Application Works On Cassini But Not In IIS On Xp?
Sep 8, 2010
App works fine in IIS on Windows 7 on my dev machine. Trying to debug on a client machine running XP and VS2008 and the app works ok running on Cassini, however when I select IIS I am getting a 403 forbidden error. Anonymous access is switched on in ISS. Can anyone help work out why it won't work in IIS?

In our ASP.NET application we perform some initializations upon the Application Start event.When the application is started in visual Studio 2010 with 'Debug->Start new instance' the ASP.NET Development server does not start new, and my Application's Start event is not fired.My workaround is to manually stop the development server - is there a setting to force this automatically?

I created a web application (VS 2008 + SP1) and deployed it on my shared hosting with ASP.NET 2.0 support. I started getting errors
could not load type <page class name>
I tried resolving it but it did not work. The hosting provider told me that they have full support of .NET 2.0 framework. I tried a few inline code samples and they worked fine. Then I again deployed a small compiled website project and it also worked fine.
I dont understand. why is that when i deploy a web application project it fails and if i convert the same thing into website project it works.

I know there have been countless posts on these types of problems, and I have read through alot of them as well as doing Google searches, but I have not found anything that applies to my specific situation. If anyone has posted a similar question link me to the post with any appropriate derisive comments . Mods if this is the wrong forum feel free to move the post to the appropriate location.
I am a newbie C# developer. I have been getting my feet wet writing a C# web app for my department. I am using the following system:
Windows 7 Professional Visual Web Developer 2010 Version 10.0.30319.1 .Net framework 4.0.30319. IIS version 7.5.7600.16385 Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385CO SQL Server 2008 R2
When I run my application in the VWD debugger everything works fine and looks the way I want it to work. When I deploy to IIS (which is on the same box that I develop on) I start having some issues. Here is a breakdown of the problems I am having:
I have an asp:menu control with orientation set to horizontal. When I initially load the sitre after a deploy the menu displays correctly. But when I go to a different web page in the app the menu switches to vertical and the width of each menu item spans the width of the div that surrounds it. On the same page that causes issues with the asp:menu I also have asp:ComboBox controls that are used to filter information on the page. The combo boxes just look like text boxes. The data that should populate the boxes is not present.
I also have some ajax accordion controls contained in asp:updatepanels, neither of which work. The accordion controls are all expanded, and I cannot collapse them. If I trigger an update the entire page reloads instead of just the specific control.
I do not receive any errors when I browse to the page that causes the problems. It loads just fine everything is just jacked up. Like I said, everything works flawlessly in the VWD debugger. I know the VWD debugger does not use IIS, which makes me think this is an IIS issue, but I do not even know where to start to pinpoint the problem.

So, I've been working on an app that extracts a picture from an ole field in an old access xp db, converts it to a jpg picture, and saves it to a folder to be presented to the user.
After tweaking some permissions on the local iis, the application works fine.
In the remote one however, the application doesn't extract the picture as expected.
I'm using two dlls on there, although I don't know why it wouldn't work.

Let's say that I have my ASP.NET web application in a directory called "MyApp" both locally and on a remote server. I'm trying to build an onclick response to a link. The response calls a Javascript function, passing it the URL of an .aspx page in my web app. The Javascript pops out a new window displaying the page. My C# code looks like this:
link = new HyperLink();
link.Text = product_num_str;
link.NavigateUrl = "#";[code]....
I started using the Request's Authority property because I was having problems running locally on the Visual Studio web server when I used the Host property. The problem was that Host only returned "localhost" instead of the host and port number. When tested locally, the code works because the "authority" maps to my app root folder. The URL generated is, e.g.,
http://localhost:52071/ProductInfo.aspx?_num=123
If I run on a remote server, however, I end up with something like: http://company-server/ProductInfo.aspx?_num=123
This fails to find the page, because in this case the "MyApp" root folder must be included.There is probably an easier way - putting an entry in the web.config or something. My motivation originally was to allow the app to be published to a folder of any name and work as is. I could hack my approach and search the string for "localhost" or something, but that's ugly. So how do I build a string that will work everywhere?

I have an ASP.NET website which is running currently on IIS. Now I want to move that site to run on Cassini.
What are the advantages of Cassini over IIS? What are its disadvantages?
What are your experiences using Cassini as a production web-server?

I'm developing a web site in a high-security environment. For example, we use CAC cards to authenticate users over SSL. The site is a mix of VB.NET and C# on .NET 3.5 with some AJAX. The AJAX parts are now calling web services for things like Cascading Drop Down Lists. We've been running VS2008 configured on our local PCs to use IIS instead of the default server (Cassini). However, some security policies were rolled out to the desktops over the weekend and, suddenly, we're not allowed to run IIS on our PCs anymore. I already have some of our IT people trying to appeal for waivers for developers. In the meantime, I need to find a way to keep developing. If I turn off the SSL requirement to the 'secure' part of the application (locally, my PC only) I can serve up some of the pages (using Cassini) when I hit "F5", but pages with web services just bring up "server application unavailable". I need to be able to add some more functions into the existing web services, among other things, so the ability to single-step through the code is still a necessity. I'm sure someone who is limited to using Cassini has found a way to Build/Debug pages in VS2008 when webservices are involved. As it turns out, some links had "HTTPS://" hard-coded in them (I inherited these). Changing the link to "~folderpage.aspx" allowed Cassini to properly serve things up.

