IIS Session State Server Stops Working After 30-60 Minutes?
Feb 25, 2011
So we have three 2008 R2 Servers where two are configured to be web servers (IIS 7.5), and the third a session state server. I have set the SessionState and MachineKey settings in the applications web.config. After I restart the two web servers I can log into one server, then change the IP address to the other server, and I am still logged in. Success.
I can typically log in/out with any user account I want, change the ip address back and forth, and all is well until some random time between 30-60 minutes when I log in to one server, change the IP address, and the new server asks for credentials.
This is the sessionState setting in both web.configs:
<sessionState mode="StateServer" stateConnectionString="tcpip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:42424" cookieless="false" timeout="30"/>
The application resides under the default web site, and uses the default application pool. I am using forms authentication with a timeout of 20 minutes. I am not receiving any error events on any of the three servers when this happens, and restarting the two web servers fixes the problem for a while. The two web servers are not clustered per-se, but will be served round-robin via a network device.

I'm building a website in ASP.NET with C# code behind files, I'll be using the site on shared hosting due to price, and one of my aims was to have a stored procedure scheduled to run every 1 hour in MySQL and update my database.
Unforunately security arrangements on shared hosting means that users cannot schedule stored procedures, so I decided to tackle the problem another way.
I created a timer in my website inside its own class file in the App_Code folder, it basically starts a timer and then the time elapsed event connects to my database and calls the stored procedure. I then built an admin page that allows me to see the status of this thread (started/stopped) and allows me to start/stop and restart it.
It's installed on my test site that I run from my home PC using Win7 and IIS, and it works beautifully, I can stop start the service and watch the database tick up when it's running...
HOWEVER...it only seems to run for 20 minutes before it stops, I thought maybe it was the garbage collection killing it since that's mentioned in some timer examples but I've added a GC.KeepAlive(Timer) and that's not . I'm really stumped as to what is stopping the timer, it's functionality is dead on the money and how I want it, but it just stops, always after almost exactly 20 minutes.
[Code]....

Have not run the ASP.NET Development Server for a while. Today I copied a production website to my workstation and ran it with VS 2008. The following error message popped up. What is the problem with the ASP.NET development Server on my workstation? The website on the Production server still ran okay.Unable to make the session state request to the session state server. Please ensure that the ASP.NET State service is started and that the client and server ports are the same. If the server is on a remote machine, please ensure that it accepts remote requests by checking the value of KEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesaspnet_stateParametersAllowRemoteConnection.
If the server is on the local machine, and if the before mentioned registry value does not exist or is set to 0, then the state server connection string must use either 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' as the server name.

I'm using the full-text feature on SQL Server 2008 RC2. Everything had been working well until today. I wanted to change the language for word breakers from Neutral to Slovakia. After I did that, I can't perform full-text search anymore. It simply give me no rows. I even deleted the old full-text catalog and created a new one and populated it, but it still gave no solutions. I tried to query dm_fts_index_keywords_by_document on my table and get only 1 row with a display term END OF FILE.

I'm trying to write some code that checks the number of days between two dates, when I set the date on my IIS7 server to anytime in the future I get the standard "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" screen. This happens if I comment out all my date checking code, with todays date it loads with any future date it doesn't. I've tried rerunning IISReset which makes no difference.

When running the ASP.NET Development Server, everything is working fine. However, when I deploy my asp.net application to the production server (IIS 7.0 integrated mode, fresh install), my location tags in my web.config file are being ignored.
Case in point: I'm using forms authentication, and when the user arrives at my login.aspx page, the external css & js files are not being loaded...even though I have specified that those files should be available to all users (auth'd or not). However, once the user is logged in, the files do in fact load.
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="~/Account/Login.aspx" timeout="2880" />
</authentication>
<authorization>
<deny users="?" /> <!-- Restrict anonymouse user access -->
</authorization>
And the exception to my css file...
<location path="Styles/xtools.css">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow users="*"/>
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
I've verified that the path to the css file is accurate.
--EDIT Forgot to mention, I have tried creating a web.config file in the targetted folder as well...still not working.

I'm working in a web application that uses InProc sesssion to store data then we decided to decided to work with out of process session state. But now I tried to Implement that but it is not working
Note: I use visual studio web development server.
Here is what I did in the web.config fil:
<sessionState mode="StateServer" cookieName="ASP.NET_SessionId" stateConnectionString="tcpip=127.0.0.1:42424"
cookieless="UseCookies" timeout="10"/>
And to enable session state in all pages:
<pages theme="Blue" enableSessionState="true">
Then I started the aspnet_state service on my pc.
And I made a test to see if the session is working but unfortunately it is not working

