I'm using VS 2008, C# 3.5 to develop my own login system for our company website.
Originally we have a "simple" design which only had a login and order page.
That order page needs to be opened for 10-12 hours at the time while our stores are opened without having to relog into the system for each query.
We also have a requirement that some users need to access 2 different compagnies (separate inventories) which require 2 different logins.
I solved that "cross over" session problem by moving all the values into viewstate with my own viewstate manager class right after the login.
Now my problem is that we are adding more and more pages and I don't want to be stuck with the problem to resave the viewstate to session and then back on viewstate for every menu items and buttons.
Is there a way to create some sort of items list of all the sessions opened by the user and only transmit that from pages to pages?
I am trying to create a system in which there will be a single user accessing his acount from two endpoints simultanously.
I think this is possible.
1) How to restrict the user to have only one session at a time?
2) How to change it to have limited number of sessions per user at a time?
My prior asp.net apps used windows authentication on an intranet. Now I'm developing an app for the internet and am stumbling over how to properly manage user sessions and state.
I first developed my web site functionality; created the SQL DB and got all of the pages to properly handle the data. Then, I installed the SQL Membership database and was able to get the CreateUser, Login, Logout pages to work. On the Verify process for the Userid, I added a step that will take the membership UserId value and create a Company record in my tables and link my CompanyId key with the UserId.
At Login time, I create a CompanyId session variable; each page uses it to retrieve records for the user. When Session Timeout occurs and the user click a link to another page, the app redirects properly to a Login page. However, if the time expires and then the user interacts on that same page, 'Object not set to an instance of the object' - the CompanyId session variable has expired.
What is the proper way to handle this? I'd like the page to automatically redirect to a TimedOut page (this would happen automatically without the user doing anything).
I considered writing a Function where I pass the Session variable I want and the Function sees if it exists; if it doesn't it would do a Response.Redirect to the TimedOut page...I can't get the Redirect to work in a Class Function ('reference to a non-shared member...').
I assumed that I should set CompanyId as a Session Variable so each page knows the user to get data for. Another approach is to use the membership User and if it is still valid, do a DB lookup to get the CompanyId. I did not choose this because I felt that it would increase DB traffic and web traffic.
Here are several relevant settings from my web.config:
<sessionState cookieless="UseDeviceProfile" />
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="~/UserTasks/Login.aspx" />
It feels like there should be a straightforward answer to this but I am missing it.
This is probably an easy one, but can I use SQL Server Management Studio Express to work on a regular SQL Server database?

