Page To Download A File Requires Processing In Webclient?
Jan 11, 2011
I'm trying to use a java servlet in a 3rd party tool's web interface (CA service desk) to invoke it's download file functionality using a webclient in vb.net. The trouble is the text stream from response is markup and not the acutual text file stream.
It's like the page is redirecting to another page which actually presents the file for downloading. I have no idea what the redirected page URL is.
Is there a way I can process this redirected page in order to get at the download using a system.net.webclient?

I am a rookie when it comes to SSL and I need to secure a page that requires credit card processing. What steps are involved in tackling this? Is it a seamless intregration point once the cert is setup on the server?

I am using webclient object to download a file to a windows folder from a sharepoint document library. The credentials I am passing to the webclient object are that of site collection administrator. everything works fine while i test it by uploading a file to the document library. But since the document library is email enabled; when an email is received the file is not transferred to the windows folder. i have put some workflow history events to see which user account is used when the email is received. the user account shown is the network service account. I have given write permissions on the folder to all the users; Everyone, Network service, the site collection administrator user etc. but still i cant figure out what is the problem.

At one point this was working, but somewhere something happened. What I am trying to do is simply download a page from our local site. I keep getting the 401 unauthorized.
I have tried NetworkCredential("user", "password", "domain")
and
CredentialCache cc = new CredentialCache();
cc.Add(new Uri("http://site/"), "Windows", new System.Net.NetworkCredential("user", "password", "domain"));
but that didnt work . We are using Windows authentication with no anonymous access.
Here is what was once working:
WebClient wc = new WebClient();
string FileName = Server.MapPath(\App_Data\rpt.htm);
wc.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
wc.DownloadFile("http://site/Report.aspx?OrderNum=7534&Type=inv&BE=1", FileName);

I am using the code below to download multiple attachments from a TFS server:
[code]....
However, there are a couple of problems with this approach:
The Thread.Sleep() is locking up my Form. I still need to make my own Thread or use BackgroundWorker. (I would like to avoid this as much as possible)The DownloadFileCompleted event is being triggered after ALL files has been downloaded. I don't know if this is a side-effect of using
System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000);
Is there a better approach to download files one at a time using WebClient.DownloadFileAsync?

I'm about to submit my pad file to multiple sharware sites but the pad file has to have a direct link to the download file and can't link to a download page which is what I would like to do, so I can track the traffic and get the downloader's email before allowing the download. I am running an ASP.NET site in VB. Is there a way to tell the web app to redirect to a specific aspx page when it receives a request for a specific file?

We have a very simple ASP.Net page for uploading a file to our webserver. The page has no controls - a client uses it to automatically send us a file each night.
On occasion, the file seems to not get to us, but the client reports that they have sent it.
We added some logging statements to the page, and discovered something quite odd. The page ceases to execute right in the middle of a log statement. No exceptions, just up and dies.
Here is the code-behind:
[code]....
I assume if there was a error in the transmission of the file that either an exception would be thrown from the reader.ReadToEnd() line. And if not an exception, I would expect the page processing to continue but that I may only receive part of the file (in which case it should log something).
The logging statement is only accessing a string variable, and it's inside a try-catch. NLog is the logging component we use, and we access that through the facade provided by the Simple Logging Facade project on Codeplex. So, we trust the logging component to be more or less bulletproof - we certainly don't see anything in our usage of it here that should be causing problems.
Why on earth could this page just up and stop processing like this?
The fact that we get a half-finished logging statement seems to point towards an error being swallowed in the logging system - but that just seems so unlikely - and we have NLog's internal logging on and it is not reporting any problems.

I am writing something that will use my database to generate/populate some Word/Excel Template Documents for Contracts. These will be written to a directory on my server that I want my user to be able to have access to to download these contracts from. I was thinking a GridView with a TemplateField with a Hyperlink in it for simplicity's sake.

My question is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/194579/how-to-detect-when-a-user-has-successfully-finished-downloading-a-file-in-php but I have to do the same using IIS, ASP.NET and C#.
None of the methods in the HttpResponse class provide feedback if the data was sent or not, TransmitFile just does its job (or not) and does not provide any means of knowing the result.I was thinking of using the .Filter property but then again, the filter is based on the HttpResponseStream which does also not provide any feedback.

