MVC :: Razor Master Layout Not Rendered?

Experimenting with MVC 3 Razor -
After attempted to add jquery script tag to _Layout.cshtml as below, the result is empty body tag rendered in content page. I tried this immediately after creating new project to insure I hadn't mucked anything up. This is run on local Win7 dev machine. Any explanation for this or is there a new way to specify script references in the "master" layout page(s)? Omitting @Url.Content had no effect.

According to IE8 Developer Tools :
- css file is loaded
- js file ref from master/ layout is loaded
- body tag is empty
- no "default" header and menu visible

Im currently using a method that looks like the following code to add script and css files to the head of the Layout file.

My problem is that this is a static method meaning it persists the list of stylesheets and script files.
I need to do the same thing that this does but without keeping it persistant.
I need the lists to be remade on every request since they change from page to page what the look are on that specific page.
Is it possible to clear the lists on every request prior to adding the scripts that are needed or maybe after they have been rendered out?
Update:
The reason for not using a section, RenderPartial or RenderaActions is to prevent the same stylesheet or script file to be added more than once to the Layout file.
The site im building has a Layout_.cshtml with the basic layout. This in turn is used by a View that loops through a list of items and for each item a RenderAction is called that outputs the specific partial view for that item. These partial views sometimes need to add stylesheets and scripts.
As there can be needed to add many different scripts and stylesheets from different partial views a global list for styles and scripts were the only way i thought this could be done so there is a global place to check if a script is allready added to the collection or not and then render them all at once in the order they were added.
Update 2:
The real question is how to do the same kind of function (a global list) but without using a static Extension method.

I can not get the _PageStart.cshtml to work for my layout senario. I would prefer to use _PageStart to define a layout for all files in each folder. Each folder represents a different app feature that will contain different layouts.
Until I find a work about I had to copy and past the Layout ="~/folder/_PageStart.cshtml into each page of the folder to get the different layouts to work.
_PageStart isn't being recognized at all as the folders page start. Is there a web config setting missing? The docs aren't fully extensive yet for all Razor related info and I couldn't find anyone discussing this problem via search results.
In order to keep close to code once and separation I need to use the _PageStart.cshtml method rather than code a line in each page in the folder.
On win7 using both webmatrix and vs2010 web engines. Neither recognizes _PageStart.cshtml but hard coding into each file works.

I am using a <a href=[URL], an open source e-commerce platform, for one of my projects, and I noticed that they use Master Pages as well as user controls. When I looked some of this up, some people made it appear as if Master Pages were intended to replace user controls. Is this true? In my opinion, if I were to start an ASP.NET app from scratch, I would think a Master Page would be enough, but I guess user controls could be utilized.

Im developing an admin section for a cms tool and in previous tools i used a master page, which then had a page called verified.aspx. this contained a menu control and then dependant on which menu item they selected loaded a user control into a multiview controlThis works fine accept for some small annoying post back issues (not refreshing data and also the time taken to load the large amount of controls)
I have a master page with 2 content placeholders. Im my verified page (which uses the master), i have a nav menu on the left. Dependant on the item selected fro the nav menu on the left, id like to poplute the content placeholders content with an aspx page (which contains a user control) or just an apsx page
ive seen a couple of articles suggesting iframe, and a couple suggesting nested master pages but i dont believe i can get this to work with nester masters,

I am new to ASP.NET development and I am running into an issue using master/content pages. I have a master file that basically defines all of the layout for my site. The only thing that the content pages are supposed to display is some very basic text/images/html, made available by one ContentPlaceHolder control in the master file.
My problem is in the display. When I view the content page, none of the layout that should be inherited from the master page is displayed -- I end up with just a 'blank' page. What seems odd, is that if I look at the Design View in VS 2005, the content page appears to show the layout that is defined in the master. Here is a sample of the source for the master and one of the content pages...

A client of mine uses SharePoint to manage its websites, and recently asked me to build a small website for them using ASP.NET, which they would then implement via SharePoint.My skills with ASP.NET are intermediate, and I have no experience at all with SharePoint.I created a master page for the site, as well as the individual pages, but the client is telling me that they also need a page layout template in order to view and manage the site via SharePoint.

