Performance-impact Of Empty Page_Load() Methods?

Mar 23, 2011

When adding a new page or user control to an ASP.NET webforms application, the code-behind class contains an empty Page_Load() event handler:

public partial class Default : System.Web.UI.Page
{
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
}
}

I have an existing web app, where many pages and controls still contain these empty event handlers (they are not used).

Question: Is there any performance impact due to these empty event handlers and should they therefore be removed from all pages and controls?

Performance Impact Using Culture Invariant Resources?

Apr 19, 2010

I would like to know the performance impact of using the culture invariant resources instead of culture specific ones.

For example, we plan to deploy a website and not have any en-US resources. This is because our culture invariant resources are always identical to the en-US resources.

Does Putting Multiple Classes In One File Impact Performance

Feb 17, 2011

Does putting multiple classes in one file impact performance? Has anyone had any experience with this.

I've read various discussions around application structure and logic of where code can be found with regard to design best practice but little has been said as whether there is any negative/positive/neutral impact on performance.

Make AJAX Redirects - Page_Load Methods In .aspx And In An .ascx ?

Jan 5, 2010

Ok, this is a bit different scenario. I guess I would have to think about doing it this way sort of with MVC anyway if we were actually using MVC...but we're not at the moment.So I've got and .aspx page. In that .aspx page is a user control (.ascx). And in that user control is a custom control (.cs).

The custom control has a repeater in it. So I'm showing a list of items on that .aspx through the .ascx's custom control. For each item in the repeater is a button. It's just a hyperlink, just a regular on my page When you click that button, it redirects to whatever page you're on. Since the custom control never knows what your parent .aspx page is, I'm doing a redirect to the self .aspx by doing a Response.Redirect(Request.Path). So that way it always redirects to whatever .aspx is using that user control and custom control.

So after it redirects to self, I check the querystring in the page_load of whatever .aspx is using it. If the value is true, then I handle it however the .aspx wants to. In this case when it's true, I call a method in the code behind of my .aspx that handles the action for the button. For example lets say that button was "Add to Shopping Cart", the .aspx handles that action and calls a AddToCart method in the .aspx.cs.

I'm not using an ASP.NET control for the actual hyperlink and button because I just don't need it and in my particular case I'm using a user control and a custom server control.For this instance, I had some issue where I didn't wnat to use an ASP.NET control...I forget why but the point is, no this is what it is.

So with that, I'm trying to figure out how I can apply some AJAX here call to call that method instead. I still need to somehow redirect again back to the same page like I'm doing...I'm doing the redirect in that method after all the logic at the end. I am redirecting again back to the same page, because I need my Page_Load methods in my .aspx and also in an .ascx to still fire off after that method is completed.So I am not sure where to start on this. Let me go through this once again:

Custom control has a repeater in it and in the repeater, each item has a standard HTML hyperlink (non ASP.NET control) which wraps a standard image tag (image is a button)User control contains the custom control The .aspx page contains the user control User clicks the butt on and hyperlink redirects them to the parent .aspx page that is using this custom control...so it callsResponse.Redirect(Request.Path)

In the code-behind of this .aspx, in my page_load I check a querystring flag to see if I performed that action..meaning user clicked that button. For example one of the querystring params is "AddItem" and another querystring param is "itemID". If movedItem is true, then I fire off a method called MoveItem(int itemID) Method MoveItem is called Method MoveItem redirects again back to this same .aspx using Response.Redirect(Request.Path).. this is so that the page load is hit again as well as my .ascx page load is hit. Because in both those page loads, I rebind a repeater so I can show the latest state of the lists. I call a method in my .aspx page_load which rebinds a grid and then page_load in my .ascx also calls another method which rebinds some other list

Databinding - Gridview Paging Does Not Work If The Grid Is Not Loaded During Page_load. Tried All Methods

Oct 26, 2010

I have a gridview which I load with data on click of a button. For some reason the paging did not work. The paging number shows up but clicking on page # 2, 3 or 4 does not take you anywhere. the grid just disappears on clicking them. right after that when i click the button to generate the grid, the grid came up this time the gird is on page 2 or 3 instead of 1.

