Page Render Time In ASP.MVC In Trace

May 24, 2010

I want to check render time of each page in asp.net mvc application.

i am using asp.net tracing. i have override the OnActionExecuting and OnActionExecuted methods on the BaseController class.

protected override void OnActionExecuting(ActionExecutingContext filterContext)
{
string controler = filterContext.RouteData.Values["controller"].ToString();
string action = filterContext.RouteData.Values["action"].ToString();
StartTime =System.DateTime.Now;
System.Diagnostics.Trace.Write(string.Format("Start '{0}/{1}' on: {2}", controler, action, System.DateTime.Now.UtilToISOFormat()));
}
protected override void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext filterContext)
{
string controler = filterContext.RouteData.Values["controller"].ToString();
string action = filterContext.RouteData.Values["action"].ToString();
var totalTime = System.DateTime.Now - this.StartTime;
System.Diagnostics.Trace.Write(totalTime.ToString());
System.Diagnostics.Trace.Write(string.Format("End '{0}/{1}' on: {2}", controler, action, System.DateTime.Now.UtilToISOFormat()));
}

in OnActionExecuted method i get total time. how can i show this time in my http://localhost:51335/Trace.axd report?

Even i had set Trace="true" in <%@ Page %> on every page also.

Web Forms :: Page Call Not Being Shown In Trace.axd And Session For That Page Not Valid

Jan 26, 2010

Having a very strange problem and just wondered if anyone could shed some light on it. I have a page that takes a file and posts it (using a flash control) to another page on the same site. Now this other paged is used simply to take the file from the request and save it to disk. However when i try and set a session value there the calling page can not access this session variable (no matter how long i do a thread.sleep. It is simply nit finding the variable.

When i looked deeper into this I ran trace.axd and much to my surprise the page that is called does not show up in the list. But it is defnitely being called as the file that the original page sent has been saved to disk.

Web Form Render Engine Outputs A Control Tree / Looking For Info On Render Logic.

Feb 12, 2011

I've been watching a video on Scott Hanselmnn teaching MVC 2 tricks/tips. He mentions how MVC 2 by default uses ASP.NET Web Forms view engine to render the output of the views; he mentions that the web forms view engine is a little slower than it could be for MVC 2 since it generates a control tree and then outputs the HTML to the page (I hope I said that right).

I was wondering what he meant by web forms generating a code tree before outputting the HTML to the page. Does anyone have insight on the view engine of Web forms and the steps of the rendering process works for ASP.NET and MVC2?

AJAX :: How To Keep Value After Page Render Again

May 8, 2010

in my updatePanle have 5 controls

RadioButton1 TextBox1 TextBox2
RadioButton2 TextBox3

I use javascript to change TextBoxes's Status each time RadioButton.onClick

now I want to force controls in UpdatePanel render again eachtime RadioButton clicked..

I add _doPostback to my javascript..

the result is not ok... because I lost the value after page render again

for example,user fill in these value to controls

RadioButton1 (Checked) TextBox1 (Text= 90 , Style = "AA") TextBox2 (Text=30 style="BB")
RadioButton2 TextBox3

then user change controls like this

RadioButton1 TextBox1 (Text= 90) TextBox2 (Text=30)

RadioButton2 (Checked) TextBox3

I want to force controls render again but keep the value and style .

C# - What Happens When A Page Render Times Out

Feb 19, 2010

I have a question that I can't quite find the answer to...

If you have an ASP.Net page that takes longer than the request time-out to render what happens to that process? Does the web service abort it?

Lets say I'm writing XML to the response stream in an ASP.Net page and it times-out calling my GenerateXML method. What happens to my method call? Does it complete but the web server reports the time out? or is it aborted?

I could probably write a test to see my own results but I figure there might be more to it.

Page_Load Events Executed Every Time A Page Was Loaded Not Just The First Time?

Aug 5, 2010

I thought that Page_Load events executed every time a page was loaded not just the first time. Am I wrong on this?

I have a Page_Load event that writes text to a label to display on the screen: Output.Text &= "Welcome to my Website <br />" (Output being the ID of a Label control)

I also have an On_Click event for a button to display the same information: Output.Text &= "Welcome to my Website <br />"

After clicking the button, I expected to see the output twice. Once for the page being reloaded and once for the click event. I thought that Page_Load events executed every time a page was loaded not just the first time.

