MVC :: Accessing The FormCollection From Base Controller
Jan 28, 2011
I'm overriding the OnActionExecuting method in a base Controller. When a form gets posted - anywhere, I want to check for a certain form element in this method. In any Controller method I can just include the FormCollection as one of the params in its signature, but if I try that with the OnActionExecuting method I get an error saying that there's no suitable method to override. How can I get past this?

In Short: Does any know a way from the base controller to get a list of actionFilters being applied to the current executing action?
The Long:I am using ASP.NET MVC 1.0 framework. I have a "RequireSSL" actionFilter that I've recreated for checking out, however, if someone leaves the checkout and goes back to the store I would like to forward them back to non-secure version of the site.It would be helpful in the base controller (I am using a custom base controller that inherits from the default Controller) to find out what actionFilters are being applied to the current action.I could include this into the global.asax.cs

In a recent post, I expressed a need to access the properties for the body using declarative syntax, see
Contentplaceholder for replacing attributes?
But, the syntax confuses the editor which is not acceptable.
My hypothesis for a workable solution is to make the change in code. To derive a class from System.Web.UI.Page with extended functionality. However, I want for the designer to be able to still use declarative syntax to set the body tag.
I do not want to have to change any code in my aspx web pages except that they derive from base I want to be able to set these properties using declarative syntax, merely by adding a tag in the derived page I'm not immediately sure how to go about doing this because it doesn't exactly fit the OOP paradigm and I'm not sure where the changes need to be made.
I can use a findcontrol in the base to see if the placeholder has been added. But, not sure exactly at what point in the page processing lifecycle that I can use this findcontrol. I need to set the body before it renders but also be able to grab something from the declarative code.

I built a base controller class inherits from Controller class to add some custom behavior to all controllers which will inherit from this base class.
My issue is when I try to access HTTPContext and Session objects in my custom base class, they are always null.
Am I doing something wrong or need missing something?
My custom base class definition:
public class ApplicationControllerBase : Controller
controllers classes definition:
public class HomeController : ApplicationControllerBase
using ASP.NET MVC 1, .NET 3.5.
UPDATE:
It seems the issue is I try to access HTTPContext in the constructor while HTTPContext is not ready yet, I tried it in the OnActionExecuted event handler and it works fine.
My question is what is the best place to access Session object in my custom controller class, that will guarantee executing my code with all controllers.

I'm using a simple base class for my controller that sets a piece of ViewData and makes use of the HttpContext. My understanding is that I need to put this code in Initialize() or OnActionExecuting(). I tried both, but believe Initialize() is what I want.
This works when running the app in VS just fine.
I wrote a unit test that calls the action and checks the ViewData for the expected value. When unit testing, neither method is called.

I'm accessing a Masterpage property from a regular page by doing the following:
[Code]....
I get the following error message:
Compiler Error Message: CS0246: The type or namespace name 'SecondMasterPage' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
My base class file is a file called BaseClass.cs in my App_Code directory. Other functions in there work without errors. Why?

Using MVC2 and C#:
I have textbox that is going to be used for searching. I would like to access the data entered in this textbox in the Controller, so I can filter results in my list. I've found a couple ways to accomplich this, but haven't been successful with any. The way that I like the most is using action method parameters. Here's what I have setup; can someone tell me where I am going wrong or supply a simple example:
I have a SearchDetails view that is basically a textbox:
[Code]....
Here's the search details method from the controller:
[Code]....
Here's the search results method from the controller (where I'm trying to access the data from the textbox):
[Code]....
I added a break on the line with 'test' string and 'txtInvestigator' is null. I've also tried to make these methods GET requests and try to access the textbox value directly with Request.QueryString. It seems like I'm close, but must be missing something fairly obvious. As an aside, I already have a List() method in the controller that lists all the items from a table in my DB so I am making a little progress!

In a webforms application, it's possible to add a server control to the markup and then access that control from the corresponding code behind file, but I'm not sure of the MVC equivalent of this functionality.
I've been looking at some tutorials, and it appears that in MVC applications, instead of using server controls, the examples are using HTML helpers, such as Html.TextBox, etc.
However, while I can find examples html helpers in views, I can't find any examples of how these helpers are accessed in the controllers, so I've declared an Html.TextBox in my view but don't know how to access its value in the controller when I hit enter.

I've got an .aspx page with this in it:
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Web.Mvc" %>
<%= AssetController.ScriptTag("/js/Community/CommunityWizard.js")%>
And I have an AssetController class:
Imports System.Web.Mvc
Public Class AssetController
Inherits Controller
Public Shared Function ScriptTag(ByVal src As String) As String
Return String.Format(
"<script type='text/javascript' src='/js.mvc?src={0}&{1}'></script>",
System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Server.UrlEncode(src),
New BuildVersion().ToString()
)
End Function
End Class
The project has a reference added to the 3.0.0.0 version of System.Web.Mvc assembly. When I try to view the page in a browser, I get a HTTP 500 with this message:
BC30007: Reference required to
assembly 'System.Web.Mvc,
Version=3.0.0.0,
Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'
containing the base class
'System.Web.Mvc.Controller'. Add one to your project.
What gives? I don't understand why I can use this controller everywhere in our ASP.NET Forms/MVC hybrid application, but not in a view. EDIT: In fact, when I type <% System.Web. into the .aspx view, Mvc doesn't even appear in Intellisense!

I have a custom basepage and a master page in my web application. In my master page, there are events that I run from each page in my web application. Instead of putting the code in each of my pages, I decided to create a base page that each web page will inherit from. Trouble is, I cannot get the base page to invoke the events on the master page.

