MVC 2: Make The Ajax.Form To Fire The Client Side Validation With Data Annotation?
Mar 7, 2010
Here is the code I have so far:
[code]....
When I click submit, It does the validation on the server side, I kinda like it to validate on the Client instead of taking a trip to the server right away.

Something is wrong in ASP.NET MVC 2 on client side validation. If I have form for create records in database and all fields are required, validation is triggered only then when I write something in field and delete it. If I go to field, stay this field empty and press Tab key validation isn't triggered.
Here somebody else write about the same problem: [URL]

Is there a way that I can execute a javascript function after the client side validation occurs in asp.net?I have a couple validation controls on a page and an input button with CausesValidation=true. The OnClientClick handler executes javascript before the validation runs, but i want to run some functions afterwards.

Is there any way to add a confirmation dialog to a submit button when the form already has other validation controls and a summary control using "showmessagebox=true"? I tried adding
OnClientClick="return confirm('Are you sure?');" to the submit button, but that seems to block all of the other validation?

I'm using an entity model with metadata annotations. My controller method looks like this...
if (!ModelState.IsValid)
{
return View(model);
}
else
{
UpdateModel(model);
repo.Save();
return RedirectToAction("Index");
}
If I enable client side validation in the view I'll get the error per the Attributes from the metadata class. If I take clientside validation out, error gets thrown from saving to the DB rather than return the view with an Error Summary.
This is the top portion of my view....
<% using (Html.BeginForm())
{%>
<%: Html.ValidationSummary(true) %>
I've tried running without debugging (ctrl + f5) in debug and release mode as well as setting breakpoints and Debugging (f5) but it just seems weird to get Client side validation without server side validation. What am I missing here?

I have MaskedEditValidator, which set u pt ovalidate datetime entry into text box. After that the button (html button input control )is pressed in order to start some process. Button is running the client side function (JavaScript).
Now in case of wrong input validator shows proper message, but how I can prevent button to be pressed and start the process. I.e. is it possible to check on client side the status of the validation?

I am developing a web application that needs to retrieve, display and write data to an SQL database. I'm trying to use AJAX and Javascripts in order to populate fields, lists and data, and to have button and calendar controls on the page that can update the page without refreshing and losing the data page. Therefore, it's necessary that I find ways to doing as much as possible client-side, without page refreshes.
Now, for security purposes, I've heard that there's a method for retrieving a copy of all relevant data from SQL at loading time, keeping a copy of it, perhaps on a separate page, and send-retrieve-display this data on my page, and then, at Submission time, write this data back to the Server. This is to minimize hits to the Server and to preserve data integrity. I've heard that doing this is called using an Extender, but we can't find examples of how this works so far.

I'm interested in identifying a means to verify the server-side validation is performing as expected, but need to bypass the client-side validation being done using ASP.NET validation controls. To test this, I've tried using the form Poster add-on to Firefox that allowed me to get/modify the page contents and post it, but the .NET framework interpreted the submission as harmful and threw an application error ("A potentially dangerous Request.Form value was detected from the client").I've created a WinForm that includes a WebBrowser control and I'm able to manipulate the contents of the web page and invoke the button click, but am interested in seeing how to allow a postback with invalid input values. I don't want to assume the server-side validation works (even though I do check if Page.IsValid on the server on postback).This submits the web form in the WebBrowseer control and the expected client-side validation fires:
extendedWebBrowser1.Document.GetElementById(formButtonName).InvokeMember("click");
This is how I've manipulated some of the page contents (this just prevents submission):
mshtml.IHTMLDocument2 doc = extendedWebBrowser1.Document.DomDocument as mshtml.IHTMLDocument2;
string html = doc.body.innerHTML;
html.Replace("Page_ValidationActive = false", "Page_ValidationActive = true");
doc.body.innerHTML = html.ToString();
extendedWebBrowser1.Document.GetElementById(formButtonName).InvokeMember("click");

I have a username textbox on a form, that has a few validation rules applied to it via the DataAnnotation attributes:
[Required(ErrorMessage = "FTP login is required")]
[StringLength(15, ErrorMessage = "Must be 15 characters or fewer")]
[RegularExpression(@"[a-zA-Z0-9]*", ErrorMessage = "Alpha-numeric characters only")]
public string FtpLogin { get; set; }
I also have a button next to this text box, that fires off a jQuery ajax request that checks for the existence of the username as follows:
<button onclick="check(this);return false;" id="FtpLoginCheck" name="FtpLoginCheck">Available?</button>
I'm looking for a way of tieing the two together, so that the client-side validation is performed before the call to the "check(this)" in the onclick event.
Edit: To be more clear, I need a way to inspect or trigger the client-side validation result of the textbox, when I click the unrelated button beside it.
Edit: I now have the button JS checking for $("form").validate().invalid, but not displaying the usual validation messages.

