I want my cookie to disappear when the user closes their brower-- I've already set some promising looking properties, but my cookies pop back to live even after closing the entire browser.
HttpCookie cookie = new HttpCookie("mycookie", "abc");
cookie.HttpOnly = true; //Seems to only affect script access
cookie.Secure = true; //Seems to affect only https transport
What property or method call am I missing to achieve an in memory cookie?

When a user logs in into my website I have a custom membership provider that overrides ValidateUser and verifies that the user has sufficient rights etc.
However, when implementing a 'remember me' function through the default forms authentication using RememberMeSet, I also want to validate a user on the first request.
Is there some hook I can attach to that triggers when a user logs in with their persistent cookie?

i have a custom membership provider and do manual validation of the user when they log in and set a persistent cookie with this bit of code:
FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage(this.txtEmail.Text,
this.cbRememberMe.Checked);
The cookie gets set fine. I can tell it has all the data it needs by looking at it in Fiddler once im validated. However coming back to the site im always getting prompted to log in again. I am starting to think the problem isn't how im saving the cookie but that maybe my custom membership isn't acutally looking for this auth cookie again. Or im naming it wrong or something.
Two things
1) My membership provider is custom and NOT added to web.config - it's a .cs file that connects to a CMS back end for the validation and it works fine logging people in and such it just never keeps (or uses) the persistent cookie.
NOTE: the persistence doesn't work anywhere (on my local machine / staging server or live server - Application name is simply "/")
NOTE 2: as an aside we have a google search applicance. Which we baked a 10 year cookie for on this site - we opened up the cookie and used the encrypted string in the google search appliance (this is how you get it to get past logins, etc) and this thing works great- it logs itself in no problem all the time. SO i am a bit lost as to why a user with an almost identical cookie is not getting logged in.

I need to connect to a WebService provided by someone else. This WS (all https) has three methods that are accessible without having logged on:
login, logoff, getVersion . All other methods require that the login-method has been called before. Nothing special unto this point. However, the docs state that I have to make sure that (quote):
"All method calls between login and logoff are to be carried out by means of the same persistent http-connection (key word: http persistent connections or http connection reuse"
I seem to be unable to figure out how that would work - all WS'es I ever utilized were either taking user/pwd combinations in each method call or the login-method returned something like a SessionID which was then used for each subsequent call to a given method (i.e. passed as a parameter). If I call the login-method and subsequently call any method that requires authentication, the call will fail with an exception telling me that I need to log in first.

Now How to make it persistent?
Because if I visit the same page again after closing the browser, I'm unable to get it back.

is it possible to preserve authentication for ASP.NET Forms authentication cookie,btween Http and Https (different domains) and back?I mean haveing single signon for two domains say http://www.mydomain.com and https://members.mydomain.comI've seen on quite asp.net sites that have a 'MyAccount' section they transfer the site to https and then when you have logged into your account successfully and gone back to the majority of the site you move back to http whilst still being logged in.

We have a wfc layer that wraps the business classes and database access and use a client that lives on the database layer. Amongst our group we are attempting to form standards. Some want to have the client call the web method and pass the page they are requesting and the page size. Pass that to the database and then page in SQL Server use RowNum.Some want to cache the full list of objects in http cache on the service tier and page in memory. They concern here is memory use on the server.
Which would be best for a medium number of users with potentially large number of records to manage (say 30K) Is it better to cache them all in memory and work from there or page at the database as the application scales?

I intend to use SSL on the login form so that the username and password is encrypted during user login. But, after the user has been authenticated, if I return to HTTP, the Autentication Cookie will be passed from client to server on each request. How safe is this? Obviously i'll use SSL on pages where the user is entering sensitive information, but for most of the time, for performance reasons, i'll just want them to remain authenticated and use HTTP.
I note that if I set RequiresSSL="True" in my forms authentication section in web.config then the authentication cookie is not passed if I use HTTP so I cannot identify the current user. "Is it bad practice to set RequiresSSL="false" and allow the Authentication cookie to pass over HTTP"?

Is it available to have one page as a login page and create that three application's cookie from here and then redirect user to demanded application?

I know that you can't edit incoming cookies. I have a cookie that I just need to read..nothing more but I have a need to remove some characters from its value so that I can parse it. How can I do this? I don't need to send the modified new cookie back in the response, it's just for my server-side consumption and then that's it.

Do we know the algorithm that asp.net uses to create the authentication cookie (when using forms authentication?)
Can we basically create our own copy implementation? if so, how?
What does it use to generate the encrypted cookie value, I know it uses whatever you pass into the SetAuthCookie call (which is usually the userID/username).

