IIS 7.5 HttpModule - Setting Response.Filter Results In Chunked Encoding?

Feb 8, 2011

I'm trying to create a HttpModule that changes the Response.Filter like so(for this demonstration just set the filter back to itself):

public class ContentTrafficMonitor : IHttpModule
{
public void Init( HttpApplication context )
{
context.BeginRequest += OnBeginRequest;[code]....

Doing so sets the transfer encoding of the response to chunked, rather than using the Content-Length header.If I remove the line where the Response.Filter is set, the response does have the Content-Length header. Our application depends on the Content-Length header, is there any way to prevent this behavior?

.NET/IIS6 - Disable Chunked Encoding When Using Dynamically Compressed Content?

Oct 7, 2010

I'm running ASP.NET on an IIS6 server. Right now the server is set up to compress dynamically generated content, mainly to reduce the page size of ASPX files that are being retrieved.

Once of the ASPX files has the following bit of code, used to fetch a file from the database and send it to the user:

Response.Clear();
Response.Buffer = true;
Response.ContentType = Document.MimeType;[code]....

The download itself works perfectly. However, the person downloading the file doesn't get a progress bar, which is incredibly annoying.

From what research I've been doing, it seems that when IIS sets the transfer-encoding to chunked when compressing dynamic content, which removes the content-length header as it violates the HTTP1.1 standard when doing that.

What's the best way to get around this without turning dynamic compression off at the server level? Is there a way through ASP.NET to programatically turn off compression for this response? Is there a better way to go about doing things?

C# - HttpModule To Write Out JavaScript Script References To The Response

Mar 11, 2010

On my page in the Page_Load event I add a collection of strings to the Context object. I have an HttpModule that will fire EndRequest and retrieve the collection of strings. What I then do is write out a script reference tag (based on the collection of strings) to the response. The problem is that the page reads the script reference but doesn't retrieve the contents of the file (I imagine because this is occurring in the EndRequest event). I can't fire the BeginRequest event because I won't have access to the Context Items collection.

I tried to also registering an HttpHandler which Processes the request of the script reference but I can't access the collection of strings in the Context.Items from there.

C# - Using Response.Filter With Response.TransmitFile?

Aug 10, 2010

I'm using Response.Filter in order to implement stream compression in accordance with HTTP Request Header Accept-Encoding

Here's the important stuff:

if (AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate") || AcceptEncoding == "*")
{
HttpApp.Response.Filter = new DeflateStream(PreviousOutputStream, CompressionMode.Compress);
HttpApp.Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "deflate");
}

By and large this works as intended. However, I'm in a situation where I'm using an ActionResult on an MVC Controller to serve up files to the user agent:

Response.Clear();
Response.Headers["Content-Type"] = contentType;
Response.Headers["Content-Length"] = contentLength;
if (Request.QueryString["dl"] == "1")
{
Response.Headers["Content-Disposition"] = "attachment; filename=" + fileInfo.Name;
}
Response.Flush();
Response.TransmitFile(fileInfo.FullName);

To be more exact, the action method returns new EmptyResult() after the Response.TransmitFile() call. This works exactly as intended without the Response.Filter modification.

In this situation, the response entity reaches the user agent garbled and unintelligible. FireFox's Poster addon shows empty entities or jumbled entities coming back.

C# - Filter Results With Checkboxes?

Feb 16, 2011

I have a list of about 20 products, each with up to 30 possible attributes. I'm trying to figure out the best way to use checkboxes (representing the 30 possible attributes) on a form to filter the products, so that only products with the matching attributes would be shown. I can use SQL Server 2005, but it seems like that might be overkill.

(Additional) Edit: Ok, given the data structure below, how would you query the database to return products that have ALL of the matching features? Say Product #1 has features 1, 2 and 3. Product # 2 has features 2, 3 and 4. A query for features 1 and 3 should return Product #1, but not Product #2.

Products table
productID int
productname nvarchar(50)
Features table
featureID int
featurename nvarchar(50)
FeatureMap table
featuremapID int
productID_fk int
featureID_fk int

MVC :: Filter Forms And Posting Results

Feb 8, 2010

I have a page which is used to filter through a list of jobs. The form is built dynamically with values available in a database (ex. education level, element, full/part time, etc). I have checkboxes and radio buttons.

On submit, I am able to pass the FormCollection, loop through all that, generate my parameters, pass them on to my stored procedure, and return the resulting job list. The problem is that when the page reloads with the results, the filters are reset. How would I make sure that the search parameters (filters), are kept ? How would I re-select the fields in my form ?

Access :: How To Connect With Database And Filter Results

Apr 16, 2010

I have a task in which i have to compare 2 access databases

and in these 2 databases, there is a field "Customer_Name" Let's name both databases as DatabaseA and DatabaseB

In DatabaseA there is a list of Customer_Name that includes all the customers

Now I have to match this CustomerList with "Customer_Name" field present in DatabaseB

If Customer Name of DatabaseA is present in Customer Name of DatabaseB then leave it as it is

If Customer Name of DatabaseA is not present in Customer Neme of DatabaseB then rename the name of that customer as "NA" in DatabaseA'S Customer Name field

So i have to perform these 2 above mentioned things, is it possible to do it in asp.net coding ? just with a press of button (in button click even) to save time as the list of customers includes 3000 customers approx

SQL Reporting :: Setting Date Filter In SSRS?

