MVC :: Validation Using MVC2, EF4 Anda MetadataTypes?

Oct 19, 2010

I am using MVC 2 with Entity Framework 4 models and MetadataType classes to create annotations that do not vanish everytime my model is generated... I followed Scott's article to create that.It worked fine for simple classes, but when I got to a more complex one, with regular expression and range validations on doubles, it seemed to simply ignore the validation annotations altogether.

JQuery Validation With Data Annotations In MVC2?

Apr 8, 2010

I am trying to make some sense of this validation stuff in MVC2. I followed various walkthroughs, all them for betas/rcs... and I cant' get anythign to happen. Note: THIS JQUERY - NOT THE MS AJAX STUFF!I have referenced MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidation.js which i got got the mvc2 futures lib.

My model is:

[Code]....

The form bit of my ViewPage<User>:

[Code]....

As far as I can see the only additional thing that is being rendered is this:

[Code]....

Which is interesting/annoying for a few reasons. Firstly all of my annotations appear to have been ignored.Secondly FormId isn't even marked as required, and as this rendered text was taken from a page loaded with a null Model (add mode) the FormId field isn't in the form. Finally, this doesn't even result in any actual validation occuring (on the client side). All the server side validation is working fine.See I am using PasswordFor instead of EditorFor. Because someone at MS testing dropped the ball there. Yes EditorFor renders a password field, but it behaves differently to PasswordFor.. the value of the Password field is sent to the client (set in the value
attribute of the field). Fail.

MVC2 Custom Editor Template Outer Validation Box?

Oct 4, 2010

I've got a custom Editor Template that is essentially:

<div id="control">
<%: Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.Day, Model.Days)%>
<%: Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.Month, Model.Months)%>
<%: Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.Year, Model.Years)%>
</div>

Whilst my validation is successful/fine with this control (ValidationMessageFor works) I have been unable to find how to highlight the control when validation fails (e.g. with a TextBoxFor the textbox border goes red if validation fails)

Does anyone know how I can add this behaviour with a custom editor template?

C# - Test A MVC2 Post Action With Validation When Using MvcContrib TestHelper?

Oct 12, 2010

I'm attempting to write a unit tests for an ASP.NET MVC 2 post action that takes a view model as its sole parameter. The view model is decorated with validation attributes such as [Required]. I'd like to test two scenarios. The first scenario is when a valid set of data is passed in (ie, all required properties have values) and a redirect to the list page is returned. The second scenario involves passing in invalid data (eg, when one or more of the Required properties are not set). In this case the same view is returned with error messages.The action signature is as follows:

[HttpPost]
public virtual ActionResult Create(NewsViewModel model)

The NewsViewModel class is as follows:

public class NewsViewModel
{
public Guid Id { get; set; }

Mvc2 Data Annotations Validation (Client Side Works, Server Side Doesnt?

Aug 12, 2010

I'm using an entity model with metadata annotations. My controller method looks like this...

if (!ModelState.IsValid)
{
return View(model);
}
else
{
UpdateModel(model);
repo.Save();
return RedirectToAction("Index");
}

If I enable client side validation in the view I'll get the error per the Attributes from the metadata class. If I take clientside validation out, error gets thrown from saving to the DB rather than return the view with an Error Summary.

This is the top portion of my view....

<% using (Html.BeginForm())
{%>
<%: Html.ValidationSummary(true) %>

I've tried running without debugging (ctrl + f5) in debug and release mode as well as setting breakpoints and Debugging (f5) but it just seems weird to get Client side validation without server side validation. What am I missing here?

How To Extend Server-side Validation Controls To Raise An Event If Validation Fails

Feb 23, 2010

I am using ASP.NET's server-side validation. In the page_load event I'm calling Page.Validate(), and if Page.IsValid is not true I'm then polling the controls to figure out which ones are not valid, and then determining what actions to take.It would be much easier if each control would raise an event as validation fails, allowing me to take action for that particular control. I'm very much a naive programmer when it comes to validation, but is there a way to extend these controls so that a validation error raises an event?

Jquery Validation Not Working Throwing Error $.validation Is Undefinedj?

Nov 30, 2010

jQuery validation is working fine on my machine, when i pushed it to test server it won't it's throwing some errors which is kind of surprising.These are the errors I am getting: $.validator is null or not an object...I've never gotten this error before and it throwing an error when I declared a variable like var isValid.I don't know what to do. I am doing the custom validation methods not in the document.ready(). Does this cause this error? I wonder because all jquery validations are passing and hitting the server side validations.

