MVC :: Passing SQL 'recordset' To A View Instead Of Using Linq?

Aug 1, 2010

new to asp.net and mvc, sorry if the question sounds dumb. I currently have a model (a Linq type) that get data from a table. I use this model to do a Linq qery and display all records in a listing table.I would like to do exactly the same but using a SQL command/query rather than Linq as I'm much more confortable with "standart" SQL. I now need to join tables and return specific columns with custom names as some columns have the same name in the join of my query.If you have another idea (create a stored procedure to be in control of the SQL and then use Linq to call it, for example), I'm open to sugestions.In the view, I loop all records doing: foreach (var item in Model) {}Not sure if this could be important o note

MVC :: - View - Passing Multiple Objects To The View And Selecting Data From The Lists?

May 17, 2010

I have a view which takes two objects: booking and list of reasons for canceling that booking.I have two classes: clsBooking, clsBookingCancelationReason I can read both objects in my view - no problems there. After I read the objects, I display the booking details and I generate a list of cancelation reasons in the following way:

The code above generates a list of cancelation reasons.How do I pick up the selected ReasonId from the list?
I need to generate a link that will contain the bookingId and the selected reason for canceling the booking.I can get the bookingId out easily since it's stored in the Model...but how do I go about the selected ReasonId?

C# - Passing LINQ DataRow Reference In GridView's ItemTemplate

Mar 25, 2010

SOLVED. Code has been edited to reflect solution. Given the following GridView:

<asp:GridView runat="server" ID="GridView1" AutoGenerateColumns="false" DataKeyNames="UniqueID"
OnSelectedIndexChanging="GridView1_SelectedIndexChanging" >
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField HeaderText="Remarks" DataField="Remarks" />
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Listing">
<ItemTemplate>
<%# ShowListingTitle( Container.DataItem ) %>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
<asp:BoundField HeaderText="Amount" DataField="Amount" DataFormatString="{0:C}" />
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>

which refers to the following code-behind method:

protected String ShowListingTitle( object /* was DataRow */ row )
{
Listing listing = ( Listing ) row;
return NicelyFormattedString( listing.field1, listing.field2, ... );
}

The cast from DataRow to Listing was failing (cannot convert from DataRow to Listing) I'm certain the problem lies in what I'm passing from within the ItemTemplate, which is simply not the right reference to the current record from the LINQ to SQL data set that I've created, which looks like this:

private void PopulateGrid()
{
using ( MyDataContext context = new MyDataContext() )
{
IQueryable < Listing > listings = from l in context.Listings where l.AccountID == myAccountID select l;
GridView1.DataSource = listings;
GridView1.DataBind();
}
}

DataSource Controls :: Passing Results / Parameters In LINQ

Jan 20, 2010

im new to linq and im having lots of trouble creating complex queries.. My problem mainly is that i am using Linq as a BLL.

i created a dbml (with namespace called DAL) file with 2 tables with a one to many relation. Pop and City. There is a forgien key in pop that points to a city. I also created a class called Pop that inhertis DAL.Pop. Now in my ASPX page, i want to call a function in the Pop class that would retrieve some Pop according to its ID, but i need the city name as well.. Ive been going around this in circles for days. I dont know how to write the Linq syntax and i dont understandd how my function's signature should be like.. I want to recieve a table that i can bind to a Gridview and preferable, specify which coloumns to bind.

DataSource Controls :: Using LINQ Passing The Name Of The Stored Procedure Dynamically?

Feb 23, 2010

I have an application where depending on what the user selects run a different stored procedure.

I am using LINQ and am passing the stored procedure name into a sub that will run the stored procedure and return values that I am loading into a DDL.

For example I want to pass the procedure name "GetProducts_Hats" to the sub and not hardcode it.

Protected Sub LoadParamDropDowns(
ByVal SqlObjToExec
As
String )

I am passing the storedprocedure name in parameter SqlObjToExec

so instead of

values = mydb.GetProducts_Hats

I want to code it to be a variable

values = mydb.SqlObjToExec

But the above code does not work.

How To Print A Recordset From Webpage

Feb 3, 2010

I have created an asp.net web page that allows one to query a SQL Database and returns a recordset in a bound gridview. My question is how can I provide a means for the authorized webpage user to print the recordset out, in like a cvs text file? I need to be able to allow her to choose her printer, like in a regular print dialog box, and then to print the whole recordset, not just the page she's on.

What Are Classic Ado's Recordset Replacements

Mar 15, 2011

I've tried to do my homework on this...

I'm migrating a site from classic asp to asp.net 4.0

Before I rework all the code, I wanted to get clarification that the way i think my database code should be updated is fairly correct. (I'm using SQLClient objects)

First, when old code would use forward only recordsets or access single record/value, I'm fairly sure i'd use SqlCommand and SqlDataReader. That is pretty straightforward.

