Web Forms :: Error Handling For Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object?

Aug 17, 2010

This might have been asked before but I did a quick search and found nothing.

Problem: I want to get the name of the object that has a value of nothing and the type of the object when the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object error" occurs. The type obviously can be Object or specific. I want this information so that I can log a better error message in the error handling module. The only real useful information currently that comes back from the Exception object on a try catch is the line number at which the error occurred which in most cases is adequate except when you have functions calling functions, all in one line.

Creation Of Custom Page With Custom Tags, With Event Handling?

Mar 8, 2010

I am trying out some code which enables me in creating a page with extension .asp2

The tags included will also be custom, something like:

[code]....

I have done the necessary changes so that ASP.NET identifies the extension. I have also kept a mapping of custom tags and asp.net/html tags with myself. With this I am able to render the page on browser. But how can we do event handling(usually done by page postbacks and code) in such a scenario?

Intercept Page Object Creation To Hook Up Events

Sep 11, 2010

I'm looking for a way to intercept the ASP.NET processing pipeline in such a way to be able to register event handlers to all events on the Page class. The reason is, I need to maintain a session-bound instance of a component that needs to be notified of all important Page events, starting from OnPreInit.

There's an arbitrary number of Page descendants in the application, which are not under my control. Hence I cannot use an approach like using a single custom descendant, that would notify the session-bound component, as a base class for all pages in the web application.

I don't think creating a custom IHttpHandler or IHttpModule implementation would solve the problem. Also note I cannot create a custom HttpApplication descendant.

Factory Method Pattern Clarification - Allow The Client To Delegates The Product Creation (Instance Creation) To The Subclass

Mar 29, 2010

My understanding of Factory Method Pattern is (Correct me if i am wrong) Factory Method Pattern "Factory Method allow the client to delegates the product creation (Instance Creation) to the subclass". There are two situation in which we can go for creating Factory Method pattern.

(i) When the client is restricted to the product (Instance) creation.

(ii) There are multiple products available.But a decision to be made which product instance need to be returned. If you want to create Abstract Method pattern

You need to have abstract product Concrete Product Factory Method to return the appropriate product.

public enum ORMChoice
{
L2SQL,
EFM,
LS,
Sonic
}
//Abstract Product
public interface IProduct
{
void ProductTaken();
}
//Concrete Product
public class LinqtoSql : IProduct
{
public void ProductTaken()
{
Console.WriteLine("OR Mapping Taken:LinqtoSql");
}
}
//concrete product
public class Subsonic : IProduct
{
public void ProductTaken()
{
Console.WriteLine("OR Mapping Taken:Subsonic");
}
}
//concrete product
public class EntityFramework : IProduct
{
public void ProductTaken()
{
Console.WriteLine("OR Mapping Taken:EntityFramework");
}
}
//concrete product
public class LightSpeed : IProduct
{
public void ProductTaken()
{
Console.WriteLine("OR Mapping Taken :LightSpeed");
}
}
public class Creator
{
//Factory Method
public IProduct ReturnORTool(ORMChoice choice)
{
switch (choice)
{
case ORMChoice.EFM:return new EntityFramework();
break;
case ORMChoice.L2SQL:return new LinqtoSql();
break;
case ORMChoice.LS:return new LightSpeed();
break;
case ORMChoice.Sonic:return new Subsonic();
break;
default: return null;
}
}
}
**Client**
Button_Click()
{
Creator c = new Creator();
IProduct p = c.ReturnORTool(ORMChoice.L2SQL);
p.ProductTaken();
}

Is my understanding of Factory Method is correct?

Handling Timeouts In A Website SQLCommand Object And C#?

May 14, 2010

I'm using visual studio 2008 and sql server 2005 and everything is working just fine under normal use. However if a user is on a page for a while several minutes with no activity then clicks a button on occassion the site throws the following exception ...

Procedure or Function "sp_name" parameter '@SomeParameterName', which was not supplied

I'm also encountering this error in Visual Studio while debugging the application, in otherwords run the site from visual studio then make some change to the html in VS save the changes and refresh the page.

The error is not consistent nor is the time the page has to stay idle in order for it to occur....

The current sql command object timeout is 30 secs and the website timeout is 30 minutes.

Architecture :: Handling Collections Related To An Object Not Yet Persisted

Nov 15, 2010

how do you treat situations where there is the need of storing collections of object belonging to an object not persisted on db (not yet). For example , suppose we have a web application for submitting orders. The user click on 'Create new order" , then insert order's data , choose items from a catalog and add them to the order. Finally he "submit" the order. I can see two different way to persiste data :

a) create on db an empty order instance when user click on "create new order" , so that the orderitems collection could be directly associated (saved) with that instance in the db.

b) keep all data in memory and finally save order and orderitem.

