I am doing some redirecting of old url in global.asax's application_beginrequest. Redirecting works fine when getting the url's using an http get but not when using an http head request.

I just bought an old domain name and am looking to redirect as many old URLs as possible to acquire backlinks intended for the original owner for pagerank reasons. The original site had a lot of static pages ending in .htm which need to be redirected to directories. I use httpcontext in my Global.asax file to initiate 301 redirects and this works great on folder names or .aspx files, but whenever I try to redirect a .htm it fails.

View 3 RepliesI am trying to call a webservice that requires me to authenticate and then pass the session id returned from the authenticate method to subsequent web service calls. The session id has to be passed as HTTP request header. So I tried using the following code to add the session id to a HTTP request header:

The header is supposed to be called "Cookie" and the SID contains the session id. The problem is the last line in the code above gives an exception saying "Operation is not supported on this platform". I am running this code on my dev machine with with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 and IIS 5.1. I haven't been able to find any solution to this problem after days of searching. I also tried to deploy my web app on IIS directly but had the same error.
I have a site with multiple domains pointing to it. I wanted to redirect all requests to main domain so I've created a method called RedirectToRealDomain("domain.com") to check and redirect all requests to my preferred domainAt the moment it lives on Session_Start but I am planing to move it to Application_BeginRequest event. As I understand Session_Start only raised when new session started but Application_BeginRequest raised on all requests. RedirectToRealDomain method doesn't do any DB lookups or anything expensive apart from comparing strings.

(I know that this isn't the conventional way of going about this) but it works on my computer and not on the server.I have a global.asax file in my root dir and Application_BeginRequest checks if the user is requesting a particular file. If they are logged in, it allows access. If they are not logged in they are redirected to the default page.My problem is this: My code works on my personal computer but does not work on the server. Do I have to configure a setting in the web.config or adjust something on the server? Code:

View 3 RepliesI know there is a couple answered questions on here regarding "request scoped" globals, but I want to nit-pick on something specifically and maybe squeeze some extra enlightenment out of one or two of you.I have an ASP.NET C# Website and a static Dictionary of objects (loaded from DB once on Application start). Each page request will need to do a lookup in the Dictionary (based on a key derived from the request url/etc) and get the appropriate object.The issue is I'm trying to maximize efficiency by reducing the lookups to the Dictionary per Request. Doing just a single lookup within a Page itself is easy enough and I can pass the object to sub controls, etc too.. but global.asax is separate from the Page and it also needs to use the object (in Application_BeginRequest and Session_Start).
So is doing a Dictionary lookup once in Application_BeginRequest, once (when necessary) in Session_Start and once in the Page negligible speed wise, even if there are many requests coming in every second?I would like it if I could just have a Request scoped global variable that I can easily call upon.. the only one I see available though is HttpContext.Current.Items and that is a Dictionary itself.Am I beingridiculously nit-picky with my concern over efficiency? or will these milliseconds (nanoseconds?) get me in the long run when more and more requests are being made?
PS. I currently only have around 100 objects in the Dictionary although this may increase in the future.
We're trying to implement functionality that intercepts, inspects, and alters if needed data in the Request.QueryString and Request.Form collections.
Since Request.QueryString and Request.Form are readonly, is it possible to use a HttpModule to do this without Reflection or Response.Redirect?
We're thinking that we can construct a new HttpRequest, and replace the original one. Would there be any implications in doing this?
I know mocking this object is impossible without using HttpRequestWrapper, but wasn't sure whether ASP.NET sets other things beyond the constructor.

View 1 RepliesI have created a dynamic signature for our members in Asp.net 2.0 with VB code behind that they can use as a signature in various message boards using an http handler.This is the first time I have evered used a http handler and I am probably missing a step on how to use it.The direct url to the signature is:

This works fine on most message boards and if you copy the link directly in a browser window, but not in other message boards.In order for this signature to work on all message boards, the url syntax would need to be as follows:[URL] or something similar where the URL does not have question marks, equal signs and the file name ends in .png .How can I go about doing this where the link will go to my http handler and overlay text, etc.

I cannot use the IIS7 URL Rewriter because I need to perform database lookups as part of my URL rewriting.
I have researched this extensively but have not had any luck finding a solution.
The only alternative I can think of is to use a dynamically created canonical link in my page headers.
Our site uses urlRewriter http module that does the url rewriting for us. I want to create another http module that will handle our customize URL redirects. Now I want this new customize http module to be call before the UrlRewriter module (to avoid page not found messages the UrlRewriter generates). Is there a way we can contol the calling order ?

This handler is called from a javascript and the returning xml is consumed directly by a Virtual Earth (bing) map control on the same page. I am Encrypting/Decrypting URL parameters but any one can see the source html, copy the url and get access to the xml feed.Since the call is from javascript how can I prevent unauthorized access to the HTTP handler?

I am writing a custom HTTP module to implement user authentication and appropriate access rights. And for identifying access rights for the user also depends on identifying the client's machine details like IP address, machine name, etc. The access rights will depend based on from which location or machine the user is trying to login.
Can we get these details from the HttpApplication or HttpContext object?
