How To Maintain The Same Session Id Across Multiple Web Applications
Jul 9, 2010
I have two identical applications setup on IIS on different virtual directories (I have done some workaround to ensure that they both have the same application name). Is there a way to share session id across two asp.net web applications?
Since I'm storing the session in StateServer, they should both be getting the same session data, however, a different session id is created everytime I go from application a to applicatino b. Wouldn't this happen in a load balancing scenario as well? Where when I go to www.test.com, it would redirect that request to server a, and then if I hit it again, it would go to server b, but since it's a different web application, it would create a new session id?

We're using ASP.NET and IIS 6.0. I realise that the definitions of applications, websites and virtual directories are ill-defined in IIS 6, and changed a lot in IIS 7. However, I'm stuck with IIS 6.0 for now.
We have a single web site defined in IIS, and a number of separate sub-sites in Virtual Directories.
The scheme looks like this:-
[URL]
[URL]
site1, site2, ... are virtual directories in IIS 6.0, under the "Default Web Site".
I need to use ASP.NET sessions and forms authentication in most of these sites, and I don't want them to share authentication data or session information at all.
Both the mechanisms currently depend on cookies. However, the cookies created by default use the same name, and have a path of "/" in the browser, meaning the sites' cookies will clash with each other.
Without changing the default name for each cookie, how can I enforce separation between my sub-sites? Do I need to change the virtual directories for IIS 6 "Applications"? Or is there some way in code to enforce a more limited scope for the cookies?

We are developing products that will be used in the following way:
Various shared libraries which may be used by multiple products. I anticipate these libraries will mostly need to access string resources that contain error messages/exceptions. Various end-user based applications, designed to run as standalone apps on a PC. They will be required to support multiple languages upon deployment/installation.
Various web-sites which may be required to support multiple languages either at deployment time or possibly at runtime (i.e. minimal or zero downtime). Potentially the site might need to support multiple languages at the same time if being accessed globally.
We may be required to allow customers access to our language files for editing themselves. We would not wish to allow them access to our source code (other than the resource files/dlls) in order to achieve this. We might need to incorporate a facility to log exceptions in our native language (English in this case) and display them in the translated language. This will us debug our customers solutions in the field.
I am already aware of products like RCWinTrans and handling multiple languages in VC++/MFC applications. However, the requirements we are faced with here are more extensive and thus require us to make a few up front decisions that could be difficult to change long term, so ideally we want to make the best choice now. Based on my own knowledge, I have a few questions although I may be missing some tricks with .net that will be happily received. Here are my questions:
What would be best? Put all our resources in a seperate DLL per VS solution OR put the resources in each VS project. The way I see it per solution is easier to manage, modify, and allow customer access. The per project solution seems cleaner though and makes the individual projects more portable. This method would apply to our shared library based solutions as well as our end-application based solutions.
Is it possible to have two seperate resource files loaded at once i.e. if we want to log the exceptions in English but supply them back up the food chain (as a message in an exception) in the translated language? Are there any tricks we can use to automate this like AOP?

how can i do this? At the moment a user's session is lost whenever they close the browser, but sites like facebook have a 'keep me logged in' option. How does this work exactly and are there any well known ways to do this in .net? i understand part of the way it works is that they store the username in a cookie.

I'd like to maintain a session state per browser tab.
Is this easy (or even possible) to do in ASP.NET?
Example: A user hits Ctrl-T in firefox 5 times and visits the site in each tab. I'd like each tab to have its own session state on the server

In my website, when user logged in, I maintain his/her username in a session but when user opens another tab and use the same website at that time session doesn't work.
For Example: User logged in with his/her details in my website and than when he open another tab of same browser and browse same website at that time it doesn't maintain session for that user.

