to get hold of the logged in user's ID, but I'm not sure how. Peeking in the ASPNETDB.MDF in the table aspnet_Users, the column appears to be called "UserId". I gave it a go:
Response.Write("ID: " + Session["UserId"]);
but it's coming up blank. How do I do this? (This is not for a live project, no need to point out the sillyness in using the wizard.)

Is it possible to control the behaviour of ASP.NET when the Session has expired? It seems that the default behaviour is sending the user to the website root. The desired effect would be to send the user to a custom "Session Expired" page.To clarify, it's the SessionState that's expiring (set the timeout to 1 minute to quickly test it):
<sessionState mode="InProc" timeout="1"></sessionState>
The authentication cookie timeout is way higher, to avoid any mix-up:
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="SessionExpired.aspx" slidingExpiration="true" name=".ttpASPXAUTH" timeout="58" protection="All"></forms>
</authentication>

I'm using VS2010 and I'm trying to follow along with these videos:
[URL] and the guy in the video is using Visual Web Developer Express and when he creates a new website it's all nice and simple with a bare bones Default webpage and that's cool. Well, me in my Visual Studio 2010 when I create a new project I get this elaborate "My ASP.NET Application" page with an About page and a Login page and CSS and Jquery and it's just too, too much. Now, of course I could just create an empty ASP.NET application, but that goes too far the other way; I have to start from scratch and add the default page myself and try to reproduce exactly what the code in the video looks like and I can't really see the screen that well. Is there any way I could change my default template to what the gentleman in the video uses?

I have two websites both of which will share the same users in a SQL DB for membership. The first site is the standard site while the other is a subdomain for admins.
If the admin logs onto the either site, I don't want that person to have to re log on to either site if he/she is sent there via navigation. To the user it would just seem like one site. Because user would be using same session, if they log off either site they would have to reauthenticate.
How would I go about passing this information?

I have what I think is a very common scenario but I've searched quite some time now and can't seem to find the answer! I have a standard web app that has a web.config in the root directory. I have some account management pages in a subdirectory called Accounts. Any timeouts at the root level work fine - the user is redirected to Default.aspx as indicated in my Forms authentication. My problem is when the users are in the Accounts (or any) subdirectory and they go off for coffee and the app times out. On the next click, they get an error saying "Accounts/Default.aspx" cannot be found. And Default.aspx is not there as it sits at the root level. It's trying to redirect them to the default login URL as defined in the web.config file but that doesn't work when the user is sitting in a subdirectory. I don't want to put a default page in this any every sub directory. I have tried putting a web.config file in the subdirectory but it throws the error about machine to application level/IIS.