I am downloading a file from a remote location to my local machine. The paths I am using are saved in web.config and are in following format:
<add key="FileFolder" value="Files/"/>
<add key="LocalFileFolder" value="D:REAL" />
the code I am using to download is:
CreateDirectoryIfDoesNotExist();
WebClient webClient = new WebClient(); [code]...
When i deploy it on the server; and run my program, i get a message saying that download has completed successfully. But the problem is that the file is downloaded on the server machine in the filefolder (LocalFileFolder). I want it to be downloaded on the local machine. What is it that I am doing wrong?

I have an aspx website and I'd like to upload a file to it. The file is being processed later, so I need to support some extra information with it.
This is the website I have to far:
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="Upload.aspx.cs" Inherits="ABC.Web.Upload" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head runat="server">
<title></title>
</head>
<body>
<form id="Form1" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data" runat="server">
<input type="file" id="File1" name="File1" runat="server" />
<input type="text" id="FileId" name="FileId" runat="server" />
<input type="submit" id="Submit1" value="Upload" runat="server" />
</form>
</body>
</html>
This (and the code behind) works very well when using a browser and clicking through the form. But I want to upload the file using the WebClient from C# code. I don't have to use the WebClient. I can also modify the upload.aspx to suit me, there is no requirement that it works from a browser, but this is the only example I've got working.
Looking at fiddler (I just started using it, so I probably have missed it) I could not figure out how I would create such a request from code.
At the moment when using the WebClient I am specifying the address and the local filename. I have a breakpoint in the code behind in my website but the File1 and FileId are not set (as expected).
How do I have to modify the website and how do I have to use the WebClient to get the upload working?
EDIT: Just found out about the Request.Files, that will give me the file, but how about the other fields?

The user click on a LinkButton, and the page does a PostBack. But I also need to prompt a file download to the user at the same time.
In order to do that, I did this on the LinkButton
lnkPrint.Attributes.Add("onclick", "window.open('Download.ashx?type=x')");
The Download.ashx Http Handler generates the file (Content-Type : application/pdf), and if I click on my LinkButton, it does PostBack and download the file after showing a popup... But I can't manage to close this popup automatically.
I tried some methods
settimeout('self.close()',1000) after the download Setting a RegisterStartupScript on the LinkButton.Command, to trigger the download after the postback, but IE6 prompts a warning that disturbs my users
So, none of these methods seems to work fine.
So, my question is : Is there a way to make the popup instantly disappear, or is there a means to make the page download the file AND postback at the same time ?
PS : I thought of the Your download will begin shortly method, but I'm afraid I'll have the same issues as before with the RegisterStartupScript...

I put together a download script after some wonderful help from stack overflow the other day. However I've now found that after the file has been downloaded I need to reload the page to get rid of the progress template on the aspx page. The code to remove the template worked before I added in the download code.
Code to remove progress template: upFinanceMasterScreen.Update();
I've tried calling putting this before and after the redirect to the IHttpHandler
Response.Redirect("Download.ashx?ReportName=" + "RequestingTPNLeagueTable.pdf");
[code]...

Referencing my Earlier Question, regarding downloading a file from a server and handling exceptions properly. I am positive that I had this solved, then in classic programming fashion, returned days later to frustratingly find it broken
Updated code:
private static void GoGetIt(HttpContext context)
{
var directoryInfoOfWhereTheDirectoryFullOfFilesShouldBe = new FileInfo(......); [code]....
This was working fine, and returning the zip, otherwise if the file didn't exist returning 404. Then on the client side I could handle this:
public bool Download()
{
try
{
using (var client = new WebClient()) [code]....
But the problem now is two things.
1) I get System.Threading.ThreadAbortException: Thread was being aborted in the server side try-catch block. Usually this was just a file not found exception. I have no idea what or why that new exception is throwing?
2) Now that a different exception is throwing on the server side instead of the file not found, it would seem I can't use this set up for the application, because back on client side, any exception is assumed to be filenotfound.]

In my asp .net project, my main page receives URL as a parameter I need to download internally and then process it. I know that I can use WebClient's DownloadFile method however I want to avoid malicious user from giving a url to a huge file, which will unnecessary traffic from my server. In order to avoid this, I'm looking for a solution to set maximum file size that DownloadFile will download.

I am trying to accomplish something that websites like CNET do for downloading.
When a button on a page is clicked I want the user to be taken to a page..called download.aspx, the whole page is displayed with information
like "your download is starting..." and then the file is presented to be download.
What I did.
In my main page on the button click event...I do a Response.Redirect("download.aspx"); and in the download.aspx page
load event I present a Response.TransmitFile("myfile.exe");
This doesnt work because the download.aspx is NOT rendered untill the whole download is finished.
