How To Compare IIS & Cassini As Production Servers
Jan 1, 2010
I have an ASP.NET website which is running currently on IIS. Now I want to move that site to run on Cassini.
What are the advantages of Cassini over IIS? What are its disadvantages?
What are your experiences using Cassini as a production web-server?

I am trying to set up my web site on a stand alone server using Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6 which will access SQL server database (2008) on windows 2008 R2 server (also not in the domain) I am using form authentication and I have configured a custom identity account in IIS6. The local account is on both servers with same password and I have registered the account using aspnet_regiis.exe -ga The application pool in my iis6 has the custom local account set as the identity and my web.config file has the appropriate tags in the system.web element <identity impersonate="true" />
The problem is the local account does not seem to get passed to the sql server. Right now my iis settings are anonymous access (using the local acct vs isr) and no authentication specified under that - I did try Integrated and basic but it prompts for the username and password which I do not want. One article I read stated this: windows authentication does not support delegation (passing credentials from one server to another) and is limited to the one hop rule, only a primary token can be passed to a second server. windows
authentication on iis (all versions) gives the thread a secondary(impersonation) token which can not be used to access any network resouce

When attempting to place controls in different content areas using Masterpages and trying to use a compare validator, I get the error: Unable to find control id 'txtStartDate' referenced by the 'ControlToCompare' property of 'cvlDate'. I have also attempted to set it within the c# code behind in page load: cvlDate.ControlToCompare = txtStartDate.ID and by using findControl there must be an easy way to achieve this?
<asp:Content ID="Content4" ContentPlaceHolderID="leftForm" Runat="Server">
<asp:Label ID="lblStartTimeEnter" runat="server" Text="Start Time:" Width="100px"/>
<asp:TextBox ID="txtStartTime"runat="server" MaxLength="50" Width="250"/>
</asp:content>
<asp:Content ID="Content4" ContentPlaceHolderID="rightForm" Runat="Server">
<asp:label ID="lblEndDateEnter" CssClass="formMargin labelInput" runat="server" Text="End Date:" Width="100px"/>
<asp:TextBox ID="txtEndDate" CssClass="formMargin" runat="server" MaxLength="20" Width="250" ClientIDMode="Static"/>
<asp:CompareValidator ID="cvlDate" runat="server" ControlToValidate="txtEndDate" ControlToCompare="txtStartDate" Operator="GreaterThan" Type="Date" ErrorMessage="Start Date must be before End Date" > *</asp:CompareValidator>

App works fine in IIS on Windows 7 on my dev machine. Trying to debug on a client machine running XP and VS2008 and the app works ok running on Cassini, however when I select IIS I am getting a 403 forbidden error. Anonymous access is switched on in ISS. Can anyone help work out why it won't work in IIS?

I'm developing a web site in a high-security environment. For example, we use CAC cards to authenticate users over SSL. The site is a mix of VB.NET and C# on .NET 3.5 with some AJAX. The AJAX parts are now calling web services for things like Cascading Drop Down Lists. We've been running VS2008 configured on our local PCs to use IIS instead of the default server (Cassini). However, some security policies were rolled out to the desktops over the weekend and, suddenly, we're not allowed to run IIS on our PCs anymore. I already have some of our IT people trying to appeal for waivers for developers. In the meantime, I need to find a way to keep developing. If I turn off the SSL requirement to the 'secure' part of the application (locally, my PC only) I can serve up some of the pages (using Cassini) when I hit "F5", but pages with web services just bring up "server application unavailable". I need to be able to add some more functions into the existing web services, among other things, so the ability to single-step through the code is still a necessity. I'm sure someone who is limited to using Cassini has found a way to Build/Debug pages in VS2008 when webservices are involved. As it turns out, some links had "HTTPS://" hard-coded in them (I inherited these). Changing the link to "~folderpage.aspx" allowed Cassini to properly serve things up.

