Web Forms :: Achieving Layout - Nested Master Page Or Iframes

Oct 12, 2010

Im developing an admin section for a cms tool and in previous tools i used a master page, which then had a page called verified.aspx. this contained a menu control and then dependant on which menu item they selected loaded a user control into a multiview controlThis works fine accept for some small annoying post back issues (not refreshing data and also the time taken to load the large amount of controls)

I have a master page with 2 content placeholders. Im my verified page (which uses the master), i have a nav menu on the left. Dependant on the item selected fro the nav menu on the left, id like to poplute the content placeholders content with an aspx page (which contains a user control) or just an apsx page

ive seen a couple of articles suggesting iframe, and a couple suggesting nested master pages but i dont believe i can get this to work with nester masters,

Web Forms :: Master Page Layout Not Displaying On Content Page?

Mar 27, 2010

I am new to ASP.NET development and I am running into an issue using master/content pages. I have a master file that basically defines all of the layout for my site. The only thing that the content pages are supposed to display is some very basic text/images/html, made available by one ContentPlaceHolder control in the master file.

My problem is in the display. When I view the content page, none of the layout that should be inherited from the master page is displayed -- I end up with just a 'blank' page. What seems odd, is that if I look at the Design View in VS 2005, the content page appears to show the layout that is defined in the master. Here is a sample of the source for the master and one of the content pages...

Master Page: content_pages.master
<%@ Master Language="VB" CodeFile="content_pages.master.vb" Inherits="content_pages" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >
<head id="Head1" runat="server">
... links to CSS & Javascript files here (removed for simpler display in this post) ...
</head>
<body>
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<div id="content_holder">
<div id="content_background_top"></div>
<div id="content_background_middle">
<div id="header">
<div id="menu">... Menu Item Code (removed for simpler display in this post) ...</div>
</div>
<div id="gray_fade_bar"></div>
<div id="site_page_main">
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder id="PageContent" runat="server"></asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
</div>
<div id="footer">Footer Text Here</div>
</div>
<div id="content_background_bottom"></div>
</div>
</form>
</body>
</html>

Content Page: locations_odessa.aspx

<%@ Page Language="VB" MasterPageFile="~/content_pages.master" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="locations_odessa.aspx.vb" Inherits="locations_odessa" title="Untitled Page" %>
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="PageContent" Runat="Server">

Web Forms :: Get Nested Master Page From Main Master Page

May 30, 2010

I'm trying to dynamically change the look of my main master page depending on what nested master page that the current content page is using .

So for example.

Main master page = main.master
My nested page = nested.master (uses main.master)
content page = content.aspx (uses nested.master)

So in the Page_Load event of main.master I want to add a switch statement that will check to see what nested master page is currently being used by content.aspx, or whatever content page is loaded.

So far I have got

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string nMaster = //This is the line of code that I am looking for.
switch(master)
{
case "nested.master":
//all my logic here.
break;
}
}

.NET Master Page Vs. SharePoint Page Layout Template?

Aug 10, 2010

A client of mine uses SharePoint to manage its websites, and recently asked me to build a small website for them using ASP.NET, which they would then implement via SharePoint.My skills with ASP.NET are intermediate, and I have no experience at all with SharePoint.I created a master page for the site, as well as the individual pages, but the client is telling me that they also need a page layout template in order to view and manage the site via SharePoint.

Web Forms :: Interaction From Nested Master Pages To Content Page

Apr 12, 2010

I have 2 nested master pages, lets call them MP1 and MP2. MP1 is top level, MP2 is level

2. Then I have several content pages. Lets say I have 2 content pages for now CP1 and CP2. Each content page has a form that will have some user input and a SaveData()function that saves the data to a database. Each content page also has a "Save" button that calls the SaveData() function.

MP1 and MP2 have several link buttons. The functionality I need is this: Any time a user clicks on a link button in MP1 or MP2, the SaveData() function of the currently loaded page should be called. This is to save the data even if the user forgets to click the "Save" button before leaving the page.

So far I can do this from the link buttons in MP2. I followed the master pages tutorial # 7

In the .cs file for MP2, I declare:

public event EventHandler SaveData;

then i raise a "SaveData" event any time a link button in MP2 is clicked.in every content page (CP1, CP2 etc.) aspx file, I have Master Type directive to assign the Master Page to MP2.

in CP1, CP2 etc .cs file, i have the following code:
protected void Page_PreInit(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//wire up the SaveData event from MP2 to Master_SaveData function in this page.
Master.SaveData += new EventHandler(Master_SaveData);
}
private void Master_SaveData(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//when the MP2 SaveData event is raised, save the data in this page.
SaveData();
}

All of this works fine.Problem is I am not able to do a similar thing from MP1.What I have tried so far is to raise an event in MP1 that is handled in MP2. When the event is handled in MP2, it raises the SaveData event to be handled in the page. The event in MP1 is null and hence never raised.

C# - Listing All Nested User Controls From A Master Page On Page Load?

