Does <httpRedirect> In Web.config Work In A Mono Setup? Or Is It IIS7 Specific?
May 11, 2010
We had some content restructure recently and I'd like to put in some redirect rules into web.config so bookmarks to the old pages can get routed to their new locations/pages.I tried using this approach:
<location path="~/product/productA.aspx">
<system.webServer>
<httpRedirect enabled="true" destination="~/product/category/productA.aspx" exactDestination="false" childOnly="true" httpResponseStatus="Permanent" />
</system.webServer>
</location>
But all I'm getting when I go to "[URL] is our http 404 page.Am I doing something wrong, or is the httpRedirect tag in web.config not supported in mono?

I'm simply adding to a set of rules on existing rewrite rules for our company website. We have a file that we need to restrict to only our internal IP addresses. The URL is http://oursite.com/internal/index.aspx?u=blahblah and need it restricted to IP ranges 10.1.X.X. I'm adding this and it's not doing anything. Even if I tried to capture all using .* for the pattern, it still ignores it. Is my syntax correct?
<rewrite>
<rules>
...
<rule name="Restrict URL" enabled="true" stopProcessing="true">

I have a restful controller that has your standard REST HTTP Verbs: Get,Post, Put, Delete. The problem I am having is that although my controllers are decorated to accept these verbs, when I execute my REST action, it can only hit my Get and Post methods. I have the attributes on top of the controller actions: HttPut, HttpDelete, HttpPost, and HttpGet. I also have the the override method in my forms: @Html.HttpMethodOverride(HttpVerbs.Put) When I submit my form, I get a 404 error from IIS 7.5, saying the static file handler couldn't find the resource. Strangely the same forms work in Cassini, so I think it is something in IIS7.5's setup.
What do I need to do to get IIS 7.5 to handle REST verbs like PUT and DELETE with Asp.Net MVC 3? I have already removed WebDAV and have looked through the handlers but the ones I am modifying seem to do nothing. My current setup is Asp.Net MVC 3, IIS7.5 on Windows 7.

Using IIS 7.5, IIS_IUSRS is supposed to be the account to use. I get '401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials' error. If I add an EVERYONE account with Read, it works. But rather not have Everyone account. Any idea why IIS_IUSRS does not work? It has Read access. Anonymous Access=enabled. Specific User=IUSR As a side, on the Basic Settings... for the site, Test Settings button says 'ok-on Authenticate' but Authorization 'cannot verify access to path'.

Currently, I work on an ASP.NET project which is hosted under version control and is used on several developer machines, tester machine and production environment.
In three cases, configuration (Web.config) may be different. For example, developer and tester environments use testing SQL Server, whereas in production environment, another SQL Server is accessed, so the connection string is different in those cases.
We want to keep three versions of Web.config in subversion. But modifying each of three files every time we need to add, remove or change a common setting is annoying: it would be nice to have a common, master Web.config, which will be inherited by each of the three Web.config files.
How to set up an ASP.NET project which will use a master configuration file and different slave configuration files on different machines, thus sharing the same project/source code/configuration files in subversion?

I am deploying a public ASP.NET website on an IIS7 web farm.
The application runs on 3 web servers and is behind a firewall.
We want to create a single page on the website that is accessible only to internal users. It is primarily used for diagnostics, trigger cache expiry, etc.
/admin/somepage.aspx
What is the best way to control access to this page? We need to:
Prevent all external (public) users from accessing the URL. Permit specific internal users to access the page, only from certain IPs or networks.
Should this access control be done at the (a) network level, (b) application level, etc.?

I have setup and SqlCacheDependency for my site and all is working well, but there is one requirement in my task that I dont' seem to be able to find the workaround for. Currently, my code relies on the following web.config settings to allow the SqlCacheDependency to know where to connect to. it is like this:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="connstring1" connectionString="......" />
</connectionStrings>
<caching>
<sqlCacheDependency enabled="true" pollTime="500">
<databases>
<add name="db1" connectionStringName="connstring1" pollTime="500" />
</databases>
</sqlCacheDependency>
</caching>
The problem is that we can't allow in our application the connectionstring to be on the web.config. I am asked to programmatically do all of that. I don't know how and I don't know if that is even possible, is it?

I am working on VS 2008 and 3.5 framework. I had three windows services. I placed all three in a single solution, created installer individually for each of them. Then created a setup project. When I build it says build failed . But I checked on the errorlist, (i enabled the diagnostics in options menu), but there was no error at all. I went ahead and installed. There were no issues, But there was no service showed up in the services.msc.
I installed each service individually , using installutil command, it showed up. But my requirement is to bundle these services and deploy to the client. The client should install it.

In the Setup Project I have 2 web.config files: web.config - used during the development and web_dist.config - the one that should be included into Setup Project. I must be sure the the Setup project will NOT include the web.config and will always include web_dist.config.
In the File System -> Web Application Folder I have added the Content Files from the project.
Also included the web_dist.config and mapped it to the web.config.
But this gives the warning:
WARNING: Two or more objects have the same target location ('[targetdir]web.config') And the actual config file included is web.config and not web_dist.config. What would be the best option to include the web_dist.config (and named as web.config in the setup)?

