I have an entity object as model input in my view. Not sure if it's the best approach, but I use the object references to get values from a related object.Let's say I've got a car entity and a manufacturer entity.Here's how it would look in my view
[Code]....
I've get a nullreferenceexception where the car entitity does not have a reference towards manufacturer. I'd like to output a " " if no manufacturer exists.

Prior to using a ViewModel, I could easily pass the "soon to be edited" object directly to the view without needing to fuss over setting individual properties etc as the View conveniently accepted the Employee type directly..
[HttpGet]
public ActionResult EditEmployee(int? id)
{
EmployeeRepository ER = new EmployeeRepository();
Employee SomeEmployee = ER.GetEmployee(id.Value);
if(SomeEmployee!=null)
return View(SomeEmployee);
But now I'm using a ViewModel with DataAnnotations attributes applied over the top of various properties for validation purposes. Which creates a problem.. After fetching the "soon to be edited" object from the db, setting the ViewModel's values is suddenly a whole lot more complicated. I can't simply pass the retrieved object straight to the view, as the View now expects the VMEmployee type instead. I would like to be able to do something like:
[HttpGet]
public ActionResult EditEmployee(int? id)
{
EmployeeRepository ER = new EmployeeRepository();
Employee SomeEmployee = ER.GetEmployee(id.Value);
if(SomeEmployee!=null)
return View(new VMEmployee(SomeEmployee));
All paths seem to lead to a huge constructor which manually sets the values of each individual property. But I never had to do that before when I wasn't using a ViewModel. Model binding was a blessing! My objects also have complex child objects, which my form is also collecting values for, so this would be a huge/verbose task against DRY principals. I don't even really want to use a ViewModel, but am forced to because I need two different DataAnnotations rule sets for different validation scenarios applied to the same object.
All I want to do is be able to have two different DataAnnotations rule sets for different scenarios. I.e. public-facing www site vs internal-facing admin site. DataAnnotations doesn't seem to be flexible enough to easily cater for this common need. I've tried AutoMapper, but it throws an error saying it can't map my object types, I suspect because Employee was auto-generated by LINQ to SQL. What is the most elegant way to achieve this while sticking to DRY principals?

I have a partial view that is rendered on a view. That partial view has textboxes in it. The user can enter values into them.
I need to put all the values from the textboxes in my partial view into an array, and then give the view (the parent page rendering that partial view) access to that array.

my solution currently has a website project and a class library project. I am attempting to access a session object from my class library but it is always returning null. In a settings class in my class library I store these values like so:
private static SessionProperty<WebUser> _currentUser = new SessionProperty<WebUser>("CurrentUser", delegate { return new WebUser(); });
public static WebUser CurrentUser
{
get { return _currentUser.Value; }
set { _currentUser.Value = value; }
}
I can access this just fine from any aspx page codebehind like so:
Settings.CurrentUser.User.ProviderUserKey.ToString();
However, if I attempt to do the same thing from a class in my classlibrary project it always returns null.

i have an MVC 1 application in vs 2010, it uses the session to pass around the object from viewmodel to view model as it needs it I am seeing issues using this way due to the fact that after a time limit the object loss thier state I want to avoid this, what would be the best practice on passing the object from view to view along with the changes that occur to along the way.even if these changes ARE not persisted to a database meaing only exsisting in that user instance until the workflow completes and they actually save the item...

how to retrieve a value from a typed dataset. I am trying to retrieve a value from a row within a row return from a tabale adapter method. Example:
Dim transAPI As New PN_TransactionBLL()
Dim trans As PN.RetrieveGEmailDataTable = transAPI.getGEmail(itemtId)
The tabeadapter method retrieves 1 row of data and I would like to pull the values retrived such as "trans.rowproperty"(if thats the correct syntax) where "rowproperty" would contain the actual value returned.

I am creating an ASP.NET application that allows the user to add form elements to a page within a form. When the page is posted (via the submit button) I need to loop through ALL the posted values in the form and get the values.
I can't check for specific values as I don't know how many there will be or what they will be called.
Could someone point me in the right direction of getting ALL posted values so I can loop through them?
p.s I was looking in Request.Form but couldn't see anything obvious to use.

I have a form in a page and a panel inside the form.The panel gets loaded with dynamic controls like radio button and text boxes.
User is allowed to choose any radio option and enter any value in the textbox beside it and then goes for submit button to move to next stage.
Problem Descritopn:
I load the controls in the panel based on the index of a combo control on the same form.it is done in selectedIndexChanged - This is working fine.
When i go for the submit button and ask for the textbox control, it says "object reference not set to instance of object", denoting that instance is not available. Moreover the panel control list gets empty automatically.

I'm an experienced PHP programmer that is new to ASP.net (C#). I'm trying to figure out how to do a manual echo of a specific field from an SQL database and was wondering how you do an if condition in case the field would meet certain criteria ?
What I want the script to do is check in the database if a certain condition is activated, then the html page should echo a windows media player object with the source of the video coming from the database itself ( $line[Video], and if the condition isn't active then either don't echo the player or just echo an old video (in the script I'm just printing a message).

I am having a form in a view page that looks as below:
[Code]...
Now when the form is posted, I am trying to retrieve the values submitted in the controller as below:
[Code]...
The string value shows null when I submit the form by checking some checkboxes. Is this the way to retrieve the values or am I doing something wrong? And I cannot use html control because all other controls on the form are server controls and I am not sure if I can only make this control a html control. And I am not sure how can I bind the values to it?

A strange issue.. and probably some key thing I am missing...I am using the MS Enterprise Library version 5.0.. specifically the cache engine.
I have a website where from a certain page I do the following:
Cache some values I need for the next page or two..
Go off to another site - actually a payment site..
That payment site returns to my site..
I retrieve the cache values to show..
Ok, I know I am going to probably get shot here.. but apparently on the "odd" occasion, a user says they see the details from a previous user?
I thought when you cache an item (session, cache or whatever), this is only relative to the users session?
