How To Setup Silverlight Xap Caching To Work The Same In All Browsers
Dec 20, 2010
I have a SL app that can be run in-browser or out-of-browser. I want the browser to:
Cache the xap file Load the xap from the cache if it has not changed or re-download it if it has changed.
More details
Setting a future expires header obviously solves the caching problem but then I cannot force the user to download the latest version. Normally I would just add a querystring to the url (eg url?v=1) but I cannot do this as this breaks the out-of-browser functionality. eg the app thinks it is not installed when in fact it is.
no cache
If I set Cache-Control to no-cache, Chrome and Firefox correctly send a request to the server for the xap but use the cache if a 304 is returned. IE8 just downloads the file again as does Safari.
must-revalidate
Setting Cache-Control to must-revalidate again works correctly in Chrome and Firefox but Safari always downloads the xap again while IE8 always uses the cache.

I am working on VS 2008 and 3.5 framework. I had three windows services. I placed all three in a single solution, created installer individually for each of them. Then created a setup project. When I build it says build failed . But I checked on the errorlist, (i enabled the diagnostics in options menu), but there was no error at all. I went ahead and installed. There were no issues, But there was no service showed up in the services.msc.
I installed each service individually , using installutil command, it showed up. But my requirement is to bundle these services and deploy to the client. The client should install it.

Platform: VS 2010, .NET 3.5, ASP.NET, Silverlight
I am working on an ASP.NET app that uses a Master Page. The master page uses the "blendTrans" attribute to prevent flicker between page loads during navigation.
Here is a code snippet:
<head id="Head1" runat="server">
<meta http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="blendTrans(Duration=0)" />
<meta http-equiv="Page-Exit" content="blendTrans(Duration=0)" />
....
</head>
In one of the content pages I create a Silverlight 3 app. Here is the code:
<asp:content>
<div id="silverlightControlHost" style="height:100%; width:100%; text-align:center;">
<object data="data:application/x-silverlight-2," type="application/x-silverlight-2" width="100%" height="100%">
<param name="source" value="ClientBin/DataMapperCtrl.xap"/>
<param name="onError" value="onSilverlightError" />
<param name="background" value="white" />
<param name="minRuntimeVersion" value="3.0.40818.0" />
<param name="autoUpgrade" value="true" />
<a href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=149156&v=3.0.40818.0" style="text-decoration:none">
<img src="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=161376" alt="Get Microsoft Silverlight" style="border-style:none"/>
</a>
</object><iframe id="_sl_historyFrame" style="visibility:hidden;height:0px;width:0px;border:0px"></iframe>
</div>
</asp:content>
The Silverlight app works fine, but since adding the Silverlight app the navigation between the main pages on the app is very slow and gray is displayed between the page loads.
Has anybody else had this problem?

If we use an aspx page with a Caching Profile, the server caches images that are loaded with the aspx page. So if ten clients load the same image through the aspx page (same url), for one client the image is gotten out of the db, for the nine others it is cached.When we use a HttpHandler, this doesn't happen. The image is always fetched from the database. We have tried all different settings without any success. (we have checked this link and have not been able to cache on server side).

I have a silverlight application project in my solution. The other project is a web application project that has a .xap file in ClientBin.
When I created the silverlight project, it asked if I wanted the asp.net application to host it (and I said yes).
In the root directory, there is a test page for the silverlight control. That loads the control.
In another directory, I insert the SAME asp markup to get the silverlight control to launch again.
Nothing happens.
Why would the silverlight launch on one page and not on the other? how to documentation about dependencies that I might not know about?
I've put a reference to Silverlight.js on the page as well.
Here's the markup:

I am trying to use output caching on my .net pages but it is not working when I use Route handlers to redirect request to actual page, but it works when I call the page directly.
also one more weird thing is that when I am debugging and using .net instance of IIS http://localhost:64293/test it is working, but when I deploy it and try to call the page it is not caching i.e. http://www.mydomain/test(but it works if I call the page directly)
I am using VS 2010, IIS 6.0, .net Framework 4
aspx page code is :
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" MasterPageFile="~/Site.master" Title="Not Found" %>
<%@ OutputCache Duration="300" VaryByParam="*" Location ="Server" %>
<script runat="server">
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
litPageTitle.Text = "<br/>Datetime: " + DateTime.UtcNow.ToString();
}
</script>
my global.asax.cs code is
public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes)

I have a Silverlight site hosted in an asp page, it has been developed using vs2010 using .net 3.5 framework and silverlight 4. It all works on my dev box. However when I publish the site and get it deployed I get the error:
Could not load file or assembly 'Moe.Tactical.Ttas.Web' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Moe.Tactical.Ttas.Web' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded.
I have checked that the ISS asp setting are using 2.0.50727, and that all my references are using that runtime also.
I am not sure what to do to work out what the missing dependencies are at this point (I don't have access to the deployment box, I will have to go and sit with a system admin).

I'm having trouble setting up a custom NEW User Screen. Here is my situation, I have a Request for Access Screen that uses the CreateNewUser Wizard Control. I want to leave the Question and Answer for this, however I also want a custom NEW User Setup which I build myself to allow the system administrators to setup users, but for this setup I don't want the administrators to have to pick the question and answer for the NEW user, so I would like to bypass this for this setup. However, my Membership.CreateUser keeps asking for it. How can I accomplish this? I've included a copy of my current web.config file. You will notice a AspNetAdminMemberhip which I use to allow the System Administrators to reset passwords.

I have a web setup package project alongside an old .asmx web service. When I build it I only get 'MyService.msi' and not the 'Setup.exe' in the 'Release' folder after build. Normally the .msi suffices for installation, but on Windows Server 2008 R2 I am getting denied from installing the .msi pacakge. I can only install .exe packages after right clicking and stating "Install as Administrator".
The server admin is still new to 2008 R2 and not sure why I can't install an .msi because I am an admin, so for now if I knew how to get that web setup package to generate the Setup.exe file as well I see my other VS.NET setup packages create.

I am trying to use domain masking to simulate multi-tenant access to my application. The plan right now is to read the subdomain portion of the domain ie: [URL] and load settings from the DB using that name.
The issue I'm having is that request.url is getting the request url - NOT the url in the browser.
So if I have [URL] forwarding to [URL] with masking, request.url is grabbing the latter, simply because of how masking works, i assume - by putting the masked site inside of a frame.
Is it even possible to read the url in the browsers address bar?

I am designing ASP.net Web pages and not sure if this would be the right way to do this.I am designing the web sites that will be accessed from either regular computers or mobile devices (phone).I was thinking to detect at very first page that whether users are coming from mobile browser or regular browser and direct to appropriate pages. So for mobile users, create/display separate UIs (rearrange controls to fit on mobile device) and for regular users, create/display separate UIs. The backend functionalities will be same, but just the UIs. Therefore, in this case I will create two separate projects in same solution, one for mobile UIs, and other one for regular UIs, but same code behinds.