We have an external site which the users in our company connect to by giving their corresponding username and password. The external site is an ASP.NET website. We want to integrate this website into our intranet portal so that the users don't have to enter their UN/Pwd to login to the website. Since the target website has no provision for SSO, we are simulating the POST request to login.We are now required to perform an action after the initial login is done, on an another page. We can simulate the corresponding POST request as well

What is the standard way to maintain a stable user session in ASP.NET without worrying about IIS recycles, disconnected users, re-opening browsers and so on. I would like for our users to not have to login except once per month, whatever happens!
Also does it matter if I am using my own login control (not the standard asp.net login control)? If I understand correctly, I think I would need to create an authentication ticket manually.

I have a requirement where i need to download mutiple files as a single zip file.There is linkbutton named HOME as well in the page. when this linkbutton is clicked it should redirect to homepage.aspx. I found a ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib.dll in net and used in my website. Here is the code
[Code]....
With the above code i got the expected result i,e. i can zip the files and save on client system. But the problem is after saving/canceling the zip file if user clicks on linkbutton in the page_load event Session[getdata] became null. there is no data in Session. what might be the problem? Actually it should redirect to homepage.aspx but its going to login.aspx because Session[getdata] is null.

I am developing a web application. This application is fully customised based on the user settings. Suppose, application hosted on [URL] and user can signup on the website and it will get the domain like [URL] and for user2 will be [URL] so and so forth. so in this case how would I maintain the session for each user? each user will be representing a single website along with public interface and admin pages.
what I am thinking is to store all the setting (for each user) in the database and then when ever server received request then get the user info from the URL (first time only and after get it from the session) and get user details but I am not very much satisfied with this approach.

I am using master page.
(1) to maintain the state of the treeview without storing it in session or view state or
(2) I am binding the treeview control dynamically from a xml. Even if I use session state is ther any option to use it without using SelectedNodeChanged event because when u click the treeview node , first master page will postback for this event and then the child page and then again the master page will post pack (as the child page has inherited the master page). So here in this case we are posting the master page twice and it is reducing the performance.

I read about Session Hijacking articles and would like to some more information related to it. Currently my web application which is developed in ASP.NET , is using Cookieless =true mode for sessionstate. We are using HTTPS which is a secure connection which will reduce session hijacking. I know when we using Cookieless the session id is embedded in URL which can be dangerous sometimes if user pass this URL to somebody and other user will be able to log in if session is still alive. So just want to know is HTTPS is more than enough or i should do something to secure my web app.

I've two application ASP.NET (once is Mojo Portal). I can navigate from one to other using an URL token id.
To this way, by token, I create a new session and save the relative auth cookie.
But, sometimes, the asp web application don't keep the session and put me down. When this happen I can't login until the session cookies is not deleted.
Both the two application are behind an reverse proxy.

I'm trying to configure a websetup for the first time for our ASP.NET application which consists of 11 web services. Is it possible to create an msi that will install the app and the 11 web services and also set-up the app pools & create the apps in IIS? Or would I need an individual setup for each web service? Basically I need to make it as simple as possible for the client to release.

I have created custom a MembershipProvider, SessionIDManager, and SessionStateStore since I need to use custom legacy sessions and logins.. When the Application is ran, it runs the GetSessionID in the SessionIDManager(which is correct) The problem then is if there is no session meaning the GetSessionID method returns null, it tries to create a new session using CreateSessionID.. I want it to redirect to the login application(another application). We only create and store session information for logged in users and the "session id numbers" come from a file that is pre-populated with "session id numbers"(I didnt design this and its out of my control).. So its not feasable to give everyone who visits the site one of the "session id" numbers. I also need for users with an "invalid" session(when checked through Validate()) to be redirected to the login page.

I'm trying to make a form that could have one or multiple textboxes. I have a textbox and a button to add additional textboxes.
I have no problem adding a second textbox inside a panel but I want to be able to keep adding more textboxes every time the link button is clicked and later reference those boxes to be saved. I would also like to maintain the value of the textboxes there. They are not saved to the database until all the necesary texboxes have been added.
I added the textbox using:
private void button1_Click(Object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
TextBox textbox1 = new TextBox();
panel.controls.add(textbox1);
}
that works fine, but when i click the button again it doesn't add an additional textbox which is what i need.