I have the following on page_indexing properly.

Protected Sub GV_Document_Hide_PageIndexChanging(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewPageEventArgs) Handles GV_PSIDocument_Hide.PageIndexChanging
GV_Document_Hide.PageIndex = e.NewPageIndex
End Sub

I even tried by adding the databind() code inside the pageindexchanging as suggested in other threads but that didn't make any difference.

The only way I could get this going was by populating/loading the grid on page_load. I have to assign datasource & databind it every time irrespective of even postbacks. I tried IsNotpostback then the paging failed again Why does gridview needs loading on page_load every time if the paging needs to work properly?

I think the issue is for the DB server. How can we rectify the DB performance while insertion and Is there any other cause for this permance issue?

Using Extension Methods In Static Methods On Extended Classes?

Aug 16, 2010

I have an extension method as follows:

public static class PageExtensions
{
public static int GetUserId(this Page targetPage)
{
var user = Membership.GetUser(targetPage.User.Identity.Name);
return (int)user.ProviderUserKey;
}
}

Now in a page I need to use this method in a static WebMethod, so I have added another 'extension method' to PageExtensions:

public static int GetUserId()
{
return (int)Membership.GetUser(HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name).ProviderUserKey;
}

and I call it as follows in my WebMethod: PageExtensions.GetUserId()

Deploy Website To Production With Minimal Impact To Users

Dec 8, 2010

I'm trying to find the best server architecture solution to deploy monthly updates to an Asp.net external public facing website. What I'm looking for are ways to release a new version of a website with minimal impact to users. Besides deploying the standard way (ie. stop IIS, copy new website over existing website, start IIS), what are some "better" solutions for deployment out there? It would be nice if they kept their session and didn't have to see a "Website under maintenance" message during the update. My server configuration

We have 2 IIS web servers (2003) and are trying to figure out the best way to utilize them for deployments. My first thought was to update the non-active web server with the latest release. Then to gracefully point the web traffic to that server with minimal impact to users (best case, the user doesn't lose his session). How would you go about "repointing" the web traffic from server 1 to server 2? Changing firewall NAT? Changing DNS records? Some other way?? We need to be able to test the live site immediately after we release the new changes (duh). BTW, we are using nant and cruise control to automate the builds, and a custom web service to deploy the build to production. So it's all automated with the click of a button. Could a better solution be achieved using a 3rd server? If so how?

Security :: Not Extending MembershipProvider Class And Putting All This Methods In Some Unique Class And Call Its Methods Then?

Sep 16, 2010

I am beginner in web applications development. I started one little project and host it on source forge "https://homoco.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/homoco". And I started implementing authentication in this application to learn how it works. From my experience people never use out of the box things so I want to implement this stuff alone (like in real world projects). So some questions:

1) Is there any reason to use membership out of the box? To use database table schema, stored procedures etc. that tool generate for developer. I think that this lower control over code and I decided to implement it my self. I don't know if I am right.

2) Is my approach in this demo project good or bad (if someone have time I like to do just a little code review)? I created database based on business rules. Not using database schema that membership provider require. Extend "MembershipProvider" class to satisfy my needs. Implement queries to database myself.

3) Now, this question is a little wired but I have to ask it. If we make custom Membership Provider and do sql queries alone, implement all MembershipProvider class methods ourselves, and in application use Membership.blabla() why is this approach different from not extending MembershipProvider class and putting all this methods in some unique class and call its methods then? I hope that someone understand what I ask here.

I am sorry for three questions, but I really trying to find the best way to implement this feature in my demo project like it is a real world application.

C# - Hide Empty Columns In A Gridview Without Knowing Which Will Be Empty?

Mar 4, 2011

I am working with a gridview that pulls data from a SQL database based on selections in dropdown lists. The source table has six columns for attributes of the selection, but depending on what is chosen, there could be anywhere from one to six of those that are empty (all null values). When the column is empty, I would like to have it hidden so the page is less clunky and confusing.

I've searched around for an answer for the past couple days, but what I have found so far is either related to hiding columns that you know are empty which I will not know or removing them in the SQL code which I think doesn't work if the column is called for in the gridview code and doesn't exist in the query.