View 3 RepliesWe have a cient we are stting up that has 2 separate physical servers, one that is the web server the other the database server. Using impersonation we have been able to get the website to connect and retrieve data from the sql server so that part is not an issue. The problem is I have a windows service application that must be installed on the web server (as it process files downloaded to an ftp site) and it must be able to connect and write to the sql server as well.We tried adding a system.web block with the impersonation stuff to the app.config file which of course did not work. Can anyone tell me what/how we need to configure this properly?
View 7 RepliesI have inherited an ASP.NET 3.5 application that relies heavily on sessions and storing DataTables within them (I know - bad, bad, bad). The application pool on the remote shared hosting service indicated that memory is at full capacity and as a result customers are losing their shopping carts because of dropped sessions.
Ultimately the goal is to rewrite this code, but for the time being I would like to stabilize the site the best I can. The host has recommended I use SQL Server Session State instead of in-proc. I have no experience with this, so I'm hoping it's as simple as running the .sql against the database to configure SQL Server and updating the web.config.
In Visual Studio 2010 there is a handy tool for managing users for my Silverlight Business Application. How do I do this with my deployed application?
View 1 RepliesWe are working on a web application that is distributed across 3 load-balanced web servers. A lot of the data we retreive via NHibernate is stored in System.Web.Caching.Cache.
System.Web.Caching.Cache does a lot to increase the responsiveness of an application, but there are a few issues that we don't exactly know how to resolve, such as
when a user requests data on server1 that data is cached on server1, but for their next request, the load balancer might direct them to server2. That data they requested on server1 is no longer available, and server2 will have to request it from the database again. If the user does something on server1 to invalidate the cached data, the cache is flushed on server1. However the original cache is still available on server2 & server3, so when the user submits a subsequent request and they're directed to either of the other servers, they are going to be presented with invalid data.We have applications that update data (such as performance data) on a regular basis. When the performance data is updated we want to flush this from the cache so when a user requests the data again, they're presented with the latest data. How can we get these applications to flush the cache on 3 web servers?
What are the best ways to resolve these issues?
Should we have cache stored on a separate server such as we could to for HttpContext.Session with a SessionState server?
Is there a way for us to set a Cache Dependency on the Cache in the other 2 servers?
Is it possible for us to implement a Cache Dependency on the actual database tables or rows? When these change the cache is flushed? -- or could we set up a database trigger to flush the cache somehow?
I'm somewhat new to aps.net and am not sure how to come up with a technique for acheiving the following results.I think a GridView might do the trick, but am unsure how to manage the sorting/grouping aspect. Here's what I need to do:
[code]...
I have started using an SQLState server to store my objSessionData object and many more session data.
<sessionState mode="SQLServer" sqlConnectionString="Server=**********;UID=*****; PWD=***" cookieless="false" stateNetworkTimeout="20" timeout="60" />
I open two browser, log into the application, proceed in a few pages to store some information in the objSessionData for both browser (2 differrent session).If I close the first broswer, and now keep on going on the 2nd broswer, everything that was in session is now lost.It looks like Session 1 detroyed session 1 and session 2.I have tried to change the cookieless to TRUE and when it is set to TRUE, I do not get this problem at all.
I have a default web site with few websites in it. I will get https://testQA.xy.com/XYZ/index.aspx if i browse this website.
Now i want to configure another website for staging like [URL]
I have developed my first MVC application, which runs perfectly on my local development box.
However after publish to a server running IIS 7 I cannot get the application to work?
1. I created the application in IIS 7
2. Changed authentication to use Forms Authentication instead of Anonymous.
But this exception is generated - shown in browser:
[code]...
I am trying to implement an IHttpHandler. I have defined an appropriate class but the debug web server (you know, the one you get if you hit f5 in Visual Studio) is responding with "Can't Display Page".I looked here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms228090%28v=VS.90%29.aspx to learn how to configure the handler, and it seems there are different ways for IIS6 and 7. But the process is put something in the web.config and then set it up in IIS Manager. However, that is a deployment issue. I want to be able to run it in the test server, and I don't know how to do this second step in the test server.I put the following in my web.config:
<httpHandlers>
<add verb="*" path="*.sample"
type="MyNamespace.Code.HelloWorldHandler"/>
</httpHandlers>
HelloWorldHandler is the code from the link above (wrapped in MyNamespace.)
Can someone let me know how to configure this correctly for the development server?
I am using localhost for running my current web application on Visual Studio 2010 but want to configure IIS server 6.0 for implement website.
View 1 RepliesI am developing a MVC 2 application that uses aspnetdb on my SQL Server 2008 detabase for forms authentication. On my development machine I can configure the users, roles and permissions using my Website Administration Tool (WAT). My question is how do I deploy this database to a production server and how do I configure it with users, roles and permissions?
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to add functionality to a simple web service that will allow me to log information to an XML file on the hard drive where the application is located. When I employ the functionality in a Console version of the application, the data gets logged to:binx86Debug MySolution.MyProjectMessageLogTestMessagess.xml. However, when I try to write read from or write to the XML file in the ASP.NET application, I get a System.UnauthorizedAccessException with the message: Accees to the path 'MessageLog' is denied.I would like the log file to appear in the in folder of the application directory, so what settings in IIS or on the server itself would I need to change to allow my application to read from and write to that folder?
View 3 RepliesI thought I had everything in place to start workign with asp.net web services, but after trying to run my first test, and then attempting to load even a basic .aspx test page it seems my server is not correctly configured for asp.net. I haven't been able to track down where my problem is though.
View 4 Repliesis there a way to configure the server / something else to send me an email every time asp.net crashes (with the error - just like the "yellow" screen it shows)

I got some about IIS configuration in local system by using this command
%Windir%Microsoft.NETFrameworkv1.1.4322aspnet_regiis.exe -i
But how to configure for remote server?
I'm using one XP with SP 2 as my local Laptop PC . Its IIS has one default web site, of course, which is the site I'm working on. When some feature is finished I deploy it to my "production" site which is hosted somewhere else. Very common situation, I guess. This app uses email to notify customers of some particular events. Works on production, but sometimes I need to change something in the way those notifications work. Currently I have to upload the changes to "production" to check it out. Is there any way for me to set up smtp server on my local machine so I could work locally with those features?

View 4 RepliesI can't believe I'm having so much trouble finding this information. I'm endeavouring to learn about creating model classes with Linq to SQL. By default VS2010 wants to use SQL Express, but our organisation has several database servers for development so I'd rather use one of those. PLEASE can somebody tell me how I can configure VS2010 to do that, as all I get is 'A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server ... Verify that the instance name is correct'. Yeah, thanks Microsoft. Actually telling me how to verify the instance name would be a really good move here.