I'm experiencing some really odd timeout issues when running a ASP.NET 2.0 project on Cassini on localhost, and I don't have enough data to get a clue of what's going on.
Is there a way to monitor localhost traffic to Cassini, either using some specific development tool or a general-purpose monitoring app such as fiddler?
Just to pre-empt some answers I'm already aware of:
Normally I can use the well-known dot-hack for using fiddler to monitor localhost traffic, but with Cassini I get the following error message in the browser:
[Fiddler] Connection to localhost. failed. Exception Text: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it ::1:3213
Fiddler also listens to localhost on http://ipv4.fiddler:port, and I can intercept the traffic. But when I do this the timeout issues don't occur!
Edit: Oops. This question had already been asked... Twice.. Didn't come up on search or . The solution found in the second thread is to use the dot-hack with ip-address (http://127.0.0.1.:port/ instead of "localhost". This question may be closed.

I've just run into one of the problems of using the integrated dev server (Cassini) in VS and would like to see if there are any solutions.We're using asp.net authentication to secure the site. However, Cassini runs in integrated pipeline mode, meaning that requests for all files go through the asp.net isapi. The result of this is that it's securing files that would otherwise not be secured in a production environment (.htm .js .css etc..).
Now I understand that we can run the project on a local IIS instance, but we would like to avoid this if possible. But, because of the problem above, this is looking like the only solution.Does anybody have any ideas about how to get Cassini working with authentication that can be easily moved to a production environment when ready. (I'd also like to avoid having a different development web.config that specifically allows access to these files).

anybody comment on the differences between IIS & Cassini in terms of performance and memory consumption?am using VS 2010 on a Windows XP SP2 developing a silverlight app.My machine has a 3 GB DDR2 RAM but still debugging is a pain and cassini keeps on crashing and I need to restart my machine 3-4times a day which is a considerable loss of productivity.

I am trying to run a WCF Data Service using the ASP.Net Dev server (aka Cassini). When I hit F5 I get the following message in my browser:
Request Error
The server encountered an error processing the request. See server logs for more details. However, I don't know where Cassini puts its server logs. Does anyone out there know?

I'm debugging an ASP.NET MVC 2 application running on .NET 4.0 (Windows 7), currently inside of Cassini, the Visual Studio Debugging Web Server.All was running well, when I suddenly was having exceptions in my Application.EndRequest handler. After investigating into this issue, I found the reason was that Cassini was calling EndRequest on a different thread than BeginRequest (then, a ThreadStatic variable which was set in BeginRequest and used in the EndRequest handler was null, since on this thread, BeginRequest was never called).What could be the reason for Cassini to execute BeginRequest and EndRequest on different threads?I know the reason could be an 'Async' Page directive (see Do ASP.NET Requests always BeginRequest and EndRequest on the same thread? , but I have no 'Async' attribute in my Page directives).

I am trying to check for a condition such that a date in an input control (textbox) is not greater from a date 1 years from current date(exactly) and also it should not be less than a date 1 year back from current date. for eg. if today's date is "21/dec/1990" then usen cannot enter a date in textbox which is less than 21/dec/89 and it should not be greater than 21/dec/1991. for this i first tried to confirm the greater than condition, i wrote the following code:
<asp:TextBox
ID="TxtSessionFrom"
runat="server"></asp:TextBox>
<asp:CompareValidator
ID="CompareValidator1"
runat="server"
ControlToValidate="TxtSessionFrom"
ErrorMessage="CompareValidator"
Operator="GreaterThanEqual"
Type="Date"></asp:CompareValidator>
CompareValidator1.ValueToCompare=(DateTime.Now.AddYears(1).ToString());
but this gave an error: The value '' of the ValueToCompare property of 'CompareValidator1' cannot be converted to type 'Date'.

Here's an odd one that I've never seen before. Only on IIS, not in Cassini but in all web browsers I have a button that posts back and the page_load event fires, but the actual button click event doesn't fire. there is no re-writing of the page or anything else happening.

