Web Forms :: Use Some Javascript Code To Make AJAX Calls To Different Handlers?

May 12, 2010

I am currently building an asp.net webforms application in ASP.NET C# using Visual studio 2008 and the Framework .NET 3.5.In my application main page, I use some javascript code to make AJAX calls to different handlers (.ashx files) in order to get some information. In this handlers définition (in the CodeBehind), I use the Oracle provider for .NET (Oracle.DataAccess.Client) to get the requested information from an Oracle database. The thing is, when I make a first call to one of these handlers, everything works just fine, but when the main page try to repeat the call in order to update the information requested, I encounter a problem. In fact, it appears that the different Oracle SQL request results that were made during the first call are still in memory and that the requests are not repeated correctly in order to obtain the updated information from the database. The application keeps the first results and this is these results that are sent back to the main page once again.I don't know how to force the handler to obtain new results and work with it instead of working with the previous results. In the handlers définition, the IsReusable methods are all set to false.I have called the Dispose() méthods of every Oracle object at the hand of the handlers définition and then the System.GC.Collect() méthod to force Garbage Collection. But this does not seem to be sufficient to be sure that nothing is kept in memory.

AJAX :: Asynchronous Web Services, JQuery Or .NET (BeginInvoke) Calls?

Sep 24, 2010

I have been moving my application to be more AJAX-based. Currently I have a web service call where I use jQuery to gather some textbox (string) and checkbox (boolean) results and pass it to a web service. Everything works really well, the response time is super quick. The only downside that I can see to this is

1) you need to use jQuery, which will add to the user's download time - this doesn't really affect my application too much because I am using jQuery throughout the site

2) users can see the code and potentially try to hack the web service because they know where it is

I am most concerned with #2. I've been reading a lot about .NET web service calls, using IAsyncResult,

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2e08f6yc.aspx, and I am beginning to understand the 4 methods available in this article. However, is there extra bloat using this way compared to the jQuery web service call?If there isn't that much bloat or lag time using this method, I'd like to convert my application. Which one of these 4 methods is best in a scenario where I am just returning a small string value? The 4 methods in the article are to wait for EndInvoke itself, which from what I read is not recommended because this may block the first thread; and this should not be used on a service that affects the UI.Create a WaitHandle to wait for the 'OK' before EndInvoke is called Poll the IAsyncResult for .IsCompleted, using sleep() and a Do While until IAsyncResult.IsCompleted is true, then call EndInvoke Pass a delegate function to BeginInvoke to be called once the operation is complete.

Multiple Webservice Calls / Some Of Its Calls Are Duplicated (with Difference Of Milliseconds)

May 10, 2010

I have a webservice (ASP.NET) deployed on a webfarm. A client application consumes it on daily basis. The problem is that some of its calls are duplicated (with difference of milliseconds). For example I have a function Foo(string a,string b). The client app calls this webmethod as Foo('test1','test2') once but my log shows that it is being called twice or sometimes 3 or 4 times randomly. Is this anything wrong with the webfarm or the code? Note that the webmethod has simple straighfarward insert and update statements.

How To Save And Retrieve Cookies Using Ajax Webservice Calls

Jan 26, 2010

I have web app which stores certain things on a page in a cookie when the page posts back in case the user doesn't finish what they're doing and come back later. But now I must do a javascript time-out and actively save the info to the cookie rather than wait for the user to postback. All my cookie code is on server side where I use Response and Request objects to read and write cookies and I want to leverage that. So I would like to just use ajax calls to a webservice. Is there a way for me to access Request and Response objects and read and write cookies to the browser via those objects during a webservice call? Or should I just go with javascript?

EDIT: Sorry i wanted to specify that I would like to use jquery-ajax.

How To Make Multiple But Separate AJAX Calls In JQuery

I am trying to make 2 separate AJAX calls using buttons. What I want to happen is: when Button1 is clicked ProductsTable shows data from the webservice; when Button2 is clicked OthersTable shows its own data from the webservice. But right now, when either button is clicked, nothing shows up. I know the code works if there's only one of them and it's not wrapped around a .click function.

No error messages. ASP.NET 4.0, JQuery 1.4.4. Not using ScriptManager. Not using UpdatePanels.

How To Make Calls To A WCF Service With Jquery Ajax From An SSL- Secured Page

Jun 6, 2010

I have a WCF service returning JSON to jQuery ajax calls and presenting the results on an ASPX page. When the page is NOT under SSL, the ajax calls work perfectly. When the page IS under SSL, the calls fail. I understand that this behavior must be due to the Same Origin Policy (SOP).

So, how do I setup my WCF service to accept calls from an SSL-secured page? Does the WCF service also need to be secured? If so, how do I do this?

Now, the issue is that the client is really authenticated only in the first attempt(First time I execute the code in VS). Further attempts succeed even if the code to assign credentials is commented or even after providing wrong user id/ password. I ensured that the server is hit each time(Just to make it clear that it not just because of client side caching). Is this the behavior of Basic authentication/credential cache. I would prefer the client be authenticated each time he hits the server.

AJAX :: How To Use CDN For MicrosoftAjax.js With .NET 4 & Control Toolkit 40412

Nov 5, 2010

Looks like there aren't a lot of users using the Ajax Control Toolkit 40412 and the Microsoft Microsoft Ajax CDN because I can't find any information on how to get the MicrosoftAjax.js and MicrosoftAjaxWebForms.js files to be linked to the CDN.