I have a form that contains multiple and different input controls .. and I have two types of validation:
This type insures that the user input doesn't violate my application's constraints (required, max length, regExp).. and this is done on the client side using the ASP.NET Validation Controls .. and it's enforced by a server side validation.
This type works on a deeper level, like the database. it check if the entry is duplicate and any other check that can't be done on the UI level.
I use the ValidationSummary control to display the first type's errors, and a label for the second's type errors. I tried to test it with the JavaScript disabled and it worked fine, then I turned the JS back on and *Here comes the problem: *
I first try to raise an error on the db layer (by entering a name that already exists) and the error is displayed on the label and everything is good .. now I try to remove the name from the textbox and press the submit so I could raise a required field validator error the expected output is "This field is required" only but what I see is "the name already exists" and "This field is required".
I think it's because when the ASP.NET RequiredValidator works, it doesn't make a postback, so the database layer will never be validated and won't even get the label cleared!

In my view data class I have a List.
[Code]....
I have all the properties of the class Person as required using Data Annotations.
[Code]....
In the View I loop the List like this:
[Code]....
Generated HTML:
[Code]....
Result:
Does not work at all.
Other things I've tried:
Tried using these HTML Helper methods instead:
[Code]....
Generated output:
[Code]....
Result:
Interestingly, when I trigger a validation on the first textbox, it fires simultaneously for all of the textboxes. The rest of the textboxes do not trigger validation at all.
Looking at the generated id and names for the textboxes and their corresponding error text span element, they areall identical.
Anyone figure out how to use Client Validation with Data Annotations with a List in the view data,
supporting Model Binding?

I am trying to create a custom password validation attribute which has these requirements
1. cannot be empty.
2. doesn't contain space or other special chracters, which I'll define later.
3. length is between 6 - 12

it works fine on the server-side but I'd like to make this work on the client side as well, so I created a PasswordAttributeAdapter class

and in global.asax I added

If I have something like the following:
<asp:TextBox id="test" runat="sever"></asp:TextBox>
<asp:RequiredFieldValidator runat="server" ControlToValidate="test"
ErrorMessage="Required"></asp:RequiredFieldValidator>
<asp:Label runat="server" id="lblStatus"></asp:Label>
if in the code behind, I set the label to "You must enter a value if the textbox is empty" to validate it on the server side and this is fine, but if javascript is enabled, I don't want to show the client side validation and the server side label together. Is this something where I would just have to disable the client-side validators if javascript was enabled?

I'd like to implement ajax message box that will gather information from validators on a page when client-side validation fires. Like: I have left some text fields blank then press submit button and appropriate RequiredFieldValidators show messages. I would like my message box shows those messages too. I am looking for appropriate way to hook on validators JS event or something.

I have a scenario where i have 4 asp buttons , on click of each button there are 4 labels inside 4 seperate divs where each displays seperate data.
Now if i click second button i need to display second label text inside 2nd div and hide all other divs.How can i achieve this ?
OnClientClick event of each button calls displayAlternate() which displays repective div and hides other.
displayAlternate('second'); return false; --> if i do this server side event is not fired ...
If I return true div second label is not getting displayed..
How can I achieve functionality where all divs expect 2nd is hidden and i get server side event also..
Below is code.
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head runat="server">
<title></title>
</head><body>
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<script type="text/javascript">

I have an asp.net page that is using and update panel and am including some javascript via a {script src=abc.js} tag. I have tried loading my javascript using both $(document).ready and $(window).load. Both fire on the initial load but fail to fire on an update panel postback.
Is there anything I can wire up client side that would fire regardless of the update panel? I know I can inject script server side but I ideally want to do this all client side and wire up what ever is needed the first time around.

I have an asp.net application with basic CRUD functionality. On a page where i am capturing customer details i have several asp.net validators to required fields. I have attached a JS confirm box on the asp.net save button for the form. The trouble is that when the user leaves required fields unfilled and clicks the save button, the JS confirm box comes up, when the ok button is clicked, the save method is called successfully and only after this happened do the asp.net validators fire and display that required information has been left out.

I am a MVC newbie & am lost in various ways validation can be implemented in my application.
I created a custom model-level data annotation validator attribute, but am unable to display its error message in the view. Basically, I have let's say 5 properties in the Entity class Job (model-level custom attribute called UniqueKeywords defined on it):
1) LoginID: value comes in the URL
2) Title: Required property level attribute defined on it
3) CatID1, CatID2, CatID3 - 3 categoryIDs - these are dropdowns in the view with same list of keywords in all 3.
I want to mandate that the values picked by the user in all 3 category dropdowns should be different.
With reference to the code pasted below, here is the explanation of what happens:
When I submit the form without specifying a title or picking anything from any of the 3 category dropdowns, the validation occurs for the property level Required attribute as well as model level uniquekeywords attribute, but the error is displayed only next to the required field "Title". I can confirm that the custom validation also works by filling in some text in the Title field & then re-posting the form...this re-displays the view, but the error message "Category cannot be duplicated" is not displayed.
Only relevant code sections are pasted below:
My Entity class code:
