SQL Server :: Change Database Fields Automatically According To Date?
Aug 29, 2010
I'm currently developing a software application for my client. Part of the project is to keep track of his stock's shipping status. The client must insert the stock's pick-up date, expected time of departure (ETD) and expected time of arrival (ETA). The stocks will be called out using Grid View and the status, being one of the keys of the database, will be shown. Before the current date reaches pick-up date, the status must show "in warehouse", and after the current date reaches pick-up date and is before ETD, status must show that its "on the way to the port", and after ETD and before ETA, "in freight", and finally after ETA, "arrived". What datatype should I use for the database and where should I program it so that it changes automatically accordingly ?

I got an excel spreadsheet (will have tons eventually) that have "Start Date" and "End Date" columns, with a format of "dd/mm/yyyy".For time being, I just want to import these to a temporary table in my database, and use the SQL Server Import/Export wizards.
Now this wizard import the the above fields as nvarchar, instead of date or datetime (not sure which would be better?).I tried to convert the columns to datetime after importing, but this is not allowed (Saving changes is not permitted. The changes you made require that the following tables to be dropped and re-created, ......).
So I deleted the temporary table, and ran the wizard again, this time trying to edit the mappings and specify the two fields to be date times, but this also fails.I also fiddled around with convert and cast, but always end up getting "Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string." errors.
I looked myself skew, and are pretty sure all the fields in the excel sheet do have values, and are in the "dd/mm/yyyy" format.(I've been absent from SQL for a long long time!)

I have created an web based application through which the users can change the server (where the web application is hosted) IPAddress. The problem is that, once i have changed the IPAddress to a new IPAddress, Response.Redirect("MyHome.aspx") is not working any more. I have also tried to redirect the user to the newly updated address but even it doesn't do the trick. No page found message appears after some time. For example: The url while the web application runs in IIS is : http://192.168.0.65/WebDemo/Default.aspx after changing the IPAddress to 192.168.0.66 and redirecting it with the Response.Redirect() method the http://192.168.0.65 is not accessible.Any idea of achieving this task of changing IPAddress of the server and doing an automatic redirect to the newly assigned IPAddress,

Assume that a model has a datetime datatype.
So in view there will be a blank field ask you to input datetime.
Is there a way to fill this HTML field with today's date/datetime as default value?

I have taken over development of a asp.net 3.5, c#, MSSQL website, which I did not create.
There is a form on the website which adds all kinds of information into my SQL database. I have added two fields to the database, two corresponding extra form questions and added to the c# code behind so that these new fields are treated in exactly the same way as the existing ones.
I am therefore completely stumped as to why those two fields aren't populated in the database when I submit the form.
No page errors or anything, it's just the fields remain empty when the other pre-existing ones are populated just fine.
Is there something obvious I'm missing - for example is there a setting in the database I'm not enabling to allow the two new fields to be written to by my c# file?
I was not a programmer before this, I'm just picking it all up as I go along.

I have an ASP.NET project which has already some custom fields in it's web.config file. I've added in it three more fields and used them in my changes, and it's working great.
But where it needs to be used, there aren't these thre fields in the web.config (this was expected, I've just added by hand for tests and developing).
How do I check the existance of fields in web.config, and in case of not finding it, how do I add it permanently to the web.config ?

I'm using MVC 2 with some Models from a LinqToSql project that I built. I see that when I post back to a Controller Action after editing a form that has a DateTime field from the Model, the MVC Html.ValidationMessageFor() helper will nicely display an error beside the Date text box. This seems to happen automatically when the you test ModelState.IsValid() in the Controller Action, as if the MVC model binding automatically knows that the DateTime field cannot be empty.
My question is... I have some other string fields in these LinqToSql generated classes that are Not-Nullable (marked as Not Nullable in Sql Server which passes thourgh to the LinqToSql generated classes), so why doesn't Mr. MVC pick up on those as well and display a "Required" message in the ValidationMessageFor() placeholders I have added for those fields?
Sure, I have successfully added the MetadataType(typeof<t>) buddy classes to cover these Non-nullable string fields, but it sure does seem redundant to add all this metadata in buddy classes when the LinqToSql generated classes already contain enough info that MVC could sniff out. It MVC validation works with DateTime automatically, why not these Not-nullable fields too?

I have got the following exception when try to select data from SQL Server or inserting data in in with a C# windows application. I am passing the date in where clause of select query in single quotes like this '16/03/2011' The exception message is shown below:
The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Is there any perfect solution for inserting and selecting date from sqlserver database irrelevant to the operating system. i.e. that works on both Italian and English OS.

I have a simple web form that takes data inputted by a user online but I can't get the date field formatted so it can allow UK short date format to be entered. I need to allow dates to be entered like this: dd/mm/yyyy but currently if I enter the UK format date 25/02/2011 I get an error, as the field is in US format (mm/dd/yyyy).
It's a SQL database created from within MS Visual Web Developer 2010, and I'm a SQL newbie.
How do I change the date format to UK so UK format dates can be accepted?