I have a div called address which as a textarea. When I click a hyperlink, it toggles the div up and down. After clicking a an asp.net button the div collapses which is fine, but I noticed the url turns from [URL] to [URL] and now the toggle does not work. Here is the script:
$(document).ready(function () {
$('#myAddress').click(function () {
ShowHideAddressBox();
});
$('#arrowIndicator').click(function () {
ShowHideAddressBox();
});
});
function ShowHideAddressBox() {
var str = $("#myAddress").text();
if (str == "Hide") {
$("#myAddress").html("Click here");
$("#arrowIndicator").attr("src", "/Shared/Images/misc/arrow_state_grey_expanded.png");
}
else {
$("#myAddress").html("Hide");
$("#arrowIndicator").attr("src", "/Shared/Images/misc/arrow_state_grey_collapsed.png");
}
$('#checkAddress').toggle('normal');
}
The server-side button click just sets some values in a couple textboxes. In my master page, I have the following line as well:
<asp:ScriptReference Assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35"
Name="MicrosoftAjax.js" Path="http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/3.5/MicrosoftAjax.js" />

the site normally works fine in all popular browsers including firefox, chrome, safari and ie.
but doesn't work in ie 8 when it's redirected via a proxy server and it gives an error saying
"Message: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to Response.Write(), response filters, HttpModules, or server trace is enabled. I run a web site with VB.Net and Sql Server, at a web host (so I use one instance of their Sql Server db). I now get this nasty message when trying to access the web site: Column 'kryptotext' does not belong to table tabellen. I have seen this before (but with other columns mentioned), and when I spoke to the tech guys they said that the server gives up after five (or so) invalid requests. The old problems I had were due to the fact that I had used Application variables - at least the problems appeared when I added the variable and diappeared when I deleted them.
This time, I have done very little. I ran a new check when some items of a gridview were databound, and if a condition was ok, then a mail should be sent and an update take place in the db. For now, this will not be true, so the new code doesn't fire, and I have now reverted to the old code anyway. I got htis message this morning, and then it has worked the entire day without me changing the code at all, and now it stopped working again, so to me it seems as if it's either not my code's fault, or I somehow flood the db server with requests (but the web site is new so there are really no users yet). One more thing I have added: I imported the Net.Mail namespace to the baseclass I'm using for the aspx pages, but I can't believe that has anything to do with this.
I asked the tech guys again, and the server has been working the whole day. Here's the web site: [URL] I am able to connect to the admin part of the web site, so it's just the public web site itself that doesn't run. What should I do? Edit: Now, 30 minutes later, it works again. I haven't done anything, in fact I had dinner now.

Customer were getting "View State Validation Error" due to worker process recycling at our production webserver and to fix that i applied machinekey and then move my Session state Mode from In Proc to State Server to retain session data and not kick out the customer to relogin. I had serialization issue with one object which has to be stored in session but when i moved it out of session i could able to resolve the issue.
But doing all these i was partly successfull in keeping the user in their session when Worker Process recycle event occurs.I was able to refresh the page or make a post back by clicking the refresh button and also able to retain the session values. But the Problem occurs when sending asynchronous request to server which we do periodically every 15 minutes from the moment the user logs in.The web page doesnot update data on website when sending asynchronous request.By Debugging I found at this particular code point it fails to make a postback which is required.
<%=GetHintFromServer%> (When there is no Worker Process recycle i t gets replaced by
WebForm_DoCallback('__Page',message,ShowHint,null,null,false) on postback) Everything works fine when there is no Worker Process Recyling but when it happens looks like sending request asynchronously using javascript fails .Remember When I make a post back by manually clicking submit button everything works fine.
SendRequest(Asynchronous)
function SendRequest(msg, isBusy, chartMsg, vesselMsg)
{
try
{
//confirm("msg"+msg+"isBusy"+isBusy+"chartMsg"+chartMsg+"VesselMsg"+vesselMsg);
_busy = isBusy;
if(chartMsg != null)
{
//confirm("chartMsg"+chartMsg);
_element.SetMessage(true, chartMsg);
}
if(vesselMsg != null)
{
confirm("chartMsg"+vesselMsg);
_element.ShowVesselLoading(true, vesselMsg);
}
_stuckWatchdog = setTimeout( "ClearPendingRequest();", 60000);
var message = msg;
var context = '';
<%=GetHintFromServer%>
}
catch(e)
{
alert( "Exception error on SendRequest(): " + e);
}

Our ASP.NET App uses ASP State Session Management and has been rebuilt about 2 years ago [With .NET Framework 2.0]. We are currently in .NET framework 3.5 and have moved to SQL Server 2008 - but continue to use the same ASPState database. The State database has been upgraded to SQL Server 2008. Since then we have are seeing timouts/locks on ASPStateTempSessions table. I am wondering if we have to rebuild this database from scratch with some newer scripts?

In my database I have already installed the aspnetdb membership tables and process (think that was running : aspnet_regsql.exe) with all my other custom build tables for my project. All works fine.I want to use SQL server session state. (Asp.net 2.0, SQL server 2005)My project will be on a SHARED HOSTING environment, and I only want ONE database that holds all I need ( membership, custom tables, session state table, etc)I see two files in : C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727
InstallSqlState.sql
InstallSqlStateTemplate.sql
I assume I run the "InstallSqlStateTemplate.sql" and follow instruction from this reference to SQL server session state operational in my single project database : [URL]

I have encountered this problem before on a few shared hosts but cant remember the fix. I have spent almost 2 days googling and I have even gone through 2 external hd's of backups of old projects and read the web.configs but I just cant put my find it and I dont think I am googling the correct terms...
I am using Mysql Connector/Net to store asp session state.
The mysql db is on the hosting server ( I have no mysql locally).
Opening a page locally creates a session in the db.
Opening a page on the host does not.
I have seen this issue before but was a long time ago and I have searched a few of the answered questions here but not too extensive, I'm sick of searching.