Jan 28, 2011

I'm trying to create a report (rdl) againt SP list.

I have a Date parameter, just 1.

When a user is selecting a date. It checks against my queried date, a day before and a day after. It works fine.

When a user is NOT selecting the date. I want the my queried date between a MINIMUM date and a MAXIMUM date. Since I couldn't find the Min & Max date in SSRS report filtering, I trying to hard code the date.

I tried DateValue(...with variety of different format...), as well as CDate(...with variety of different format...).

None of them is working. What exactly is the format SSRS accepting?

As for my CDate(Fields!ows_Date.Value)'s result, it is displaying as "yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss", I also tried that format, and still, not working.

<Filter>
<FilterExpression>=CDate(Fields!ows_Date.Value)</FilterExpression>
<Operator>Between</Operator>
<FilterValues>
<FilterValue>=IIf(IsDate(Parameters!DateParameter.Value), DateAdd("d", -1, Parameters!DateParameter.Value),
DateValue("01/01/1900"))</FilterValue>
<FilterValue>=IIf(IsDate(Parameters!DateParameter.Value), DateAdd("d", 1, Parameters!DateParameter.Value), DateValue("01/01/2100"))</FilterValue>
</FilterValues>

Setting Masterpage Literal Results In Blank Output?

Nov 22, 2010

Trying to output the PageName in a masterpage.

Masterpage has a Literal in which I am setting by accessing a property on the MasterPage "PageTitle".

<head runat="server">
<title><asp:Literal ID="litTitle" runat="server"/></title>
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="head" runat="server" />
</head>

The child page is like this:

<asp:Content runat="server" ContentPlaceHolderID="content">
<%
MasterPage master = Master as MasterPage;
master.PageName = "Log in";
%>
</asp:Content>

And the property PageName is coded thusly:

private string _pageName;
public string PageName
{
get
{
return _pageName;
}
set
{
_pageName = value;
litTitle.Text = _pageName;
}
}

I'm guessing this is because the page output has already been rendered, but as I say I don't know enough about ASP.NET. I guess I'm after something similar to PHPs ob_start().

Setting Content - Type Of Empty Response In MVC

Dec 27, 2010

In order to support a legacy application that's in the field, I need my ASP.NET MVC app to return an empty response that also has a Content-Type. One of IIS, ASP.NET, or ASP.NET MVC is removing my Content-Type when I send back a null response. Is there any way around this? (While not requiring an empty response with a set Content-Type would obviously be the ideal solution, the clients are already out there, and many of them cannot be upgraded.)

EDIT: Since there was a request for code: I'm proxying the request from the new web application to the one that older clients rely on. To do this, I have a subclass of ActionResult, called LegacyResult, that you can simply return for those methods that need to be handled by the old software. This is the relevant part of its code:

public override void ExecuteResult(ControllerContext context)
{
using (var legacyResponse = GetLegacyResponse(context))
{
var clientResponse = context.HttpContext.Response;
clientResponse.Buffer = false;
clientResponse.ContentType = legacyResponse.ContentType; /* Yes, I checked that legacyResponse.ContentType is never string.IsNullOrEmpty */
if (legacyResponse.ContentLength >= 0) clientResponse.AddHeader("Content-Length", legacyResponse.ContentLength.ToString());
var legacyInput = legacyResponse.GetResponseStream();
using (var clientOutput = clientResponse.OutputStream)
{
var rgb = new byte[32768];
cb;
while ((cb = legacyInput.Read(rgb, 0, rgb.Length)) > 0)
{
clientOutput.Write(rgb, 0, cb);
}
clientOutput.Flush();
}
}
}

If legacyInput has data, then Content-Type is set appropriately. Otherwise, it's not. I can actually kluge the old backend to send an empty v. non-empty response for exactly the same request, and observe the difference in Fiddler.

EDIT 2: Poking around with Reflector reveals that, if headers have not been written at the time that HttpResponse.Flush is called, then Flush writes out the headers itself. The problem is that it only writes out a tiny subset of the headers. One of the missing ones is Content-Type. So it seems that, if I can force headers out to the stream, I can avoid this problem.

Why Is Cookie Available In Request Immediately After Setting Using Response

Aug 4, 2010

In pageload, if you do Response.Cookies.Add(..., immediately in the next line, you can access that cookie via Request.Cookies(... I know that under the covers, the cookie is added to Request.Cookies by .net, but the original request never had that cookie.

If what I'm saying is correct, why is it this way? Shouldn't the cookie be available in the following request? Shouldn't the immediate access to Request.Cookies(... be null?
