Page.User Is Null During AJAX Request?

Jul 26, 2010

I'm using the MVC2 framework and one of my views has a bit of conditional logic that gets the Page.User.Identity object and does a comparison with other values to determine what to display.That all works fine on the initial page load, but when I make an AJAX call to get partial page updates (I'm doing this all manually with YUI3, not the .NET AJAX stuff) the Page.User object is always null.

UrlRewriting.Net Module + IIS7 Equals Page.User == Null?

Jan 8, 2010

I've used the UrlRewriting.Net module for a couple years now without any problems in Windows XP and Windows 2003. I just recently upgraded my home PC to Windows 7 and started developing a new website.The plan was to use .html extensions and rewrite them to their .aspx counterparts using the UrlRewriting.Net module. Everything works flawlessly in VWD 2008, but when I try running it through IIS7 it is a different story.

When I try to access a page via the .html rewrite I can no longer access Page.User; it keeps returning null. If I hit the page using it's .aspx extension, Page.User is correctly populated. I should also mention that I have a LoginView controller in my Master Page and it suffers from the same symptoms: When accessing via .html extension it shows the AnonyousTemplate; When using .aspx extension it properly shows the LoggedInTemplate. I'm guessing the two are related.

[Note: I've also tried extensionless URLs and they exhibit the same problem]

The only way I've gotten it to work is to switch the application pool to Classic, which then requires me to add an ASP.Net ddl handler for the .html extension [otherwise it is handled by the StaticFileHandler and comes up as a 404 error]. However, I'd like my web app to run properly for people without having to fiddle around with IIS.So I am left with several questions:Does anyone have ideas as to why Page.User always equals null for .html => .aspx rewritten pages?

Why does it work in VWD 2008, but not IIS7?

What changed from IIS6 => IIS7 that could have caused this?

[Note: I just tried a .aspx => .aspx rewrite and it did not exhibit the problem. Not really what I want, but thought I should mention it.]

Updating Div After Full Page Refresh Following AJAX Request?

Jun 9, 2010

I have an AJAX controller action which returns JSON. The returned JSON is handled via jQuery and contains a message displayed in an update div. The JSON also contains a flag which indicates a change in state. If this is true the entire page needs to be reloaded from a different url. This is currently performed in the jQuery using window.location.replace(url). In the situation where a full page refresh occurs, I still want to display the message from the JSON in the update div, but after the page has fully reloaded.

How can I ensure the div is updated with the message after the window.location.replace call and the page has been completely reloaded? (I realise AJAX is not intended for full page refreshes but I can't think of a simple way of avoiding it in this scenario. Normal behaviour here is updating the div with a status message.)

AJAX :: Extra Request To A Default Page On A Callback?

Sep 25, 2010

I have a following issue (it's only happening in Internet Explorer).

I add callback to a page in the old-fashioned way -> Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(...)

The scenario is: 1) The default page is being loaded. On Page_OnLoad it assigns a NULL to some session key. Let's call it Control -> Session["Control"] = null;

2) User presses a button and gets redirected to a next page (let's call it NextPage.aspx) using javascript event -> window.location.assign(....) (also tried .href = ... - no help)

3) The NextPage.aspx assigns some value to Session["Control"] on Page_OnLoad

5) User clicks a button on the NextPage.aspx and a callback request is being sent to a server....

TA DA!!! The interesting part:

6) Along with the request to the NextPage.aspx another request is being sent to the default page.

7) The only response is being recieved by a client is a response from the NextPage.aspx BUT since the code on the default page is being executed it puts null to the Session["Control"] which screws all my following scenario. the default page doesn't recognize the request as a callback? so if(IsCallback) {} doesn't help....

I believe it's not a code issue since as I wrote above it works in development environment,but I have no clue what can 'cause it to fail in production and only in IE...

At least what to start to look at... and I have Helicon's ISAPI Rewrite installed on the production server. It doesn't seem to be the cause but who knows....

Correction

if I do not assign window.location and just add a link to the NextPage.aspx and click it manualy after callback ended it still sends extra request to the default page. if I click the link before I initialize callback it works fine without extra request.

AJAX :: ScriptResource.axd Is Being Invoked Several Times Per Each Aspx Page Request

Apr 1, 2010

I use ASP.NET Ajax in my web site and I am monitoring the HTTP requests per each page. I am surprised by the excessive call of ScriptResource.axd with different query string variables. I am pasting a sample of HTTP trace below. The call for ScriptResource.axd take lots time percentage out of total response time. Is this by design or there is something wrong with my AJAX configuration in web.config?

Actually it is degrading the performance of the application. And the user experience becoming very poor in case of lower bandwidth.

Ajax - Verify Permissions On All SQL Accounts Along Request Sequence Of ASPX Page?

I have a previously working ASPX website which also supports AJAX. However, we just upgraded our SQL Server from 2008 Evaluation to 2008 R2 version 10.50.16 and now this website is no longer working. I believe the problem is that now we need to again restore original SQL accounts and settings prior to this upgrade. This website also uses AJAX. Which accounts need to be created to fix this problem? When I navigate to this URL, I get the message below:

The address is not valid.

AJAX :: CalendarExtender Giving Error On Page . 'sys.extended.ui.textboxwrapper Is Null Or Not An Object'

Nov 27, 2010

I decided to use the CalendarExtender on a project and I converted it from VS 2005 to Web Developer 2010 Express. I initially added the AJAX toolkit for ASP.NET 4.0 and the calendar extender worked fine. However, I realised that the server didn't have ASP.NET 4.0 installed and I thought it would be simpler to add the toolkit for 3.5 instead and change the target framework to 3.5. I tried and then the CalendarExtender did't work at all. When you click the textbox nothing happens. There is the error on page - 'sys.extended.ui.textboxwrapper is null or not an object'

I tried switching the project back to 4.0 and using the other one and that no longer works for some reason. The same in 2008 Web Developer Express. I've clearly done something wrong along the way, but I can't work out what it is.

Here's the source for a page on a test Web Developer 2008 Express project.

Web Forms :: User Controls Are Null When Referenced Inside The Code Behind For The User Control?

Sep 1, 2010

I have an ASP.NET 4.0 application with some simple user controls. The user controls work fine on the design surface (VS.NET 2010), but when they're loaded during application execution, nothing shows up.

Futhermore, the various child controls of the user controls are null when referenced inside the code behind for the user control.

The code behind for the user control executes as expected, but any reference to child controls are null.

It's like ASP.NET is never parsing the ASCX to create the instances of the child controls.

AJAX :: Session Expired Page After 20 Mins Even If The User Is Working On The Page?

Jun 15, 2010

I have an aspx page that has all its controls inside the scriptmanager and update panel.

I want to send the user to sessionexpired page after 20 mins of inactivity.

For this, I am writing the below code on page_load

Response.AppendHeader(
"Refresh", Convert.ToString((Session.Timeout * 60) + 10) &
"; URL=SessionExpired.aspx")

But the page is going to sessionexpired page after 20 mins even if the user is working on the page.

I think since I have all my controls in an update panel it is not doing a complete postback and hence the session object is not getting refreshed.

C# - Why Is The Call To Request.QueryString["ReturnUrl"] Returning NULL

Jan 29, 2010

(This is a more narrow question)

In my asp.net MVC action, I am looking if the ReturnUrl value is in the URL.

My Url looks like this:

[URL]

In my action, I am looking if that querystring value exists, and it is returning NULL?? How can this be?

The code:

if(Request.QueryString["ReturnUrl"] != null)
{
}

Tracing through the application, it is just skipping the if statement's body i.e. it is NULL.

How can this be explained?