Dec 1, 2010

On page load is there a way to enumerate all the nest user controls for that specific page load?

I'd like to be able to enumerate all the user controls that implement an interface, and call the interface method for the controls before asp.net passes control to thier page_load events.

The problem is from the master page level, any page in the app could be loading, and each of them could have any random user control, and I need the type reference to determine if they implement the interface, and to call the method.

Access &lt;body Element From Content Page Via A Nested Master Page

May 19, 2010

All I want to do is access the <body> element from the code-behind of a content page and add a class name to it.

I have a top-level master page with the <body> element in it. Then I have a nested master page which is the master page for the content page. From the code behind of the content page I want to add a class name to the body element. That's all.

I have this in the top-level master:

<body id="bodyNode" runat="server">

I added this to the code-behind for the content page:

Master.bodyNode.Attributes.add("class", "home-page");

And I get a message that:

System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition for 'bodyNode

If I add this to the aspx content page:

<% @ MasterType VirtualPath="~/MasterPage.master"%>

The message then changes to:

bodyNode is inaccessible due to its protection level

I've wasted like 2 hours on what feels like something that should be really simple to do

VS 2010 - Master / Child Page Layout - Embed Third Party Website As Child Page

Aug 29, 2011

I have a web application that uses the master/child page layout you get by default (at least in a VS2010 web project). The Masterpage has a NavigationMenu, each item on that NavigationMenu has a NavigateUrl that looks like "~/Pages/MyPage.aspx". This automatically opens 'MyPage' in the Content of the Masterpage, so that the master page with menu and header etc stays visible.

Now, the client has a guestbook on her old website (I'm basically rebuilding her website, adding the ability for her to upload new content in her browser), and she wants to keep it. This guestbook is from a 'free guestbook' third party website, over which I have no control. It's simply a website in the form [URL] .... which shows the guestbook for a user 'Username'.

In her old website, I was using frames, so the menu on the left side was in a different frame, and I would simply open the third party website in the center frame. That would create the illusion that the guestbook was on her site, while it was actually a completely different website in a separate frame.

In my new website I'm no longer using frames, but the master/child layout as explained. Is it still possible to 'host' or 'embed' this third party website as a 'child' of the master page?

I tried just putting the url to the guestbook in the NavigateUrl of a NavigationMenu item, but that doesn't work, it just navigates to the third party website and doesn't embed it in any way.

Adding A TabPanel On A Nested Page From A Master Page?

Feb 3, 2010

I come from a windows dev environment so the web makes me feel like a big dummy.

I am using VS2008, VB.NET, 3.5 Framework, ASP.NET, AjaxControlToolkit.

I have included a screen shot that might help to look at while you read my attempt to explain my issue below!

I just recently discovered in a book here on my desk how to interact with a master page programmatically from a nested master page or a regular aspx child page. The method they describe makes sense and is familar to me because they use Public Properties on the master page to manipulate the GUI and controls on the master page. But since they are public, the child pages can see them and fire them off. Makes sense.

I thought I could use this method to do the opposite of that and have the master page fire off something (say a public property in a nested page) to have it then do some work and update things on that nested page.

For example,

I have a MASTERPAGE.MASTER. Under that, I have a LEFTNAV.MASTER (so its a nested master page). Then, under that I have my default.aspx page.

(I did that so that for some of my regular aspx pages I could just tie them directly to the master page so that they dont have a left navigation page...like for big charts or graphs, etc. Is that the best way for that by the way?)

So on the masterpage, I have just a simple asp.net search textbox and an asp.net search button. When they type something in and click search, I want it to add a tab to the AJAXControlToolkit - TabPanel that I have on the default.aspx page, then some other things such as update a datagridview there with the search results.

I can do all of this except the event firing and scope. I cannot see a way to make a button on the master page up top fire off an event that is on the default.aspx page to make it do what it needs to do.

What I tried doing was creating a public property on my default.aspx page. I have some actual code in the SET to do some GUI manipulation and change some stuff on the page. But on my master page within the search button's click event, I cannot see where to call this public property on the default.aspx page...

Web Forms :: Retain Treeview And Its Status On Page Load Inside Iframes

Apr 21, 2010

I have 2 iframes in my page and 2 separate pages linked to each of these iframes. In one iframe page a tab control is placed with treeview on each tabs and the tree items are selectable (treeview with checkbox). On navigation of one tab from other an XML document stored in session is being updated with the selected treenode values.

The second iframe page is places on right side of the page which summarize the selected made on the each tabs. To do this, the page is getting loaded on tab navigation and in page load of that page, the treeview id created and displayed. We created the treeview as an object and kept in session variable then added into a panel. The only modified areas require to be updated instead of binding the entire tree on each tab's navigation.

1. The treeview must retain it's collapse/expand status on tab navigation which is not happening now.

2. When I set EnableClientScript property to true, I'm getting error on expand/collapse as Undefined 'somenodename' error. If I set the value as false, then postback is happening which should not.
