Sep 19, 2010I have created normalised data tables to hold look up information (such as venues, players, teams etc) and want to dynamically update the 'matches' data table (my transactions) using webpages instead of running SQL queries.
What I want to do is select a name from a drop down list and then post the relevant ID associated with that name to my 'matches' table. At the moment I can only link to the value in the drop down list, i.e. the name which is incompatible with the validation which expects a primary key integer.
I'm sure this problem is a fairly common one but I haven't found the right answer on any of the tutorials or blogs, all of them assume that the data is de-normalised or describe things in more technical ways than I can yet understand. If anyone can point me to a 'how to article' or tell me what I am doing wrong, I would be grateful.

Mar 17, 2011I've just taken over looking after a website and well to be honest the way it's been put together is not the best, but I have to make do as the client does not have the money to make major changes.Anyway currently there is data stored in a MsSQL database and some in an XML file. The xml file does have a ContentID attribute which matches the ContentID in a table.Not really done much with XML as I tend to use a database and LINQ.What would be the best way to tie these two together so I could output the results in a gridview for example.

Aug 22, 2010I created a ASP.NET project under Visual Web Developer 2008. Under that project I had a Database (along with ASPNETDB.MDF) which has about 3/4 tables (I had SQL server 2008). Everything was working fine (like insert, delete, etc.). And I was able to view the tables in database explorer view.
Then I had to format my computer for some reason and I copied the whole project in a USB drive and then after formatting the computer I copied the folder and tried to open it in Visual Web Developer (now I have VWD 2010). I can see the both Database under App_Data folder (ASPNETDB.mdf and the DB I created). ASPNETDB has all the tables and data as expected. But I do not see the tables under the DB I created.

Jun 30, 2010I am using ASP.Net 4.0/Visual Studio 2010. However, I think it would be the same if it was ASP.Net/VB.Net 3.5. I am inserting three form filed values into a database table. I have placed a LoginName Control on the page and the login name is properly displaying. I am using forms Authentication and it is set up properly in the web config file. I simply want to insert the logged in username value into the database table so I can track who created the records. I am happy to be able to insert the UnserName or the UserID value. I assume both of the values are derived out of the aspnet_Users table. Being able to insert either one would be fine but I believe UserID would be better because it will always be unique.