Now, when my old code navigates a recordset (movePrevious, find, etc.)... I believe the way to go is with SqlDataAdapter and DataTable to retrieve the data and DataView to filter/find/navigate the data.

I'n looking to do a quick migration... i don't want to get too bogged down in the new entity framework... so - just trying to stick with similar objects/logic.

I know this is one of those questions that doesn't really have a right/wrong answer... and I think that is part of my problem in finding an answer - there are so many.

ADO.NET :: What Is Best To Use In VB NET In Place Of The VB6 Adodb.recordset

Dec 12, 2010

I gather from what I have read that the VB6 adodb.recordset is not the best way to work with database tables in VB NET

I have a program created in VB6 that I would like to upgrade or re-write in VB NET

What I am finding difficult to understand or find is the answer to what I use in place of the VB6 adodb.recordset

I have found the code to make DATASET and OleDbDataAdapter and can open an Access or SQL table

But what I do not find or follow is how you move through the rows of a table

With the adodb.recordset you could Do While Not EOF and MoveNext

What is the equivalent to that in VB NET without using adodb.recordset?

Equivalent Of RecordSet.MoveNext While Not EOF In ASP

Jun 22, 2010

I'm using a DataReader to display informations stored in a table. I created Two button to go to next record and to go back. In VB6 I used this code :

While Not Recordset1.EOF
Recordset1.MoveNext
End While

In ASP.NET I didn't find a way to do like it, because DataReader hasn't the EOF property.

EDIT :
While Not Recordset1.BOF
Recordset1.MovePrevious
End While

How can I convert this last code (VB6) to ASP.NET?

MVC :: Passing A Model To A View?

Nov 10, 2010

In my controller I UpdateModel(model). That works. I'm getting the model from the view.I save the fields of the model to a business entity and save the entity through a business layer to my database. The business layer returns a unique record id which I store in my model. Then I pass the model to the View.

return View(model);

After the View loads the Model in the View has not been updated. The unique record id has not been changed. I have been at this for four hours and I'm not getting anywhere. I have been trying to convert a windows forms project to MVC2 for six weeks and it just gets more and more frustrating. None of the tutorials on the MS site or the Microsoft book I have answer any of my questions.

MVC :: Passing Data From One View To Other?

Jun 3, 2010

I have a create page which is strongly typed. And when i call this through the create action method[HTTPGET] i pass some data through ViewData.

For ex

I have Event model which has Event.ID and Event.Name and my ViewData["EventData"]=Event which i pass to create page.

Now in create view which is also strongly typed to model Product where Product has Product.Name,Product.Price,Product.EventID.

for user he can only enter values for Product.Name and Product.Price and submit.

Next Create action[HTTPPOST] takes control and does the saving process.

Here is the problem the model Product which Create action[HTTPPOST] receives has Product.EventID =null, but it should be set(Event.Id) to the value which i sent to create view as ViewData[EventData]. But i dont know how to do this.

MVC - Passing Grouped Data Into A View?

Jan 7, 2010

I've got a LINQ to SQL object, and I want to group the selected data and then pass it into a view. What's the correct way of doing this? I'm sure I need to group the data when I select it rather than grouping it in the view, as this will result in about 200 rather 50000 rows I need to pass into my view. Are there any good examples of this online that anyone has seen?

MVC :: Passing Data From Controller To View

Nov 16, 2010

I have setup an httppost that sends a string into my controller, searches for some results using linq, and then sends the results to a view. In debug stepping through the code I can see the data that I am looking for being passed into the return view statement, but the page just appears to refresh (it doesn't render the view as expected with the result). why my controller fails to redender the view? (note: I didn't include the view because I can send a ToList() to it without an issue. For example, return View(_entities.Persons.ToList());

[HttpPost]
public ActionResult RenderSearch(string usersearchtext)
{
if (usersearchtext != null)
{
var search_results = from s in _entities.Persons
where s.Description.Contains(usersearchtext)
select s;
return View("SearchResult", search_results.ToList());
}
else
{
throw new NotImplementedException();
}
}

MVC :: Passing A Collection Of Objects To The View?

Apr 16, 2010

I'm trying to pass a list of items from a LINQ query to a View, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to resolve a type issue. Here's the error:

The model item passed into the dictionary is of type 'System.Data.Linq.DataQuery`1[Project.Models.Diagnostic]' but this dictionary requires a model item of type 'Project.Models.Diagnostic'.

The issue seems to originate with this code from my Controller:

[Code]....

I tried changing the IQueryable<Diagnostic> to var and got the same error. Also played around with something like:

[Code]....

But then VS2008 says that diagnostics could never be null, and that's may not the best (or even valid) way to do it.