We have a scenario using asp.net Forms Authentication in a web farm and need to setup identical <machinekey /> sections on each servers .config file.
Is it better to store the <machinekey /> section in machine.config rather then web.config? what's the advantages and disadvantages of each approach concerning security?
<machineKey validationKey="[keyhere]"
decryptionKey="[keyhere]" validation="SHA1" />
If its not secure enough, is there any way to encrypt <machinekey /> section like we encrypt our connectionsstring (with DPAPI)? (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998280.aspx)

I have a SL app that can be run in-browser or out-of-browser. I want the browser to:
Cache the xap file Load the xap from the cache if it has not changed or re-download it if it has changed.
More details
Setting a future expires header obviously solves the caching problem but then I cannot force the user to download the latest version. Normally I would just add a querystring to the url (eg url?v=1) but I cannot do this as this breaks the out-of-browser functionality. eg the app thinks it is not installed when in fact it is.
no cache
If I set Cache-Control to no-cache, Chrome and Firefox correctly send a request to the server for the xap but use the cache if a 304 is returned. IE8 just downloads the file again as does Safari.
must-revalidate
Setting Cache-Control to must-revalidate again works correctly in Chrome and Firefox but Safari always downloads the xap again while IE8 always uses the cache.

We are working on a web application that creates more web applications.Each web application will have to get a Url Rewrite rule (URL REWRITE MODULE 2.0).As far as I know, there's no way to add such rules without modifying the web.config file (am I right??).So my plan was to work with multiple web.config partial files. One main .config file, and lots of .config files per application (every file will contain it's web application url rewrite rules).This way sounds a little bit messy, but I can't think of anything else, and suggestions will be welcomed.

I need to get the mime types in an IIS7 environment. They should be in:
<configuration>
<system.webServer>
<staticContent>
<mimeMap...
As I understand it, in IIS7 if I can get to it I should see both custom additions in my web.config as well as the mime types defined in the IIS manager at the machine level.
I don't understand how to get to this data. I have messed with the configurationmanager but I am not getting anywhere. I can get a section names system.webServer but I don't see any of the actual data as colleciton of properties or as xml.

Okay I've read the other StackOverflow postings, forum posts on MSDN, everywhere. I CANNOT get this to work for the life of me.
Here is what I have setup.
In IIS7.0
- Default Site in ASP.NET v4.0 App Pool
- C:Inetpubwwwroot as the physical path
I published my MVC2 site in VS2010 to the Default Site path, it succeeded.
Here are the settings for that:
- Same App Pool
- C:InetpubwwwrootPerfectSchedule as the physical path
- Default Document is Views/Home.mvc
I open the URL in my IE browser
- http://localhost/ --> just gives me the Apache "It works!" page
- http://localhost/PerfectSchedule --> The WebPage cannot be found
- http://perfectschedule/ --> Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

I am trying to secure an application in IIS7 using .NET Authorization Rules.
By default, the web server allows all users access (which is inherited).
I have added, just for this one application directory, a deny all users command, as well as an allow command for specific users.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<configuration>
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow users="myusername" />
<deny users="*" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</configuration>
I have Windows Authentication enabled, and I can verify that without the line that my REMOTE_USER is MYDOMAINmyusername.
However, when I try to deny all users, I am prompted with the typical Windows domain username/password box. If I enter the username password, the prompt comes back up again 3 times until finally presenting me with a failure message. (I have also tried to no avail)
Looking in the event viewer, it appears as if my login using the username and pw is successful in the audit ... and to further that point, my account is not being locked out (which it would if I were failing to login over and over). So it's as if I am logging in, but the configuration is not seeing what I entered as matching my login.
Below is the message I see (even when connecting from the server using localhost):
**Access is denied.
Description: An error occurred while accessing the resources required to serve this request. The server may not be configured for access to the requested URL.
Error message 401.2.: Unauthorized: Logon failed due to server configuration. Verify that you have permission to view this directory or page based on the credentials you supplied and the authentication methods enabled on the Web server. Contact the Web server's administrator for additional assistance.**

I have a web.config file which is quite large in my current solution running on IIS7.
It's working perfect on my dev server however I encounter the error 0x80070032 "Config Error Cannot read configuration file because it exceeds the maximum file size"
My current solution uses a very large web.config file. The architecture of my CMS application requires a large number of configuration settings.
Is there some way to extend this size limit or can I split the web.config file down into smaller files?

I currently have 2 x ASP.NET 3.5 web applications in IIS7 (lets call them WebParent and WebChild).WebChild is nested within the WebParent listing in IIS7 and is set up as an application (rather than just a virtual directory within WebParent). Both currently use their own (Classic) application pool.Both WebParent and WebChild have their own fully defined web.config files in their own root directories.
