Security :: Get Remote User From A Non-domain IIS Server?
Jan 27, 2011
Can I get who the remote user is on IIS Server that is not part of the domain without challenging/prompting the user? I am thinking not, but wanted to see if anyone had a different answer. I added the server to my intranet zone but that didn't cause IE to send any user information. Or maybe it did but since the IIS server is not part of that domain it can't do anything with the user information. I am looking at the ServerVariables in the Request object.

I am trying to fetch a page from a remote php web appln in a different domain. The page contains a chart image which I need to display in my web app. The chart image is dynamically generated using jquery.
Now the remote web app needs to authenticate myself as user i.e username of my machine. So the first time I made a request for its first page it asked for my username and password in the browser ( I.E). From next time it doesn't ask for my username and password and opens the first page.My username was added to the user DB and probably it stores my IP or computer name.Then the chart page also opens in the browser(I.E).
After some time if I try to open the chart page it comes up with some messages and junk values.
But if I again open the first page and then the chart page in the browser it opens up with the proper chart image. So everytime I need to access the chart image I need to authenticate first by opening the first page since the session timeout for authentication is not known. The above process which was happening in browser has to be replicated in my code (C#) in my web app. Now for authenticating myself i.e myusername to the remote appln I write the code below but all I get is some messages and junk values. so how do I authenticate and then access this chart page.

I have a machine in MyDomain on which i have deployed the website and file server as virtual directory. For file server i have created an application pool with identity as UserName and Password. And file server directory setting as Integrated Windows Authentication instead of Anonymous Access. When i am accessing file server from outside the domain then it is asking for user name password. After providing the credentials it open the file. Now i am trying to access the file server from wbsite using the machine outside the domain.Before accessing i am impersonating the current user with user which is present in identity. But after redirecting to the file server url it is again asking the credntial. why it is asking the credential if i have already impersonated the user.

I have an Asp.net 3.5 xml web service that I created using the file new website within Visual Studio 2008. I can install and run the web service on a remote server using a web setup project after adding the necessary entries to the web.config file. The problem currently is that the xml web service needs to be configured to use a domain name and not a server name. My coworker has not been able to configure the virtual directory to use a domain name and work successfully. The web service returns a site under construction error.

All I'm trying to do is pull the current user's login name from Active Directory. I've tried User.Identity.Name.ToString, which returned nothing at all. I tried Environment.UserName.ToString, Which returned "NETWORK SERVICE" which is not the firstname.lastname username that I was expecting.

Im working on an application that has a login section that accepts a username and password. On successful login a userid is returned and encrypted with TripleDesKey. The user details are then stored in a session object. We already have a class library that performs encryption and decryption using a key in the web.config file. I basically want to be able to access the user details of the currently logged in user in a page accessed from the main site that may be in a different domain, but is effectively part of the same site, so I wont have access to the session object from the main site. so basically a user logs in, I have the user details stored in a session object, I also have access to the encrypted userid also in a session object. If a user then clicks a link to another page that is in a different domain, how do I persist the userID?
I suppose I could I tag the encrypted userid to the querystring, but security could be an issue here (even though the id is encrypted, someone could still modify it)

We are using IIS6 and .Net Framework 2.0 for our intranet with Windows and Digest Authentication . We have 2 domains that have access to this intranet. I suddenly have the need to display slightly different content for users from Domain A. The changes are rather trivial (text on a label and and image in a header) but important to our stakeholders.

I want to make my domain administrators the administrators to my web application so that they are the only ones that can change content. All other users would simply be able to read the material. I am relatively new to web apps and I can not seem to find what I am looking for anywhere on the net.