Update A ViewModel In MVC2?

Mar 2, 2010

[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Edit(int id, FormCollection fc)
{
Movie movie =
(
from m in _ctx.Movie.Include("MovieActors")
where m.MovieID == id select m
).First();
MovieActorViewModel movieActor = new MovieActorViewModel(movie);
if (TryUpdateModel(movieActor))
{
_ctx.ApplyPropertyChanges(movieActor.Movie.EntityKey.EntitySetName,
movieActor.Movie);
_ctx.SaveChanges();
}
return View(movieActor);
}

However, I am not sure how to test this, and in general would much rather have the method take a typed model like:[HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(MovieActorViewModel movieActor) Is this possible? What changes to my MovieActorViewModel class do I need to make in order to enable this? That class looks like this:

public class MovieActorViewModel
{
public Movie Movie { get; set; }
public Actor Actor { get; set; }
public PublisherDealViewModel(Movie movie)
{
this.Movie = movie;
this.Actor =
(
from a in this.Movie.Actors
where a.ActorID == 1 select a
).First();
}
}

The view is typed (inherits ViewPage) simple:

<% using (Html.BeginForm()) {%>
Movie Title: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model=>model.Movie.Title) %><br/>
Actor Name: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model=>model.Actor.Name) %>
<% } %>

Possible Update To MVC3 From MVC2 Web App

Feb 8, 2011

I tried upgrading the solution to MVC3 in VS2010 by using an upgrader tool I don't know what it does exactly but it didn't work. My "System.Web.Mvc" is not being recognized in my project. Is there anything specific I should be doing with my web.config? I don't quite understand the underlying details about all the places I should be referencing dll's or what "binding" even means and when I should use it inside the web.config So I have to ask, what is the best method for upgrading to MVC3 and what have you done that works?

Using MVC2 EditorTemplate For DropDownList?

Apr 29, 2010

I've spent the majority of the past week knee deep in the new templating functionality baked into MVC2. I had a hard time trying to get a DropDownList template working. The biggest problem I've been working to solve is how to get the source data for the drop down list to the template. I saw a lot of examples where you can put the source data in the ViewData dictionary (ViewData["DropDownSourceValuesKey"]) then retrieve them in the template itself (var sourceValues = ViewData["DropDownSourceValuesKey"];) This works, but I did not like having a silly string as the lynch pin for making this work.

How To Use And/or Localize DisplayAttribute With .NET MVC2

Mar 25, 2010

I am trying to figure out how to get the DisplayAttribute in my MVC 2 ViewModel to work with the Html.LabelFor() helper.

Neither

public class TestModel
{
[Display(ResourceType = typeof(Localization.Labels))][code]...seem to work. Localizing the Required Attribute works as expected:

[Required(ErrorMessageResourceName = "Test", ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof(Localization.Labels))]

I am using VS2010 RC. Has anybody got that running?

Connectionstring Encryption In MVC2 4.0 App?

Nov 16, 2010

I have an MVC2 .NET 4.0 app, hosted on TFS 2008 (soon to be TFS 2010) that uses connection strings in web.config to connect to a database on another server. I need to encrypt these connection strings.

As I understand it, I can use aspnet_regiis.exe to encrypt the connectionstring portion of the web.config file, but I have to do it on the deployment machine because the encryption uses the machine name to generate the encryption key.

Now, it seems to me that this represents a problem - every time I deploy my code to the dev server won't it overwrite the web.config file, and need to be re-encrypted? This sort of manual process seems kludgy.

Is my understanding about needing to re-encrypt after deployment correct? If so, is there some way to automate this process? I don't want to forget this or get a new team member who doesn't know the process and have the connectionstring exposed to the world.

MVC2 Development Without Doing Enough Research About The EF4?

Sep 30, 2010

have starting doing a lot of MVC2 development without doing enough research about the EF4. This lead me to a path which I am not happy with. The way that I laid out my project is that my Models are all ADO.NET Entity Framework Models. Each model is representing database able. Today, I attempted to do a LINQ join on entities which belong to two different data contexts. This resulted in a nasty LINQ error telling me that it can't be done. I hate the fact that the only viable way to use the EF seems to create large models.