The b option imply storing (in session?) the orderitems collection till submit. Are there, probably, other solutions. Which are best practices in these situation?

Do webstandards allows that?

MVC :: Handling Form Controls After Ajax.BeginForm Submission?

Oct 12, 2010

Currently I have a comments section integrated into a blog I am writing. The comments are Ajaxified, when you post a comment the comment list auto updates with the comment you just added. Everything is working great but I would like to do some cleanup after a comment is successfully posted. Specifically I would like to disable the textarea and submit button which I would have no issues doing through javascript by using the AjaxOption OnComplete parameter. To avoid double posts or just plain abuse. I know I will need other safegaurds as well but this is my first step. The thing is Ajax.BeginForm does not give the form an id or name so I can not reference the form in javascript. Is there a workaround here? Can I disable these form controls from the controller?

Here is my code.

DataSource Controls :: Cannot Access A Disposed Object When Handling Foreign Key Relations?

May 15, 2010

i am currently working on an asp.net mvc 2 web app using LinqToSQL. I would like to handle a scenario where a user comes form a country and for this i have set the users - countries db relationship and in my user model i have a CountryId property.

I would like to display the country name on my users display view, so i tried fetching the country name like this: User.Country.Name, but an exception occurs that i cannot access a disposed object. I understand that this is caused by the way i handle my users repository and service.

This the repository users code:

[Code]....

This is the service users code (the repository is not class level property, but a local one that gets dipsosed immediately after calling it):

[Code]....

So, how could i handle such a scenario, where i would like the Country model to be also fetched in order to use it later? Should i convert the repository model a class level proprty in order not to get disposed?

Web Forms :: How To Test Exception Handling And Logging Locally For Email Form

Aug 19, 2010

I have a form that's used to submit emails for a project. This uses the SMTP Client class and is currently delivering the emails to a local directory , for now.

There is some logic that checks to see if a mailbox is busy or unavailable. A message is displayed for the appropriate situation. There is also some logging and exception handling.

I want to know if there is a way to test this logic, logging and exception handling while this app is local. I don't know if there is a SMTP Status Code that's returned since this is being done locally and not with a real smtp server.

Is there a way to test this locally? Can these values be set manually in the code as a test?

How To Use Data Caching With Sql Dependency

We store the location information in a table. Numbers of records are over four thousand. This table structure is self-recursive. In our web project, we use dropdownlist control to populate all these locations. We got performance slow problem. So googling about Caching, we consider to use Data Caching with Sql Dependency. However, not found yet a full-covered sample in .NET 2.0 and SQL Server 2005 or 2008.

C# : Dependency Injection And Roles?

Jul 20, 2010

I have a page using an injected BLL service: a simple service returning a set of objects with a function like this:

public IMyService { List<Foo> All(); }

There is a default implementation for normal users.Now, i need that users in administrative role can view more objects, with another implementation of the service.Where can i configure my page to use the second implementation?

My first solution is to put the dependency to the IUnityContainer in the page, and use it to resolve the dependency:

[Dependency]
public IUnityContainer Container { get; set;}

Page_Init(..) [code].....

it's a ServiceLocator and it's neither scalable neither testable.

C# - .NET Module Dependency Injection?

Jan 3, 2011

During the design of a new generic authentication framework for some of our products, I have come across an architectural issue I cannot seem to find a good solution for.I have tried to simplify the problem in order to easily explain it.

The library has two classes:

Manager Is responsible for storing currently authenticated users.Module It is the responsibility for the module to validate each request according to security policies. The Module must ask the manager to determine whether a user is currently authenticated.

Now the manager is supplied an implementation of an interface which allows the manager to load users from a repository. The specific implementation is not contained in this library. Because of this, I cannot directly instantiate an instance of the repository within the library.

I have no way of modifying properties or supplying arguments for the module constructor. So my question is this, how can I give the module a reference to an instance of the Manager?

namespace Demo
{
public interface IRepository

MVC :: Dependency Inversion Between Layers?

Nov 1, 2010

Split off from http://forums.asp.net/t/1618613.aspx

I would like to get your advise on Dependency Inversion..Should i include it as a layer between Business Layer and Repository Layer?

I think its really great when different team members work on DAL n BAL etc or when your database will be changed in future. It actually removes the dependency of the Data provider but over the expense of additional coding overhead. My question is , is it really worth it? If i suggest this layer to my PM and give him the above two reasons then i dnt think he will accept it since most of the time each developer works on his DAL/BAL's, and Change in DB wud be the least of his concerns.

RAD in every layer..

I mean if there are any auto generation tools available for generating repositories etc.I read about MVCContrib Grid and i think its a good option to use for Grid.

If i use Spark ViewEngine then can i still use T4 templates to auto create custom views by customizing templates?