AJAX :: IE 8 Causes Page To Render Slow?

Apr 21, 2010

I have an application that runs perfectly fine and fast in IE 7. There are certain pages in the application that use the AlwaysVisibleExtender control.

However, when I run the app in IE 8, the same exact pages seem to lock up for roughly 5 seconds before they render completely. What's weird is that the page shows all the contents except for the alwaysvisibleextender and relating panel. Then after the 5 seconds the panel shows. During that 5 seconds the page cannot be navigated or scrolled. This is not really acceptable.

Render Page Into Custom Output?

Jan 31, 2011

Letīs take an usual aspx page, ~/admin/template.aspx

The admin folder allows only "Admin" roles for example.

Now I donīt want to run the template.aspx as usual, but I want it be called from a active process. Letīs say Iīm on ~/admin/buildMyStuff.aspx and there Iīm collecting some data, I now have some querystring, like "?do=this$andDo=that$index={0}". Now I want, using this template, loop through my data and generate my ouput, putting it then for example in a static html or in a text file or something else.

How should I do that? Calling it as new request, waiting for response? What I have to do, that it is running under the "Admin" role, or is it doing it automatically, since I already am admin?

Or is there another possibility, that allows me to run the template page and specifiing my custom htmltextwriter as output?

EDIT:

public static string RenderPageAndGetHtml(string pageUrl, string pageQuery)
{
var sw = new StringWriter();
var wr = new SimpleWorkerRequest(pageUrl, pageQuery, sw);

C# - How To Render A Partial View By Name Within A Master Page

Jan 16, 2011

I am trying to implement something like Ruby on Rail's ActionDispatch::Flash to pass messages to the next page request. The approach that I want to take is to store a pair of (partial view name, model object) in the session context and render it in the master page when rendering the request to display the flash message.

Inside my HttpApplication subclass I now have:

[Code]....

to render the partial view that was specified by name when Global#Flash was called.

I want to use a view for the flash message instead of saving the message as a string in the session context because I want to include the URL in the message:

<%-- BookmarkAddedFlash.ascx --%>
<%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyApp.Web.Models.Bookmark_AddModel>" %>
<%: Html.DisplayTextFor(m => m.Url) %> was successfully bookmarked.

And I only want to render the view when the subsequent request is made; i.e. one request sets the flash message and the subsequent request renders it.

C# - Pdf Render To Web Page Results In Static Title?

Nov 22, 2010

having a slight issue where i am rendering a pdf (stored as a byte array) into an asp.net web page, using the code below:

Response.ClearContent();
Response.AppendHeader("content-length", document.Length.ToString());
Response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
Response.BinaryWrite(document);
Response.Flush();
Response.Close();

This works with no issues at all, however in order to render this pdf (ie. return the byte array) we are calling a web service by passing a few parameters in the QueryString. This is where the issue comes in. Once the PDF renders, it shows the title as the complete url + query string of the page. obviously, for security reasons we dont want users getting a hold of that information.does anyone know how to set the title of the page once the pdf renders out? i have tried making the header run server side, however it doesnt have any effect. interestingly, if the pdf render fails, or a data method fails before hand it changes the title correctly. its almost like once it hits the pdf rendering it changes the title back to the url/querystring.

in addition to this, i also checked the title of the PDF that was passed back by the web service and the title stored in the PDF properties is completely different to the title rendered on the title bar of the page.

Visual Studio 2010 - Site Upgraded VS08 - VS10, And Now Compile-time Errors Do Not Show Until I Request The Page At Run-time?

Mar 11, 2011

I have an ASP.NET website that worked fine using and debugging in VS2008. I went through the upgrade process opening the solution in VS2010. I can run the site, but as I make changes in the app_code folder classes, they don't seem to commpile and warn me of compile-time errors. As soon as I get to a point that calls the class, the errors show up. Sounds JIT I guess, but this isn't how it was working in 08. Is there an option that was changed in the upgrade process? This is a large project, I really don't want to break something and not find out until some obscure page is opened.