I am new in asp .net.I am not able to undestand why we call base class method when we
override methods/events.Like automatically visual studio will put base.OnInit() if you are overriding OnInit.
protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e)
{
base.OnInit(e);
}
same is the case of Finalize. In derived we call base.Finalize() Is there any need of calling these base class methods ?

I have to implement User base security in my Web project using .Net3.5. Followings are some we need:
Roles can be Admin, Manage, Editor, Member etc User can have multiple roles Every roles has its own dynamic menus and restrictions/resources All menus and interface will populate dynamically from Database
I heard some where this kind of i.e user base security can be implemented using HashTable but I dont know how is it?
Today I came to know that for this kind of work Java people use Interceptor Design patterns. So, how could I do the same in asp.net C#?

UML and Patterns: An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis and Design and Iterative Development, that follows the UP(Unified Process). It uses a Grasp Controller pattern to interact with domain classes by some methods like NewSale(), AddNewItemToSale() and CloseSale. In windows form, I can instantiate a object of this class in the UI and then use its methods to perform the actions. This works well in Client apps, but when I use asp.net mvc, I cannot find a way to instantiate an object (one for each user) that was always visible for a Controller (MVC). I cannot insert as an attribute inside Controller because it always create a new one.

Ive got a scenario where a form is filled in and the action picks it up as a FormCollection. It then carries out validation on it and if it fails sends it back to the form again, however i cant seem to get it to re-populate the form.
If i do something like:
[Code]....
So it just looks for name in whatever is passed over... ideally i dont want to involve a model unless it has all validated fine, but if there is no other way around it can populate a model and do the validation on the model instead...

FYI I am using .NET 4.0 / MVC 3. In my controller, the following is my code:
[HttpPost]
[ValidateInput(false)]
public ViewResult Edit(ContentTemplateView contentTemplateView, FormCollection collection)
Everything works fine when I don't enter HTML, so I know the proper controller is being fired. Also, I have following set properly in my web.config files:
<httpRuntime requestValidationMode="2.0"/>
I only get this problem when I include the FormCollection (which is needed for this particular Controller). So what exactly am I doing wrong? [I have done what was proposed on the following questions, and they work as long as there is no FormCollection. None of them offer a solution with an included FormCollection] Why is ValidateInput(False) not working? Asp.Net MVC Input Validation still firing after being disabled ValidateInput Attribute Doesn't Seem To Work in ASP.NET MVC

My application writes custom attributes to input controls using Helper classes. And also we are loading the UserControl dynamically so we need to use FormCollection to get the posted values. Is there a way that we can access attribute values from FormCollection object.
Example:
<input type="text" name="textBox1" value="harsha" customAttr1 = "MyValue" />
My question is how can i access the value of customAttr1 from the above eg from inside the controller.

I want to know which fields were edited in a form in the Edit Action. I have a Log field in a table named "someTable" which I wish to add the change to, along with the Username of the current user. This is a simple implementation:
[Code]....
Can someone tell me where I am going wrong, because the getChangedAttributes function always returns an empty list (assuming because "backupTable" and "form" contain the same values? But shouldn't they be different?

I have a strongly typed view for my User edit action. When I press edit all the fields in Users model is filled with values from the DB. If I enter an invalid data for a particular field say email, then the view throws an error, but after that the email field contains data pulled from the DB and not the one which i entered previously.
I will explain to you in steps if my explanation is confusing.
1.Click the edit action.
2.A page displays with all fields in my User model.
3.Email field contains : johnson@company.com (pulled from the database)
4.I try to change the email to "johnson@company1" (This is an invalid email id)
5.The form does a post back and return an error saying that email id is invalid.
6.Email field contains : johnson@company.com (pulled from the database) and not "johnson@company1"
Is there a way to convert the FormCollection to an User model and send it back to the view?

In my ASP.NET MVC app I am rendering out a checkbox using the following code:
<%= Html.CheckBoxFor(i=>i.ReceiveRSVPNotifications) %>
Now I see that this renders both the checkbox input tag and a hidden input tag. The problem that I am having is when I try retrieve the value from the checkbox using the FormCollection:
FormValues["ReceiveRSVPNotifications"]
I get the value "true,false". When looking at the rendered out HTML I can see the following:
<input id="ReceiveRSVPNotifications" name="ReceiveRSVPNotifications" value="true" type="checkbox">
<input name="ReceiveRSVPNotifications" value="false" type="hidden">
So the FormValues collection seems to join these two values since they have the same name.

I am currently developing an application with the new ASP.NET MVC2 framework. Originally I started writing this application in the ASP.NET MVC1 and I'm basically just updating it to MVC2.My problem here is, that I don't really get the concept of the FormCollection object vs. the old Typed object. This is my current code:
[AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)]
public ActionResult Create(FormCollection collection)
{[code]....
What are the benefits of switching to FormCollection in MVC2 and more importantly - how is it used properly?

I have a basic form that renders data out to a form like so (from Northwind):
<% using (Html.BeginForm())
{ %>
<h2>Region Selection</h2> [code]....
In addition, I have a controller that is called when the form is posted back:
[AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)]
public ActionResult Index(FormCollection collection)
{ [code]...
The problem is that none of the data in the table is being captured in the FormCollection in the Post. The TextBoxes pass data as expected so I know the wireup is working.I read from some other posts that you need a value for the name property - but that did not work. Also, I read that you need to put the data inside a TextBox inside the TD. Instead of grasping at straws, does anyone know the best pattern to pass the data from a Table back into the FormCollection?
btw: I tried to copy/paste formatted test in from Word. No dice. Ugh.
