HttpHandlers / Modules :: Global.asax 301 Redirect Fails On .HTM Files, But Works Fine Elsewhere?
Mar 4, 2011
I just bought an old domain name and am looking to redirect as many old URLs as possible to acquire backlinks intended for the original owner for pagerank reasons. The original site had a lot of static pages ending in .htm which need to be redirected to directories. I use httpcontext in my Global.asax file to initiate 301 redirects and this works great on folder names or .aspx files, but whenever I try to redirect a .htm it fails.
Sample code:
if (HttpContext.Current.Request.Url.ToString().ToLower().Contains("http://www.example.com/oldpage.htm"))
{
HttpContext.Current.Response.Status = "301 Moved Permanently";[code]....
I also tried using my Parallels H-Sphere interface provided by my hosting company to do a IIS redirect, but whenever I hit submit the page just starts an infinate loop of sending a request.

I'm trying to secure my web application so XML files it contains can't be downloaded. I thought it would be as simple as adding these to the "httpHandlers" section of web.config:
<remove verb="*" path="*.xml"/>
<add verb="*" path="*.xml" type="System.Web.HttpForbiddenHandler"/>
This failed - the XML files could still be downloaded easily. I tried different browsers in case they were caching, but everything could download the XML files without any trouble. I thought this might be due to some special handling of XML, so I tried mocking up an alternative based on ".txt123" files. I added this file with some dummy content:

I have a solution that has 2 projects in it... Project #1 is a class I created some time back to deal with the basic data connection and passing data back and forth.
The 2nd project is the new current project (web site).
Everything works fine in local mode but after I have compiled Project #1 and created a referance in Project #2 then compiled Project #2 and published to the server...
I am running on Windows 7 64bit, .NET 4.0, Access 2010, SQLExpress (loging only), C#... I have rebuilt Project #1 several times as an x86, AnyCPU, and x64... they all give the same result...
I get the following error when the web site is run.

I have a TypeConverter (I followed this example to a 'T' ). It works perfectly within a console application but I get the dreaded "Unable to generate code for a value of type 'className'. This error occurred while trying to generate the property value for...".This appears in the Event Viewer as a "HttpParseException" with a description of "A parser error has occurred."
This occurs ONLY if I attempt to set the Property implementing the TypeConverter Attribute from within the ASPX, if I don't set the Property the page loads fine. Trouble is, becuase it is a Parse Error I am having a heck of a time debugging.
Again, this works fine within a console app, but only fials when used within an aspx app.

This seems as good a place as any for this question. It has to do with an .ASHX handler.
I have written a generic file serving handler in asp.net/vb.net - it has been working great. I recently moved to a windows 7 box and am now debugging under IIS7, and this is where the problems occure.
Whenever I serve a file to either FireFox or Chrome (IE8 works fine) from IIS 7, the download will fail.
- In FireFox the error is "[some file name and path].part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read."
- In Chrome the error is "Error 330 (net::ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED): Unknown error."
- In IE8 it works fine
If I run the same code in IIS6, it works fine. If I run the same code in the Visual Studio virtual web server, it works fine (on windows 7 or XP).
I am rather concerned about this as our production web server will soon be IIS7; which I'm starting to really love, and would hate to revert to IIS6 just because this won't work in IIS7.
Here is the code I'm using..I've tried a number of different patterns. It seems to always fail on the Flush() line with the error "System.Web.HttpException = {"The remote host closed the connection. The error code is 0x80070040."}"
One thing I have noticed, if I move the flush statment to the finally clause or remove it all together; firefox will attempt to read the entire file - it appears to be looping through the entire block of code just fine, until it hits the flush statement. If I remove the flush statment I still get an error and it still tries to read the entire file before asking me to save it.
--Edit: I removed the flush and tested again; firfox thinks it downloaded a zero byte file.
I'm assuming I just have some sort of header issue going on here, but I'm at a loss at this point as to what that would be.

i have written in the "Application_BeginRequest" Method that the header of every HTTP Request will be analyzed.
It only works when i visit the myip/default.aspx site. But when i want to visit any other site there will be no entry in the database or in the listbox (the listbox is only for me to see what happens)It runs on an IIS 5.1.
I also changed in the IIS Settings the ASP.NET from 2.0 to 4.0. Do i need to configure the IIS 5.1 to use the global.asax.cs on every url?
I thought the global.asax.cs runs on every site on the webserver.

we have a store that we contracted with a company to modify. They added the following to our Global.asax file:
[code]...
The purpose is to take anyone going to one of our pages to a login screen unless they are going to these folders which do not need the login protection.
I now need to let them go to [URL]