Very new to ASP.NET and C# (somewhat knowledgable in PHP) I have an ASP.NET web application and need to manage access to pages based on a 'status' stored in a cookie. I would like to use the following code to create the cookie in a login method.
HttpCookie cookie = new HttpCookie("UserCookie");
cookie.Value = "status"; <-- this will be replaced with a variable once its working
cookie.Expires = DateTime.Now.AddHours(1);
Response.SetCookie(cookie);
My problem is that the only place I can put this code where it works is in the global.asax Session_Start method. It simply doesn't work anywhere else. I am checking the cookie creation in firefox options and see the ASP.NET_SessionId created but nothing else (This is all running on localhost).
Is the session status somehow interfering with the cookie creation? Do I need to configure something in Web.config? It would appear that the only time I can create a cookie is on Session_Start. Does anyone have any tips, perhaps I am missing something simple?

I am building an asp.net application, using II6 on windows server 2003 (vps hosting).
I am confronted with an error I didn't receive on my development machine (windows 7, iis 7.5, 64 bit).
When my wcf service tries launching my query running against a local sql server this is the error I receive:
Memory gates checking failed because the free memory (43732992 bytes) is less than 5% of total memory. As a result, the service will not be available for incoming requests. To resolve this, either reduce the load on the machine or adjust the value of minFreeMemoryPercentageToActivateService on the serviceHostingEnvironment config element.

I have both VS 2005 and 2008 installed on my machine. 2005 is fine. For 2008, literally any asp.net project I try to create gets this eror. I try stepping into the code, and the error occurs apparently before anything that I can trap is loaded. There is no information written to the event log. I have tried this with a "Hello World" webpage with nothing else going on. Seems unique to my Windows Server 2003 machine.

I am maintaining C# .NET code written by somebody else, I get following exception few times,Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corruptThe code structure where I get the above exception is somethign like this,- it is using ref variables in following sequence,Variable-1 and variable-2 are local variables in App1, - App1: func1() which passes these variables reference to func2(), - App1: func2() passes same variables reference via .net remoting to another application (App2).-App2: does the same passes same received reference to another call 2 times.- The execption is occured while returning from App2.

My doubts are ,1. Is passing reference variables in such chain is correct? will it cause such exeption? Does .net support ref variable call directly?

I am busy building a shopping cart with cookies. I have datalist which I populate from the cookies with a delete button next to each cookie

Now the problem is that when I hit the delete / remove button to expire the cookie, what happens when repopulating the datalist is that it shows the original cookie with all it's values as well as a new entry where all the values are blank.

I want to change the value in a cookie:
HttpCookie hc = new HttpCookie("HiddenColumns");
hc.Value = customView.HiddenFields;
hc.Expires = DateTime.Now.AddDays(365);
Response.SetCookie(hc);
Or this way:
Response.Cookies["HiddenColumns"].Value = customView.HiddenFields;;
Response.Cookies["HiddenColumns"].Expires = DateTime.Now.AddDays(365);
But when I retrieve the cookie value, it is still old, unless I do postback. I don't want to use Redirect.

I have a memory leak somewhere that I cant find. Every few days my server will crash, and just before that I log a ton of SQL errors stating that it is "out of memory".
I cant find it anywhere, all of my connections are being disposed like so:

Then I call the connection from my pages like so:[Code]....
That is all pretty straight forward. The connection is disposed because it is implementing the USING clause. I am opening the connection in my connection manager class, and not where it is being utilized?Or, could the problem be in the below method I am using to populate a SqlDataReader:[Code]....
Now, at first it appears as though this could be the problem because the Connection isn't part of a USING clause, however doesn't the 'Data.CommandBehavior.CloseConnection' pretty much do the same thing. This makes sure that the connection is closed when the reader is closed, right? Here is how I call that above reader from my login page code behind:[Code]....
So the DataReader will get closed even without the .Close() because it is in the USING, and the connection should get closed because I specified it in the ExecuteReader paramters right?

I have a memory issue on my websites and am trying to get to the bottom of it. I have downloaded the 14 day trial of ANTS Memory Profiler and have been playing with it to get a grip of what it's telling me. In the memory options on the timeline, I can see Bytes in All Heaps and Private Bytes etc but I am not sure which ones I should be focusing on to see where the memory spikes and doesn't go back down.I am profiling a ASP.NET website using ASP.NET 2.0.
