AJAX :: Returning DataSet / Datatable From Webmethod To Javascript
Sep 16, 2010I have a simple web method written in the code-behind (not a separate asmx) of a test aspx page.
All it does is return a DataTable(or DataSet) both are failing, gives a blank 500 error saying "There was an error processing the request"
If I switch the return variable type to String, it works fine
I think my issue has to do with the version of the System.Web.Extensions, is that the assembly that actually contains the JSON communication implementation?
I've read all kinds of tutorials about how it should be possible to return the DataTable to javascript and then read the properties with javascript syntax.
For some reason it isn't working for me.
My web extensions is imported through my web.config with the following version

Dec 28, 2010UML and Patterns: An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis and Design and Iterative Development, that follows the UP(Unified Process). It uses a Grasp Controller pattern to interact with domain classes by some methods like NewSale(), AddNewItemToSale() and CloseSale. In windows form, I can instantiate a object of this class in the UI and then use its methods to perform the actions. This works well in Client apps, but when I use asp.net mvc, I cannot find a way to instantiate an object (one for each user) that was always visible for a Controller (MVC). I cannot insert as an attribute inside Controller because it always create a new one.

Mar 17, 2011may I ask one seemingly simple question - I have a Javascript function that loops through my checkboxes(they're plain HTML checkboxes, not using the helper methods), and for every checked one it's adding its value to an array. So now, how do I get this array in my controller so that I can assign its values to the fields, i.e. object's properties?
This is my checkbox code:

Now, this langID should be assigned every checked checkbox's value, so I guess I'm missing a loop here too, it should go until some border that's gotten from the client script or something, but my bigger problem is how to retrieve the posted values from the javascript, something like PHP's POST["array"]...?
This Request.Form works fine when just one checkbox is checked, but now I need it to work with several checked..
Javascript - Passing JSON To Controller Action

Problem is if I enter one row in the table "ingredients" but I am getting 2 rows in the resulting pass to controller action after seralising into my C# object. But the second object is null? I checked the javascript and the variable "cnt" is 1 not 2. Why would that be?

"Add As Link" For JavaScript Files Returning 404 In Debug?
Nov 12, 2010Using a Visual Studio 2010 ASP.net web application, I have several projects that share some JavaScript/css files. The most logical way for them to share these files is to place the files in a single folder and each project has them included with the "Add as Link" option. However, if I add the files this way when I'm debugging using either the Visual Studio Development server or debugging using a local IIS web server all requests for these files return 404 Not Found errors. If I publish the site then the files are copied but that obviously doesn't with debugging.

Aug 16, 2010I have a simple model where a Person has Gifts. I have a view which is a list of Gifts belonging to one Person.
My problem is with the Create action for a new Gift. I want it to default to the PersonID that we are already viewing the list of Gifts for. I tried simply passing the last PersonID (they are all the same)
Html.ActionLink("Create New", "Create", new { id = Model.Last().PersonID }) which works fine if there is already at least one Gift for that person but if this is the first Gift I don't have a value.
My Gift List controller knows the PersonID I want to pass but the view doesn't.
How do I pass this PersonID from my Gift List controller to my Gift Create controller via the Gift List view? Or is there a better way to do this?

How can I persist values from controller to controller?
Should I use Session? TempData?
I am using Structure Map for IOC.
Maybe I could have a class that contains a Property for each Session Value that I use in my application and inject it on the controllers that need session?

UserViewModel has a property of type DepartmentListModel .
Now on user/create action I need to populate DepartmentListModel by calling DepartmentController's list action. List action returns populated DepartmentListViewModel.
From UserController how do I set DepartmentListModel ?

Mar 11, 2010Say I have several Areas that are baed on user roles.Differnet roles have different functionality, but also have some "shared" functionality like say "Payments"Now, I created a PaymentController (and it's views for listing, creating messages) in Shared (not an area) and it works fine.
Would it be possible (and how?) to create a PaymentsController class in one of the Areas, have that inherit the PaymentController Class in Shared?
If I can do this, I can successfully share common functionality across areas, and at the same time extend the derived controller to include some 'area specific' functionality to common shared controllers. (Such as the "REturn to xxxx" text and route of the returnurl, which are a bit more complicated than I just made it sound)

Jan 10, 2011I have a simple asp.net form that has a textbox that collects phonenumbers to send SMS messages. If I bypass the form and hardcode the numbers using the following format:
"2133211234",#1233211234"
the code works fine. However when i try to use this same format using my form, the sms will ONLY send to the first number. I have a feeling i'm missing out on some property on my form that will accept all of the values. how how i can add some lines of code that will allow users to enter numbers like this:
3123211234,4123212344 and have it converted to the format above when the number is submitted?
