Is there a way write code in web.config file using preprocessed function. Say I created environment variables like %Temp%, %WINDIR%. order to read these I can use the configurationManager class. But I dont want to use it. I woudl like to use a preprocessed function similar to timeStampPattern="{timestamp(local)}". Here timestamp(local) retrieves the value directly. So in a similar way can i read the environment variables %temp% and %windir% using preprocessed function if any exists?

if using session variables to store and retrieve information is a bad practice? Let me give you some background:
I am developing a site for a friend of mine, and his site is hosted by Go-Daddy. My feeling is that Go-Daddy is not the best place to host a .NET site, but it is what it is.
After the first version of the site was published and people started using it, users immediately started having session time-out problems and null exceptions when referencing session variables. I researched everything I could and tried everything I could think to do, but I just could not correct the issue.
Then, while doing some testing, I discovered that users weren't individually timing-out and losing their session information, but, rather, all users where timing out at exactly the same time, regardless of how long they had been logged in or what they were doing. So, for whatever reason, the server was just dumping all sessions at random intervals.
At this point I needed to move on with the project so I added a number of cookies to replace the session variables, and everything began working properly.
in a hosted environment, should I avoid using session variables? Is it as problamatic as my research and experience would indicate, or is this simply due to the fact that I am working with a poor hosting company in Go-Daddy?

I have an intranet ASP.NET web application in which I need to get the IP of the client's machine. I do this vis the following code:
HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables.Item("REMOTE_HOST")
It used to work when my ASP.NET site was only hosted on a single server. However once we got the load balancer installed and migrated our apps to a web farm, the code above returns the IP of the Load Balancer device and not of the client anymore.
I am working with the networking folks to determine what can be configured differently with the load balancer, but in the meantime I was wondering if there was another way I could get the client's IP other than using that IIS Server Variable?

We have had complaints of users losing data that they entered in textboxes in our ASP.NET 2.0 web application. Users are authenticated using Web Single Sign On method. My boss would like to save the client data in a file on their local disk in case they lose connectivity. I know this is not allowed with the default security of ASP.NET.
Would it be possible to programmatically change the ACL permissions for the NETWORK SERVICE account to access the isolated storage folder on the logged in user's local disk? Is there a better way to achieve this goal of persisting user data to a file?

I am having a scenario, where i need to decode ASP.NET FormsAuthentication Cookie in other language to accomplish Single Sign-On.
I am having a ASP.NET website, that also has WCF Authentication service. But I have just come know that even Java and PHP Application are also going to use my Authentication Gateway to authenticate user and so enable Single Sing-On.
I am done with the same in .NET application but to perform same in non-.NET techs, I need to decode FormsAuthentication Cookie of browser. FormsAuthentication Cookie are Encrypted so there must exist a algorithm that can decode it or a kind of dll that I can load in Java and read it.

Very cool.I have been reading about the data annotations validation attributes that can be set on the view model properties.It's cool but I have a scenario where I need to determine at runtime whether one of the property is required or not.How can I achieve this ? I want to have client side validation enabled too.

I'm using one application but have multiple providers in my web.config for memberships, roles and profiles to allow my application to be used by different groups of users who need to connect to different databases.
This means I'm having to change the membership, role and profile providers on-the-fly in my code-behind files. So far I've taken care of the membership and roles a bit like this:
[Code]....
However, I'm having trouble finding out how to do the same sort of thing for Profiles. I've looked at ProfileProvider and ProfileManager but I can't work it out how to access my the profile property that I've created in my web.config file called "ScreenSize". Normally you would just write Profile.ScreenSize to read or write to the property.

By external config files, I mean .config files other than web.config. I've seen all the examples on how to edit web.config at runtime, but I want to edit a config file referenced by a configSource for appSettings. I want to modify only the external file and I will handle the app recycle.
I would like to use a built-in class to deal with the edits, but if the only option is a manual File open/parse, etc, then sobeit.
The general behind all this being a Settings page that is viewed at app startup, user sets their particulars and then saves the changes, then the real app starts up. quick and easy install app/configure page, so I'd like to leverage .config if at all possible.
FOLLOWUP - Quick Snippet to use XmlDocument to change an appSetting key value:
string path = Server.MapPath("~/my.config");
XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument();
doc.Load(path);
XmlNode node = doc.SelectSingleNode("/appSettings/add[@key='myKey']");
node.Attributes[1].Value = "myVal";
XmlTextWriter writer = new XmlTextWriter(path, null);
writer.Formatting = Formatting.Indented;
doc.WriteTo(writer);
writer.Flush();
writer.Close();

Here is the setup: I programmatically populate my gridview using LINQ to SQL query. Then I enter the edit mode and want to replace some standard TextBox controls with DropDownLists like this:
[Code]....
At this moment I have my gridview showing standard textbox control and new DDList control (in the Column 1).
The problem is -- I cant read the value from DDList in the RowUpdating method. It seems like DDList control is not in the GridView1.Rows.Item(0).Cells(1).Controls collection. RowUpdating method sees only standard TextBox control and can read it's value.

I'd like to write and read TCP Streams directly without any modifications by ASP or IIS. Is this possible?
Edit: Goal is to provide communication between a program and a server. Data exchange between them is less then 25 bytes per connection (in default case). So Headers will cause more traffic then the real data. I need to use ASP.Net because the owner of the server will not let me execute my programs.

I would like to know your libraries recommendations to read and write Excel applications on ASP .NET website. I have tried GemBox and NPOI, because they don't required Excel to be installed on the server, but they have some limitations on handling Excel files that are marked to read only.