I'm experiencing some really odd timeout issues when running a ASP.NET 2.0 project on Cassini on localhost, and I don't have enough data to get a clue of what's going on.
Is there a way to monitor localhost traffic to Cassini, either using some specific development tool or a general-purpose monitoring app such as fiddler?
Just to pre-empt some answers I'm already aware of:
Normally I can use the well-known dot-hack for using fiddler to monitor localhost traffic, but with Cassini I get the following error message in the browser:
[Fiddler] Connection to localhost. failed. Exception Text: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it ::1:3213
Fiddler also listens to localhost on http://ipv4.fiddler:port, and I can intercept the traffic. But when I do this the timeout issues don't occur!
Edit: Oops. This question had already been asked... Twice.. Didn't come up on search or . The solution found in the second thread is to use the dot-hack with ip-address (http://127.0.0.1.:port/ instead of "localhost". This question may be closed.

I have a TypeConverter (I followed this example to a 'T' ). It works perfectly within a console application but I get the dreaded "Unable to generate code for a value of type 'className'. This error occurred while trying to generate the property value for...".This appears in the Event Viewer as a "HttpParseException" with a description of "A parser error has occurred."
This occurs ONLY if I attempt to set the Property implementing the TypeConverter Attribute from within the ASPX, if I don't set the Property the page loads fine. Trouble is, becuase it is a Parse Error I am having a heck of a time debugging.
Again, this works fine within a console app, but only fials when used within an aspx app.

I've just run into one of the problems of using the integrated dev server (Cassini) in VS and would like to see if there are any solutions.We're using asp.net authentication to secure the site. However, Cassini runs in integrated pipeline mode, meaning that requests for all files go through the asp.net isapi. The result of this is that it's securing files that would otherwise not be secured in a production environment (.htm .js .css etc..).
Now I understand that we can run the project on a local IIS instance, but we would like to avoid this if possible. But, because of the problem above, this is looking like the only solution.Does anybody have any ideas about how to get Cassini working with authentication that can be easily moved to a production environment when ready. (I'd also like to avoid having a different development web.config that specifically allows access to these files).

anybody comment on the differences between IIS & Cassini in terms of performance and memory consumption?am using VS 2010 on a Windows XP SP2 developing a silverlight app.My machine has a 3 GB DDR2 RAM but still debugging is a pain and cassini keeps on crashing and I need to restart my machine 3-4times a day which is a considerable loss of productivity.

I am trying to run a WCF Data Service using the ASP.Net Dev server (aka Cassini). When I hit F5 I get the following message in my browser:

The server encountered an error processing the request. See server logs for more details. However, I don't know where Cassini puts its server logs. Does anyone out there know?

I'm debugging an ASP.NET MVC 2 application running on .NET 4.0 (Windows 7), currently inside of Cassini, the Visual Studio Debugging Web Server.All was running well, when I suddenly was having exceptions in my Application.EndRequest handler. After investigating into this issue, I found the reason was that Cassini was calling EndRequest on a different thread than BeginRequest (then, a ThreadStatic variable which was set in BeginRequest and used in the EndRequest handler was null, since on this thread, BeginRequest was never called).What could be the reason for Cassini to execute BeginRequest and EndRequest on different threads?I know the reason could be an 'Async' Page directive (see Do ASP.NET Requests always BeginRequest and EndRequest on the same thread? , but I have no 'Async' attribute in my Page directives).

Here's an odd one that I've never seen before. Only on IIS, not in Cassini but in all web browsers I have a button that posts back and the page_load event fires, but the actual button click event doesn't fire. there is no re-writing of the page or anything else happening.

My client gave me this web solution, in it various projects, and the problematic project (for me) is the Web Site.
I've copied the code to test web server (2008) and installed VS 2008 so I could step through the code on the server due to some weirdness.
Anyhow, when I open the solution locally on my personal computer, it runs on Cassini [URL] because I'm not on a server OS. However, when I run the app on the web server, when I hit F5, it runs oh [URL].
When I'm running the code on the server, how do I point the web site to use Cassini?

I've built this app that displays employee photos stored in several sharepoint folders. It also displays the employee name extracted from the file name and a previous and next button to move through the photos.
The markup is surrounded by an update panel to prevent the entire page from reloading when you click to view the next photo.
The app is working fine in firefox, but the images do not display in IE8. Can anyone tell what is causing this?
public List<string> photoFileList = new List<string>();
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
