Get The Value Of An XML Element Using Linq Even When Empty?
May 13, 2010
I am using ASP.NET in VB.
I have an XML document which contains all the details of staff in my company...
<staff>
<staffName>Test Staff</staffName>
<staffTitle>Slave</staffTitle>
<staffDepartmentName>Finance</staffDepartmentName>
<staffOffice>London</staffOffice>
<staffEmail>t.staff@company.co.uk</staffEmail>
<staffPhone>0207 123 456</staffPhone>
<staffNotes>Working hours Mon to Thurs 9.15 - 5.15</staffNotes>
<staffBio></staffBio>
</staff>
As you can see, some nodes do not always contain data for ever member of staff; only Directors have biographies.
I access the values like this...
For Each staff In ( _
From matches In myXMLFile.Descendants("staff").Descendants("staffName") _
Where matches.Nodes(0).ToString.ToLower.Contains(LCase(search)) _
Order By matches.Value _
Select matches)......
Once it gets to staffBio I get an error saying "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." obviously because that node does not exist.
My question is how can I assign the value to a variable even when it is empty without having to do a conditional check before each assignment?

For coonverting Linq to DataTable I am using the following Extension Method(Taken from Stackoverflow)
L[code]....
The Extension Method creates XML file.But for null values no element is created in XML file.Say if Commission field is null then commission element is missing in Xml generation.
I want to insert element with empty string for null values (ref type) and (0.00) for decimals and (0) for integers. where do i need to make change?

I have a class library which has my LINQ doc in it. I added a stored procedure and I get the following in my .dbml.layout :
[Code]....
I include a reference to the dll of the class library to my web project and I get an error about value being returned as int where I am trying to put contents into a datalist or similar.
Code in class that calls this SP :
[Code]....
So I switched code to the following in my dbml.layout document :
[Function(Name="dbo.sp_newsSearch")]public IEnumerable<news_search_result> sp_newsSearch([Parameter(DbType="VarChar(200)")] string searchVal){IExecuteResult result = this.ExecuteMethodCall(this, ((MethodInfo)(MethodInfo.GetCurrentMethod())), searchVal);return ((IEnumerable<news_search_result>)(result.ReturnValue));}
And included the following in an external file news_search_result.cs
[Code]....
But now I just get nothing returned. Is this wrong way of calling a SP via LINQ? or have I just put the wrong return type on my LINQ class?

I have a LINQ query like this:
var query1 = from x in db.FaqCategories select new { x.CategoryId, x.Category };
What I would like to get is a query with an empty record
var empty = new {CategoryId="", Category=""};
on the very top of query1. I think this can be accomplished by using the union operator, just don't know how.

I am new to LINQ but not >net. I do understand SQLDataSource, etc. I was just told by a coworker not to use a LINQ to SQL Class for my new project (Bank.dbml). I was told to use instead the ADO.Net Entity Data Model (bank.edmx).
BankModel.edmxBank.dbml
When only using ADO.Net Entity Data Model I try to associate a GridView with a new LinqDataSource I get no options. When I add a LINQ to SQL Class I get the option to use it but it is empty. Is this because all my LINQ classes are mapped in the ADO.Net Entity Data Model (bank.edmx)? Can someone tell me (or point me to) what the differences are in these two?

I have an XML file of the following kind:
<Root>
<question QuestionIndex="0">
<QuestionTitle>What is the meaning of life?</QuestionTitle>
<UserChoice>1</UserChoice>
<question QuestionIndex="1">
<QuestionTitle>How much is 1+1?</QuestionTitle>
<UserChoice>3</UserChoice>
</Root>
I want to get the element "question" from the XML, if given the "QuestionIndex" attribute. I tried the following code:
XElement q = (XElement)from question in doc.Descendants("Root")
where (int)question.Attribute("QuestionIndex") == index
select question;
but it throws InvalidCastException.

I'm looking at an asp.net application, i notice that there are assemblies defined into two places. In web.config there is configuration/system.web/compilation/assemblies/add elements. In the project file there are references setup under the Project/ItemGroup/Reference elements.
I was wondering, what is the difference between assemblies/references added in either location?

I have noticed that when I create a website in a network drive and use the Ajax toolkit I get :
Element 'ToolkitScriptManager' is not a known element
I also noticed that after adding the ToolkitScriptManager it doesn't add the ID in the source code, it looks like this:
<asp:ToolkitScriptManager runat="server"></asp:ToolkisScriptManager>
Is missing the ID="ToolkitScriptManager1" part.
This doesn't happen when I create the site in my local drive. Is there a workaround to this. Even if I add the missing parts, I keep getting the same error.

You're making a website with ASP.NET 4.0/C#, although xml alone is suitable for this example. The site will have a site map and a default page with a menu control, as follows:Web.sitemap
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<siteMap xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/AspNet/SiteMap-File-1.0" >
<siteMapNode url="~/default.aspx" title="Home" description="">
<siteMapNode url="~/1.aspx" title="Link 1" description="" />
<siteMapNode url="~/2.aspx" title="Link 2" description="" />
<siteMapNode url="~/3.aspx" title="Link 3" description="" />

Element 'content' is not a known element. this can occur if there is a compilation error in the website, or the web.config file is missing.
<asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1" Runat="Server">
<asp:Content --- showed a green wavy line , and on hover displayed the above error.
Now I am having certain problems.
1. Visual Studio 2010 hangs when I try to use ToolBox.
2. Intellisense for asp.net controls is not working.
I have tried replacing web.config file (frm backup) , tried to debug - it doesnt show anything.
All other websites are working alright. Have problem with only one of the websites.

I upgraded from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and now the AJAX elements are not recognised by the source code editor, e.g. UpdatePanel, ScriptManager, etc. I get warnings in VS and no intellisense for those elements. When I run the site, all the AJAX controls work OK though.

I got this errors while trying to use an example from the ASP.NET 3.5 Unleashed book.
Webform1.aspx
[Code]....
LengthValidator.cs
[Code]....
As from the book's note, I think I added this line correctly:

However, the compiler kept complaining that:

I am using dotnetCHARTING: the dll is installed in the GAC and referenced in my web.config (all versions appear to match). The project has a reference to the dll.
web.config:
<add assembly="dotnetCHARTING, Version=5.3.3540.17054, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=af2cd47db69d93bd"/>
The site code compiles ok, but all aspx pages using the charting library complain that the Chart tag does not exist (warning that it might be a compile error). The aspx pages do not render the charts.
Each page has a reference to the assembly:
<%@ Register Assembly="dotnetCHARTING" Namespace="dotnetCHARTING" TagPrefix="dotnetCHARTING" %>

I have a sql database that on some field will have a empty string/field. I am using a Datalist to display my results. How do I not make the labels that are empty not display? Currently if the field is empty it will leave a space there which my goal is if the field is empty do not leave a white space instead move the other colunms up.

I am working with a gridview that pulls data from a SQL database based on selections in dropdown lists. The source table has six columns for attributes of the selection, but depending on what is chosen, there could be anywhere from one to six of those that are empty (all null values). When the column is empty, I would like to have it hidden so the page is less clunky and confusing.
I've searched around for an answer for the past couple days, but what I have found so far is either related to hiding columns that you know are empty which I will not know or removing them in the SQL code which I think doesn't work if the column is called for in the gridview code and doesn't exist in the query.