First issue:Ajax Control Toolkit 40412 seems to be using its own customized version of MicrosoftAjax.js and MicrosoftAjaxWebForms.js. Toolkit's version

is 4.1.40412.2, while the version that come with ASP.NET Ajax 4 is 4.0.30205.0. By default when using the toolkit the version is swapped to the toolkit's version. While the ASP.NET Ajax 4 version is hosted on the CDN (http://www.asp.net/ajaxlibrary/CDNAjax4.ashx)
the version with the Toolkit is not (http://www.asp.net/ajaxlibrary/CDNACT40412.ashx), which doesn't make any sense because all the other files are hosted. Therefore, a CDN version of MicrosoftAjax.js and MicrosoftAjaxWebForms.js is UNAVAILABLE when using the Ajax Control Toolkit 40412.

Second Issue:Why not use the ASP.NET Ajax 4 version of the the MicrosoftAjax.js, after all its version 4. The version can be swapped out by adding a Script Resource Mapping to the Application_Start event in the Global.asax.cs.

void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
ScriptManager.ScriptResourceMapping.AddDefinition("MicrosoftAjax.js", new ScriptResourceDefinition
{
Path = "~/Scripts/MicrosoftAjax.js", [code]....

However, when the version is changed to the ASP.NET Ajax 4 version the following error is given:

"AjaxControlToolkit requires ASP.NET Ajax 4.0 scripts. Ensure the correct version of the scripts are referenced. If you are using an ASP.NET ScriptManager, switch to the ToolkitScriptManager in AjaxControlToolkit.dll."

It doesn't matter if you are using the ToolkitScriptManager or ScriptManager you will always get this error when not using the version of
MicrosoftAjax.js that comes with the AjaxControlToolkit. So how can one use the Microsoft Ajax CDN for the MicrosoftAjax.js and MicrosoftAjaxWebForms.js with ASP.NET Ajax 4 & Ajax Control Toolkit 40412?

One other note. The new attribute EnableCdn="true" is of course rendered completely useless when using the Ajax Control Toolkit because the idea is that the MicrosoftAjax.js and MicrosoftAjaxWebForms.js files would then be linked by references to the CDN. This does not happen with the Toolkit because as described the Toolkit replaces the those files with its own. I was very surprised to find out that all my excitement about having CDN support was made void when I included the Toolkit in my project.

Will Transactionscope Work Over Multiple Calls To Different Services

I have a block of code which calls two services, MessageService and UserService. These both in term call their appropriate repositories and make the amendments to the db. Each repository declares it's own instance of the repository so I'm thinking this will escalate the following code to DTC . The code is called from the AccountService, is this going to work at this level? And also is it bad practise to declare the DataContext at the top of every repository or should I pass the object around somehow?

AJAX :: ASPX WebMethod Not Running The WebService Webmethod Returning The Page?

May 19, 2010

I have a service that works great on my development box. It uses JQuery to hit my web service, and then the JSON results are sent back.

The web service is located on our basePage.cs. We didn't want to put out an external WebService for this. Our on beta box something different is happening.

The web page seems to be trying to call the web method correctly - the JSON data is being sent... but the server doesn't seem to know it's a webmethod. here's my service function (it's in our basepage.cs which inherits from Page).

Web Forms :: One Page Returning Different Content Types - Not Working In IE?

Jan 21, 2010

I have one page that checks the content type then either returns an XML or a Plain Text page.

On IE6 (Unfortunately still the corporate standard) viewing XML content works but when I try and view the Plain Text content it reports: The XML page cannot be displayed. Invalid at the top level of the document. Error processing resource.

On Firefox it works perfectly, displaying an XML document for XML content and a plain text document otherwise.

Is this a bug with IE6 caching the content type? The URL is the same but the query string is different for different entries.

Here is the code that generates the output. I have single stepped it and it goes down the Plain Text leg when I expect it to, but IE still reports the XML error:

How To Configure A WCF Service That Calls Other Services Behind A Load Balancer

Sep 3, 2010

I haven't deployed behind a load balancer before. My customer has a WCF service built and tested on servers using a service model configuration that is relatively straightforward. It provides a service to return an image of a map for another application. To get the map, it calls other services.

The service was built in Visual Studio 2010 targeting the 3.5 framework. The customer is using IIS 7.5 and an F5 load balancer. When moving to the production server, the Web.config was changed to add the load balancer behavior and specify the endpoint to show the physical and logical address of the service:

[Code].....

There was a problem when the service was deployed to a server behind the load balancer. When I try to call the service from WCFStorm or WebServiceStudio I get the message "The provided URI scheme 'https' is invalid; expected 'http'.

The endpoints for the service itself look right to me. However in the development and testing versions of the config, the client section uses http instead of http, while on the production servers it uses the load balancer's https address. This seems like it should be obvious, but we're missing it.

Are There Any Transactions Around Multiple Webservice Calls

Mar 31, 2011

Are there any transactions around multiple webservice calls.Let me start with a commonly used example -- the travel agency. A customer intends to create a travel plan through an online travel agency. To do this, the online travel application calls the following three Web services:

-Air ticket booking
-Hotel reservation
-Taxi reservation

These three services are available from three separate vendors. If any one of these three services fails, the customer does not wish to proceed with the transaction (again, either all three services must succeed or none at all).My language programming is Asp.net c#.

Are CRC's Required For Critical Webservice Calls

Dec 1, 2010

I have data that is stored on a local machine and periodically replicated using webservices. This data is critical to the application of this program and is along the lines of business transactions.

TransactionHeader JOIN TransactionDetail

So forth.

Should I be using some type of CRC checking when sending the data to the webservice or is this handled by the TCP protocol itself sufficiently?

EDIT: Just to be clear the data isnt deleted from the client until the server acknowledges receipt and I use strongly typed parameters in my webservice but I am more thinking about "mangled" data (although in all cases but string it should theoretically fail datatype casting).
