C# - Insert And Select Date From SQL Server Database?

I have got the following exception when try to select data from SQL Server or inserting data in in with a C# windows application. I am passing the date in where clause of select query in single quotes like this '16/03/2011' The exception message is shown below:
The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Is there any perfect solution for inserting and selecting date from sqlserver database irrelevant to the operating system. i.e. that works on both Italian and English OS.
et me know which control is used to insert date of birth in to sql server database and it saved in which format(as date or datetime).If it is datetime then how to convert as date.
I have some issues about retrieveing and storing date information to my database (ms sql server 2005).My data column is a DateTime, and i have set my web.config globalization culture is set to "en-gb"
When i retrieve date from the datebase it appears as dd/MM/yy, that's fine. But i cannot insert a new date as same format?! It will only accept MM/dd/yy or yy/mm/dd.Right now i'm using this code to correct the error:

How should i insert null values into a database. I have a table with logentries (tblLog) for items (tblItem) (one-to-many relationship). How can I select say the id and date for the latest logentry when I select a record from the tblItems table? I am unsure on how to perform this task, what i need to do is make a gallery with tagging. I need this as it is a requirement for the project. Each user will have there own gallery and be able to upload and delete images from there gallery. I already know how to insert and select images from a database. I will then display the gallery using a data repeator with paging, I am sure i can google an article for data repeator with paging.
My challenge is, when the user wants to save a image to there gallery, he must 1st upload the image and then i must some how display the image, when the image is displayed, i will have a text box where they can add tags, this textbox will save in the tag table for that user_id, picture_id and the tag will have an id also. I am unsure on how to do this When he clicks save, i wanna insert the image into the table, and the tag. If he does not click save, then nothing should be saved. Now the 2nd part.

I have this select statement which joins two tables and produces one column as its result. What I'm figuring out is how to add this data into another table as a new column. The output of the select statement and the table I'm going to transfer the data to has the same number of rows. Should I put it first in a temporary table? This column shouldn't allow nulls also.
