Installation :: Debug And Run Classic ASP On IIS7 Using VWD08 Express?
Mar 7, 2010
I'm trying the above - Visual Web Developer 2008 express edition with SQL Server 2005 express using VB code behind on ASP.net 3.5 framework. I need to incorporate and amend some externally supplied classic asp pages, so switched to local IIS7 for compilation/run. I can run these pages, but am unable to amend them and have the changes reflected in what I see. Is this possible with this setup? Is there a configuration setup that I may need? Has anyone successfully done the above before?

First, a little background. I have written a custom HTTP compression module for ASP.NET. My development machine has Windows 7 Ultimate, which comes with IIS7. My production environment uses IIS6.
The problem I'm having is, Resource Expert Droid (redbot.org) tells me that I need to add a header to my response to properly support compression: "Vary: Accept-Encoding"
On IIS7 in integrated mode, it works properly. However, in classic mode, which is how my application ultimately runs, I cannot get my code to output this header using any of Response.AppendHeader(), Response.Cache.SetVaryByCustom(), or Response.Cache.VaryByHeaders.

we are running a complex 64-bit ASP.NET 2.0 application on W2008 R2 Standard and stress tests done with VS2008 Team System have indicated that integrated pipeline mode is 30% slower than classic mode.
We have compared the application traces extensively and it appears that integrated mode is uniformly slower than classic. That is, there is no single point that causes delays in integrated mode.
This is quite the opposite to everything Microsoft says about the integrated pipeline, so it might be that there is something quite wrong with the configuration of the integrated mode or the server. But we have not found any settings that would have any effect on this. Some complaints that Sharepoint and reporting services are slower in integrated mode can be found, but our application does not use them so this is quite likely unrelated.

Does anybody knows if it is possible to make URL routing in a ASP.Net webforms website that is running under the Classic .NET AppPool.
I've tried a few things here, but it just works when I switch from Classic AppPool to Default AppPool.
** the web site MUST run under Classic AppPool.

I have a need to run an application in classic mode for backwards compatibility with a specific application, and am trying to understand what kind of impact that will have on the performance of an MVC application that is running on the site. If we put a few static file maps (for .js, .css, .png, etc) above the ASP.NET wildcard map to reduce the amount of processing by the ASP.NET handler, will we be approaching the integrated mode in terms of performance?
The thing i'm primarily concerned with is any effect this might have on output caching. I understand that integrated mode might (?) allow for the output cache to handle non ASP.NET content, but that isn't really a concern. We're more interested in ensuring that the MVC application has full use of the output cache. Empirically i've found that the two configurations operate on par when things go well, but if the page references resources that are not available, the integrated mode tends to fail much more quickly than the classic mode (e.g. 500 ms vs 10 seconds), reducing 'hang time' on the page load.

what needs to be done to debug a asp.net app using IIS7 instead of the Development server with VS2010. I have found multiple resources online that says how to do it and they all have different steps. I cannot seem to get it to work.

When I ran Vista (x64) Prem with IIS7 and VS2008 sp1, I could press F5 and start debugging a web application and the debugge would run as long as I needed. I got a new PC that has Win 7 (x64). Now, the debugger will run 30-60 seconds and then quits. The web application still runs but the debugger shows that it is not in debug mode and the breakpoints are no longer hit. I know you can attach to the w3wp process and debug that way, but has anyone found a way to keep the debugger running for as long as you need when you press F5??

Vs2008, Windows 7, IIS7, SSL using a self signed Cert. On my dev machine I'm not seeing a problem, but on a client machine it pops up the "this page contains both secure and nonsecure items" dialog on a page. In IE8, I have the local intranet / display mixed content option set to Prompt, but it isn't making a difference, what else needs to be set for me to see the problem?

i have an asp.net website which contains a link to a legacy site written in classic asp which has vb 6 classes (dll) in the back ground also.here is what i am trying to achieve:-i want to browse to the asp.net website using IE7,then when the link is clicked then enters the classic asp site i want to start debugging the classic asp and step through it.(also to make things worse, once a the vb6 class is instanciated, and a call make to its method i want to debug the method in the vb 6 code)My system :- XP Pro, IIS 5, Visual Studio 2005 (asp.net project ), Visual interdev 6 (classic asp project) Visual Basic 6 (vb 6 classes compiled into dll)i have been trying everything with no joy, there is lots on the net but nothing seems to have worked.i have the back office components installed so asp debugging is possible, i have configured the asp website s debugging is turned on.if i add a breakpoint to the classic asp site and hit the start button in visual interdev i can step through it fine.My problem is that if i attach interdev to a process (iexplorer.exe or dll.host) then the breakpoints are not hit. if anyone can help me with this it would be great.ont top of that, if anyone can explain to me how to also debug the vb6 dll code in visual basic 6 when it is called from the classic asp site that would be great!

I'm building a site using the .NET 4 framework using routing and MasterPages.
Because I'm using both routing and MasterPages, I can't see any way how to get value from control on the previous page. To solve this I've used the code behind to store the control's value in a session variable. Is there a way to retrieve a value from a control using PreviousPage or something when using Routing and MasterPages?
This works fine in VWD debug mode and in IIS 5.1, but when I try to deploy it on my Windows Server 2008 (IIS7.5) machine, it get this error:
Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the <configuration><system.web><httpModules> section in the application configuration.
Here is a copy of my web.config file:

I don't have web server account yet so I must test my applications with the Web Development Server under VS 2010 with C# but I read that I couldn't send emails under that server but I also read that I can send email with IIS7 Express and that's the main reason why I've install Webmatrix. Maybe someone can confirm this. So for the moment I am redirecting my emails into a local folder and it is working perfectly. Here is part of the code I've add to the Web.Config for doing that.

I'm stumped. I have a client site on a virtual private server - Windows Web Server 2008 SP2, IIS7, SQL Server 2008 Express.I'm trying to setup a second web application, to allow him to review updates prior to their going live. I've created the web application in IIS7, and I have added a second database to SQL Server. The second db is essentially a copy of the production db, with 'DEV' prefixed to the database name and a few new fields in a few tables. My production site works fine. However, the test site comes back with an SqlException: "Invalid column name 'version'." This is one of the new fields - which leads me to believe that my dev site is referring to the production database, and not the dev database. Connection strings, however, do point to different databases (although the login is the same for both):

I already have SQL Server (Developer Edition) installed on my computer. I'm learning ASP.NET by going through some video tutorials. These tutorials use VWD 2008 Express so I'm going to install that version (instead of 2010). Will the VWD installation recognize my existing version of SQL Server and connect to it properly after the install? I read something about VWD Express not working correctly with SQL Server Developer Edition.

I know how to switch to "Classic Mode" (from "Integrated Mode") in the full IIS via application pool settings. But I can't find how to do it in the current IIS Developer Express beta.
The MS Developer Express FAQ says it can be done, but not how. It's not in the WebMatrix GUI, as far as I can tell. Maybe customization of the Developer Express project file, but I don't see any documentation for that at all.
FYI, there is a Settings area where you can set SSL, CLR version (2.0 in this case), which is where I figure the Pipeline mode (Classic/Integrated) would be, but it's not there.
