I have a LINQ query like this:

What I would like to get is a query with an empty record
var empty = new {CategoryId="", Category=""};
on the very top of query1. I think this can be accomplished by using the union operator, just don't know how.

I want to insert the student registration entry through my web form. but want to use proper object oriented method. like by create the object as "Student" it will have required property. and want to insert new node with incremental (auto increment) Student ID. In my View, I have numerous Html.CheckBox controls, they get passed to my Controller as a string collection via a JQuery Ajax call. The values of each checkbox are seperated by a comma(,). In my detailsview, I have an emptydatatemplate set up to allow users to enter new records. The code works. However, once the record is inserted, the detailsview defaults to a standard insert screen. I know this will cause confusion for the users. I would prefer the detailsview to either show in edit mode or a read-only mode. I have used detailsview.changemode and detailsview.currentmode in the custom sub created for the add new button of the emptydatatemplate- neither of which do what I was hoping. It would be even better if when there was no data, it defaulted to the insert screen (which seems like that should be an easy, no-brainer way for .net to function) but it doesn't. Or, I don't know how to accomplish it.
I don't want to force the user to click cancel after inserting an item through the emptydatatemplate just to be able to use the detailsview for other records.
I'm very new on VWD, but I got the hang of it for the past 2 weeks(thank you for all the videos posted here in ASP.NET),but I'm really weak on the coding part(vb & c#),except for all the sample shown on the tutorials. Anyways, I have a simple project that
does insert, update & delete to SQL express using the details view. But to complete my project, I need to add a button that will create an event to restore the very last record inserted in SQL and display it back into the details view for minor modification
and nserted again as the newest record with the mod. I'm doing this so user, doesn't need to re-key-in redundant information, like names, original date & time etc, and just make modification on the description of the last record.....
I use GridView & FormView to update a record. but when I click the "save" button, throw an except : FormView must be in the insert mode to insert a record. The record has been updated success, and I didn't change the mode of the FormView, how this error comes?
View 3 RepliesConseptually what I'm doing is simple, and technically it may even be simple, but I'm still rusty. Here's what I'm trying to do:
I have a webform that allows the user to enter a new record, and in there I have also included a couple FileUpload controls. Upon clicking the "Save" button, I'm saving the details entered into one table (ITEMS), and also inserting the FileUpload details (path, id, upload_user) into another table ATTACHMNTS). Because one ITEM can have many attachments, I needed to split the tables up. So on save, I need to save the ITEM, save the ATTACHMENT, and then also put the ITEM_ID in the ATTACHMENT table. I'm second guessing myself because I think all I'd have to do is after I do the ITEM insert, do a SELECT MAX on the ITEM table and hold the newest (MAX) id in a variable and then use it in the ATTACHMENTS update. I'm not 100% on this because there IS a chance that someone else could save a few milliseconds later and I'll link the wrong ITEM. See my delima?

I am trying to take all the records from a table using a linq query:
var result = context.tablename.select(x=>x);
This results in less rows than the normal sql query which is select * from tablename;
This table has more than 5 tables as child objects (foreign key relations: one to one and one to many etc)..
This result variable after executing that linq statement returns records with all child object values without doing a include statement.. I don't know is it a default behavior of EF 4.0 . I tried this statement in linqpad also..but there is no use... But interesting thing is if I do a join on the same table with another one table is working same is sql inner join and count is same..but I don't know why is it acting differently with that table only.. Is it doing inner joins with all child tables before returning the all records of that parent table?
I am writing a linq query to select a blogpost,

The blogpost i am testing got 3 tags attached to it. The table structure is:
(table)BlogPost -> (table)BlogPostTags <- (table)Tags
So the BlogPostTags table only contains 2 fields, BlogPostID and TagID.
When i run the query above i get 3 results back. Same blogpost 3 times but with 1 tag in each. It should return 1 post with 3 tags. The problem lies in the Tags query above.

As you can see, some nodes do not always contain data for ever member of staff; only Directors have biographies.
I access the values like this...

Once it gets to staffBio I get an error saying "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." obviously because that node does not exist.
My question is how can I assign the value to a variable even when it is empty without having to do a conditional check before each assignment?
