Is there a way to create templates in an MVC 2 View User Control much like the ability of a Web User Control? or should I just use a Web User Control? With MVC 2, should Web User Controls be avoided?

View 7 Repliesi currently work on an asp.net mvc 2 project and noticed that inside an asp.net mvc view page i can get the user name authenticated via User.Identity.Name, but if i try to use the DsiplayFor method in order to display my model from a view user control, it just does not exist. Could i pass this parameter to my model using additional ViewData parameter that comes with DisplayFor html extension?

I have a task to develop web application for medical center .the requirment is to enable each doctor to make his own template to add patient data.
View 1 RepliesI find the repetition of sets of controls for each of the EditItemTemplate, InsertItemTemplate, and ItemTemplate templates of a FormView to be tedious and risky, in terms duplicating layout and code etc. I would much rather create a xxxDetails user control, and use this in each template, cutting layout and code location down to one location.
However, this introduces several complexities for data binding scenarios. Are there any extablished patterns or practice guides for using user controls in these scenarios?

I'm trying to use the same aspx page for both of them ,(logon & register ) for this perpas I have created a prtial view from the register controller and load it into the logon page, how ever when the user just click without any data in any field , I'm getting this error ,

i can embed this in a page (aspx) but i is not working in usercontrol (ascx). when i use this inside usercontrol, the designer file (.ascx.designer.cs) itself not getting generated.
getting the following error:

Update: sometimes it works! i created couple of controls. it works in some place and it doesnot works in someother place.
I am creating a web user control for a simple poll. I am currently registering it on the page and then referencing it via tagprefix.
The form for the poll is in basic html (no server controls) and is in the front-end of the web control. How can I change the look of the user control depending on the settings passed into it? Is this possible without using server controls?

I am tring to add a user control to do a search. this user control is to be used on the home page and for example /category-page.where do I write the code for data capturing. is there a way to force the user control to submit to a HomeController or the controller I want?

View 1 RepliesI am dynamically loading user controls into my main page on button event.The user control has a textbox and a gridview When i enter data in textbox , the autopostback event fires and loads data into the gridview. when i load another instance of user control and do any post back the gridview data is not persisting.Until and unless I bind the data, gridview is not having any data after postback.This is creating issue when I al updating a row in gridview as data is not persisting after postback.

The control implementation must render each row using the template specified in RowTemplate passing the corresponding object in the DataSource list, so that, if I have a property called Name in the passed object, it would be accessible with a Eval("Name").

I was opting to use the updatepanel (conditionally) for this thing, but I guess it's going to get kinda slow in production environment (Each time about 20 rows will be visible). I don't think I understand fully how ASP.NET does inheritance of controls.I have a user control, ucBase, which has an asp.net label in the ascx file. Code behind references the label and it works fine during run time if the control is not a parent for another user parent.
If I have another user control, ucChild, inheriting from ucBase, the label in ucBase's code is always null. ucChild has no controls in its ascx fileThe server controls (like the label) needs to be declared in the ascx file and not created programmatically.What needs to be done for ucBase to see its own controls when it's a parent user control?
I want to show a grid view Control that is initially displayed to allow the user to enter multiple records. This grid view will not be tied to a database nor will it need to save the data that is enter into the GridView Control directly to a database.
View 3 RepliesThis is driving me nutty... I have a gridview on a page. On the same page is a web user control with several public properties. Using the gridview's selectedindexchanging event, I try to set the user control property, but it's always null. Like this:

If I write the grdPhysicians.SelectedValue to the page, I can see it's there. It just won't pass to the web user control.What I'm trying to do is have a master record form with child records in a web user control and just pass the selected record id into it.

I have a FormView control in an ASP.NET page. I use the InsertItemTemplate and EditItemTemplate to provide data manipulation functionality, and it is working very well. I would like to allow the user to "Copy to new" from an existing item. In other words, I want the user to be able to display an item as if they are going to edit it, then, if they click a "Copy to new" button, it will load the information from that item into an "Insert" form so they could just change the bits of data that they want, and insert the new item.
The data objects we are dealing with are fairly large so, providing this functionality will save the user a lot of data entry misery.
I have experimented with copying the existing EditItemTemplate controls in the Copy button's click event, storing them, and writing them to the new InsertItemTemplate controls, once the form is reloaded (in the Page_PreRender event). But this is pretty ugly stuff. There has to be a better/simpler way.