My client gave me this web solution, in it various projects, and the problematic project (for me) is the Web Site.
I've copied the code to test web server (2008) and installed VS 2008 so I could step through the code on the server due to some weirdness.
Anyhow, when I open the solution locally on my personal computer, it runs on Cassini [URL] because I'm not on a server OS. However, when I run the app on the web server, when I hit F5, it runs oh [URL].
When I'm running the code on the server, how do I point the web site to use Cassini?

In our ASP.NET application we perform some initializations upon the Application Start event.When the application is started in visual Studio 2010 with 'Debug->Start new instance' the ASP.NET Development server does not start new, and my Application's Start event is not fired.My workaround is to manually stop the development server - is there a setting to force this automatically?

I already set up the DNS's to do so, but incase the server cannot be contacted I would like the webserver to take over or something?

Are there any free build servers for .NET applications? We are starting project as remotely working team and right now we are searching for such solution. As far as it's an academic project we do not have funds to buy server and run CC.net on it.. Are there any charge free solutions? Or at least cheap ones.I'm asking rather about the service on the internet, not software solution

without using a database i wanted a file to point to the newest revision of a file. Someone suggested using a shortcut. Knowing i can rewrite file.ext to file.ext.lnk i thought it was a great idea. Then i tried it, my server (VS 2010rc) serves the shortcut rather then the file. Not what i wanted...How do i serve the file the shortcut is pointing to? NOTE: I am planing to use windows 2008 as my server so a solution should work on that as well. The OS i am running is windows 7.

My goal is to generate emails inside of my Asp/VB.net program. After following instructions very carefully using http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/072606-1.aspx some stackoverflow users helped me modify my class object on the asp.net page. We also revised my host/port settings in the web.config file. I still throw an exception when I try to send email which says 'Unable to connect to remote server.' After talking to the godaddy.com tech support they said I need to use the incomming server pop.secureserver.net and the outgoing server smtpout.secureserver.net. He had no further clarification. My question is, how do I set up the incomming and outgoing servers?

I see a ton of questions about uploading multiple files, but none about uploading a single file to multiple servers, so here goes... I have an ASP.NET app that will be running on two load balanced servers, and I would like to allow users to upload files and have them end up on both servers. What is the cleanest way to do this? I am using IIS 6 btw. Some ideas that come to mind are:
1) Use a virtual directory that points to some shared location that both servers can access. Will there be any access issues if the application runs at Network Service? I'm assuming the application will need to run as a user account that exists on the shared location machine. How should the permissions be set for this?
2) It would be nice if I could via jQuery post the request to both of my servers, referencing them by their port numbers. Even though the servers are on the same domain, this violates the same origin policy, right? Is there another solution I'm overlooking? How do other sites do this?

I am developing a web application and need to continue development while travelling. I have SQL Server express installed on my desktop and my laptop but (obviously) the server names differ on each machine. eg "MydesktopSQLSERVEREXPRESS" and "MyLaptopSQLSERVEREXPRESS".
Anyone know of a way I can use a generic connection string or something so I can simply transfer the solution file from my desktop to my laptop and continue development on the road?

I have a web application that will be distributed over 2 servers and the Database will be on a server other than the 2 servers. so application on each server will access database exists in another server.I am using caching in the application and when data changed the cache is cleared and the problem now how each server will feel with cache changes on the other server?
I have tried SQLCache dependency before and i have heard about Memcached, Velocity and Enterprise cache so which one will be more efficient and optimal for this case? and i have another solution to create webservice method on each application and when the cache is cleared in one application it will request the webservice method on the other application to clear cache there.
Which technique is more efficient and optimal in performance and security? and is SQLCache dependency related to SQL database only or can be applicable to other databases like Oracle?
Note: I am using load balancer to distribute requests coming for the application among the 2 server

i have searched quite a bit on this one and can't seem to find exactly what I am looking for.
I think my first problem is this: How would I bring back a DataTable FOR copying? I know I would need:
Dim dt as Datatable
But then how do I get the Original Datatable in there? I think that once I have that part, I can just make a connection to my new DB inside a copy subroutine (using the .Copy method) and be done with it. That part I have the code pretty much done for, I think.