I have a web application that uses the master/child page layout you get by default (at least in a VS2010 web project). The Masterpage has a NavigationMenu, each item on that NavigationMenu has a NavigateUrl that looks like "~/Pages/MyPage.aspx". This automatically opens 'MyPage' in the Content of the Masterpage, so that the master page with menu and header etc stays visible.
Now, the client has a guestbook on her old website (I'm basically rebuilding her website, adding the ability for her to upload new content in her browser), and she wants to keep it. This guestbook is from a 'free guestbook' third party website, over which I have no control. It's simply a website in the form [URL] .... which shows the guestbook for a user 'Username'.
In her old website, I was using frames, so the menu on the left side was in a different frame, and I would simply open the third party website in the center frame. That would create the illusion that the guestbook was on her site, while it was actually a completely different website in a separate frame.
In my new website I'm no longer using frames, but the master/child layout as explained. Is it still possible to 'host' or 'embed' this third party website as a 'child' of the master page?
I tried just putting the url to the guestbook in the NavigateUrl of a NavigationMenu item, but that doesn't work, it just navigates to the third party website and doesn't embed it in any way.

I have a report that is created using Telerik Reporing 2010.You have the ability to export to PDF.One of the cells contains a standard hyperlink that when viewed from the report view works fine
The cell contains this simple link<a href="http://site.com">link</a>What I would like to be able to do is maintain the hyperlink functionality when the report is rendered to PDF.Im assuming PDF requires something more than just HTML to render a link ?

If I use html.beginform on my partial view, the attributes get rendered. If I remove html.beginform and instead use jQuery to load my partial view into a dialog, the validation attributes aren't firing even after I've called $.validator.unobtrusive.parse(selector) because the attributes are not getting added to the html. Im using Html.EditorFor, and the attributes don't show up unless I put an Html.BeginForm around it.How can I force the attributes (they are [Required] on my model)?

i am developing in vb.net. i have a gridview with a template field, in which i have a asp:image tag. But the browser dont show any image. i does not render the image. if i check the sourccode in the browser there is no image tag. But the visual web developer show the image. i tried all avriation of paths.

When using an asp.net CheckBox (and in out case, inherited from a CheckBox) it renders a span around the checkbox input control, this span control is affecting jQuery scripts.
Is it possible to remove this span when rendering?

I have a few controls (a panel containing some textboxes and dropdownlists) that are hidden until the user clicks a button to toggle their visibility. The toggling is done via JQuery and works great. One thing that bothers me is that although this panel is hidden when the page finishes loading, you can see it while the load/render process is taking place. So you can see it and then all of a sudden it fades out. Is there a way to hide it earlier in the process so we don't see it at all? I did try putting visible = "false" on the panel definition, and then you can't see the panel on loading which is good, but then my JQuery code won't toggle it to visible. Perhaps my JQuery code needs tweaking.

This lets us the same user controls when rendering pages normally as we do when rendering responses to ajax calls. However, when adding controls which themselves contain a scriptmanagerProxy we run into the problem that the newed up Page object doesn't contain either a ScriptManager or the HtmlForm in which the ScriptManager needs to run.

Recently we copied an ASP.NET WebForms solution. In this solution we are using some ASP:ListBoxes where the Rows property is set to more than 1.
This renders following HTML..

Looks fine to me. But the strange thing is that in the copied solution the browser doesn't render what it should be rendering. The size property seems to be ignored. It just gets rendered as if the size was set to one.
This applies to all listboxes in the solution. I compared the masterpages and web.configs and there are no differences. This issue also applies to all browsers. I used IE8 Developer tools to compare the documentmodes and they are the same for both solutions.

I have to add a loaded dropdown control...so I declared..

Then added the control in the middle of the render where I wanted as follows...
ddMyDropDown.RenderControl(writer);
Everything is fine....except... the post back does not work. My event handlers are not getting executed.
When I add the control ...like Controls.Add(Control) then it adds at the bottom of the part. That is not what I want.
So how do I get the post back to work?

Although I'm a huge fan of Databound controls since ASP.Net 2.0 and have been using them a lot since learning them, I seem to have stumbled upon an unnoticed(or rather not cared about) issue that these controls seem to have.
I'm using ASP.Net 3.5 and the issue that I noticed is that when using Databound controls(such as Labels, HyperLinks) inside a Data-Control(such as Datalist, Gridview etc.), even if the value returned for one column is NULL, it is still rendered albeit as an empty tag.
For eg: I have a Datalist in which I have a Label whose value may or may not be NULL. Now there's no problem when the value is not NULL, the problem is when the value is NULL. Ideally, no HTML should be rendered for a controls that don't have any value, but in this case, the HTML(<span></span> in case of the Label) of the corresponding NULL valued control is still being rendered.
Now, as I said earlier that most people won't care about this as it isn't much of an issue, but if you consider the fact that this control may be enclosed in a hierarchy of parent controls, and then repeated many a times, this could significantly increase the HTML content(since the ID of your HTML content is based on the parent controls) without any Text added to maintain the Text/HTML ratio, thereby becoming a cause for the Search Engines to shy away from indexing your pages fully.
I couldn't find anything related to this matter anywhere else so I thought to bring it up here. Is this really an issue with databound controls or am I missing something here?
