If I use jQuery AJAX to call a specific ASP.NET page method how to have that method return a value back to the AJAX method that called it?
Update
My situation is I have an existing web application with many existing methods. I would like to be able to use jQuery to execute some of these methods and then update the UI with the results. My mandate is to stay away from ASP.NET AJAX and stick with jQuery. Management is concerned about continued development and support with ASP.NET AJAX from Microsoft. I agree with them.

Now hears the kicker, I am mostly using jqUery as UpdateInsertData() is a jquery Call and works fine. How do I use ValidateNameUpdateable to call jQuery to return the value from the c# method. . I believe this issue is with my jQuery Call as its just posting and I need to do a $.get or something?
function ValidateNameUpdateable()
{
$(document).ready(function ()
{
$.post("GridViewData.aspx")
});
}

I have .aspx page methods with return type of string, which work great. I am using some jQuery ajax, and some .NET Ajax "PageMethods.methodName" syntax from the client side to successfully call these page methods. I need to return xml from a page method.... I would LOVE to be able to return system.Xml.Linq.XElement type from page method. I get a serialization circular reference error when I attempt to return XElement or XDocument. I don't really want to return XML.ToString() to client, and then convert string to xml in javascript. What return page method return type(s) would allow me to retrieve xml with jQuery ajax call? I know json is the alternative, but will not give me what I need this time.

I'm using update panel in the master page. Half of my web page will retreive the data from the database in dynamic. As, my update panel is in master page(with ajax loader), it is taking much time for every event. Is there any other advanced method to get the data from the database instead of using update panel.

Here is the case, I have a datalist displaying a whole list of text files and I have a hyperlink with the title as the text and a navigateUrl that navigates the user to a page to display the file the user chose.
I have coded the hyperlink like so:
[Code]....
The problem I am facing is that I got this code snippet from another source and I don't know what does the StoryID={0} means. I do know that the eval statement would sent the storyID of the selected file to StoryDisplay.aspx, I just don't know how to retrieve the values from the second page.
P.S. the second page contains a title label and an area(enclosed in <div> tags) for the selected text to be displayed.

I'm looking to have a search page where a user will select an item from a listview, then then taken to another page that wil display data based on their original selection.
A user will type in a string and be presented with a list of usernames that are like that string, when they select a user name who's profile they would like to view I would like the page that they're taken to, to be that users profile.
How would I transfer the variable from the search page to the profile page, and when I work on the profile page, how can I access that variable?

Now When I select the particular page name from the ddlpagename, all the events (like page_load, grid events ,dropdown events) should be listed in other dropdown named ddlevent.

I have implemented a lot fo JQuery features into my ASP.Net web application. I am using JQuery, JQueryUI, JQuery Validation and a couple of other plugins. They are all coexisting and working fine. This one page in my app has the JQueryUI tabs, Modal progress pop-up working just fine. This page also has a couple of JQuery AJAX calls to my server side events. That all works fine!
I just added a Jquery date picker to one of the text boxes on the first tab on my data entry form and nothing happens or is displayed when you click on the date textbox. I am going to post the HTML markup for the page and my JQuery code. Please let me know if you see anything glaring? HTML

I have a page web method, and I need to get access to the headers, and particularly the uploaded files. Is this possible? Can a web method receive a file?If not, what would you recommend to upload files without post back? I am using the jQuery forms library that has support for this (and I have had it working with Django), however, I am having a hard time finding answers on how to do this with ASP.NET.