What should be done if I want to redirect a user based on their ISO Codes?
And how should I detect a website user's IS Code in the first place? Like I know there are these server variables that we use to detect Client IP and all (HTTP_FORWARDED_FOR, REMOTE_ADDRESS, etc) but information about them on the many sites that I have read has got me confused about what to use. Like some say there can be comma separated IPs returned by HTTP_FORWARDED_X and out of those IPs , one is not sure which is the real IP and which are the proxy addresses. Also, that all the IP addresses in returned can be fake.
How to I fetch the REAL IP Address of a person? Like I only want to know what country a particular person is sitting so I can redirect the user accordingly. Secondly lets say a person is sitting in US then I want the user to be redirected to [URL] If a person is visiting my site from Germany, [URL] is the address that I want the person to be redirected to.Also if DE is the ISO Code then I want my GermanMaster.master page to load and if its US then I want that the USMaster.master should load.
So how do I fetch a user's not fake IP address, redirect a user based on that ISO code and then load a master page according to the ISO Code.
How do I go about it? I haven't ever worked with Global.asax before so clueless how to go about it all.

I have a hosted site and just added some additional error notification to my global.asax file and works like a charm. I decided to add the same logic to our test server and it doesnt work. The server.transfer never happens and the email never gets updated. Now i know the email works on the test and production server since we have other pages that use the same SMTP server name and setup as i have in the global file. Below is my code as it is in the file now. I setup a test page to cause an error and the page displays the detailed error which we dont want. But i would like to be notified if this happens. What am i missing? I can only assume that its a IIS confige issue, since the exact same code works on a hosted site, but not at work on our test or production servers. Here is the code i have in the global.asax

Is it possible to execute files from a different site in IIS than the one that's actually served? My problem is that my webhost allows for subdomains, but couples the subdomain with another folder than the default folder..
When opening domain.com i get the files from public_html on the ftp, but opening test.domain.com gets me the files from the test-folder
I need the subdomain to execute the files from public_html, but the support says that's not possible :( I was hoping some of the brilliant minds in here might have an idea.. I can of course add files and code to the subdomain-directory, but I wouldn't know what to write in like a httpmodule or something like that
I don't know which security settings that comes into play here, all I know is that the server is running IIS ASP.NET 4.0

From what I can see, .NET does not allow the use of multiple global.asax.vb within a project.This is my situation:I have a "web project" that I use as my base project for all of my other projects. This base project has a global.asax.vb file that runs cleanup code, etc. It also loads databases that I want to use within the base project. I then have these other projects that take advantage of the base project to save development time.My Problem:When project A and B load, they also needs to perform tasks within Application_Start and Session_Start specific to those projects only. I don't want to put any code for project A or B within the base project's Application_Start or Session_Start. I want to isolate the code for each project to that specific project only and keep my base project 'vanilla' and independent of any project that I build on top of it.Does anyone know how to handle this situation? I had the idea of trying to load modules contained within a folder by the base project, but that didn't seem to work out.

I need to access image files (.jpg) on a server other than the web server my app runs on. I would like to use an httphandler to do this but I am unsure of the syntax to specify the path. I have tried mapping a drive on the web server to the file server but that didn't work. I have tried using a UNC path but that did not work either.

I have an asp page that allows users to view documents, so far all document type are working great. But when I try to open an .msg file It doesnt know what program to use. I did some digging and found that this is probably because the MIMEType is not listed in my IIS. I know I need to add .msg "application/vnd.ms-outlook" But the MSDN post that I read said to open up the IIS MMC and right click on the local computer listed and go to properties. Properties does not appear as an option for me on the local computer list (I am assuming that this is because I am running IIS 5.1 on an XP machine, rather than IIS 6) I did find another post where someone said to do the following:
right click on my app
-> HTTPHeaders
-> File Types
->Insert values ".MSG" and Content Types as "application/vnd.ms-outlook"
->Apply
I was able to do this, but it did not fix the problem. how to add an MIMEType correctly in IIS 5.1?

I have custom errors set in the web config file as follows:
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="GenericError.aspx" />
Fine and dandy... I like that mode="RemoteOnly" facilitates development...
For unhandled exceptions, I have in global.asax:
Sub Application_Error(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Response.Redirect("GenericError.aspx")
End Sub
However, unhandled exceptions are going to the generic error page instead of the informative yellow screen of death preferred by developers. I can comment out the redirect in global.asax, but then I need to remember to change it for the production environment. Is there a way I can check in Application_Error whether I am remote or not to determine whether to redirect?

I have a problem with large respones and IIS7, the server runs out of memory. I've written the test code below that works pretty much like my real code... When i start to download the file i can se the memory usage rise until it hits 100% and Firefox complaints about lost connection to server, looks like IIS7 does not release cache or something.. Works in IIS6 by the way

When I have a HttpHandler class in C#/ASP.NET mapped to a file extension in IIS any file with that extension fails to download/display in web browsers (it's downloaded as a 0-byte file in some browsers and nothing at all in other browsers). After removing the application mapping for the HttpHandler in IIS so it doesn't call the IHttpHandler class in C#, the web browser downloads the file successfully.
This was tested with an IHttpHandler class in C# that has an empty ProcessRequest method.