Two users using the same machine, same browser.
User 1 logs in the domain.
User 1 changes some data without saving it.
User 2 logs in the domain in a separate tab.
User 1 switches back to his tab and saves the data.
User 1 actually saved the data into User 2!!
This is caused by the following mechanism:
Different tabs in the same browser seems to share the same session id. We are storing user auth in cookie and the cookie is shared between tabs (same domain)
Therefore, when User 1 request to save, it is recognized as User 2 since the cookie has been updated to User 2.
So I'm wondering if there's any other methods to prevent this from happening, other than:
1. Use cookieless session so the session is embedded in uri.
2. Always include a hidden field in page to indicate which user owns the page.

filetoread = Server.MapPath("\servernamesharefile.csv")
filestream = File.OpenText(filetoread)
readcontents = filestream.ReadToEnd()
It works fine if I put the file in the local directory and use "filetoread = Server.MapPath("file.csv")", but won't do it over the UNC path.I'm guessing the problem is security related but can't find any info related to it, do I need to somehow specify a username/password somewhere ?

I have a batch file on another server on a different domain or network that I need to run from an ASP page. I found a simple enough script that opens a CMD prompt, goes to the location of the batch and runs it. If everything is on the same machine, it runs fine.
The issue I've run into now is that the batch file is on a file server and the ASP page is on a IIS server. The File server is on a internal network (separate domain) and the IIS server is on an external network (or different domain), both servers are hosted here.
When I try it and look at the event logs I can see a failure audit and its trying to login with the machine name.

My web application is on a Webserver that is in a DMZ .
the web application must save on the server in LAN some files, but the webserver cannot access the file server because has no right to access. i wouldn't create an account for the web server, but i would that any time the application has to upload a file onto the file server make a connection that encapsulate credentials, then the upload starts ,finally the connection closes.
Is possible with some Objects to do this type of work?

this is a bit of a strange one. have my front page of my intranet site and I am trying to pull an RSS feed from a subdirectory forum.
Root
Default.aspx
--->Forum
--->Rssfeed.aspx
On my default.aspx I can pull RSS Feeds from the BBC or any other external website so my code is working fine but when I try and pull a RSS feed from my local server I get "The remote server returned an error: (401) Unaithorized".Now, if I go to the Forum directory within IIS and change the directory secutiry from "Integrated Windows Authentication" to "Enable anonymous access" the RSS comes through to the front page without any errors, however, the forum requires "Integrated Windows Authentication" to be enable to that my users can post on the forum. If I turn both on then Windows authentication is still ignored for my users when they visit the forum.I have hardcoded my credentials in to the Default.aspx.cs to see if that helps but I still get Unauthorized message.My code is here:
[Code]....
As you can see I have tried a couple of different ways to get the credentials to work, it just seems to ignore my credentials and I have full admin access to the server and when I visit the forum it picks up my username.

A site that utilizes Windows Authentication.It accesses the LOGON_USER variable to pull the domain and user.It works fine in the development environment.It works fine on one of my servers.We are in the process of setting up a new server for this application to be hosted on.When I setup the new server,the LOGON_USER is always empty for remote computers.Windows Auth is turned on.I have tried it with Anonymous Access on (how the current server is setup) and also off.If I remote on to the server and run the application locally,LOGON_USER is filled.When I access the site via IE from a remote machine,it prompts three times and then fails.Even if I key in credentials in the Windows prompt.nothing

My feeling says it's not posible but anyway I am curious if there is at least a workaround for accomplish this.Basically I am working at my client site and my machine is not connected to the domain.What I want to do is running a web application locally under a domain account, and using the webdev server.The webapp uses the default authentication, windows authentication that is.I tried using impersonation with domainuser & password but I got the following error Could not create Windows user token from the credentials specified in the config file. Error from the operating system 'Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.I have to mention that the username and the password are correct.

There is one page which is actually a streaming to The Axis IP camera which spits MJPEG output.It requires user to log in with the user name/password promp on browser .I am using this stream to show video directly on a web page.It shows video correctly but asks user to provide correct user name and password set for the camera,I tried to logging in to this camera on server side using HTTP requests and then I realized I authenticated server request not the browser the end user is using.
So what I want is a method server side or client side, that can allow me to log-in to camera automatically when my end-users visit this page.I am using asp.net with c# 2005

I have a domain: http://www.mydomain.com. This domain is redirected to http://mydomain.anotherDomain.com.
I user forms authorization, so when the user navigates to Default.aspx he is redirected to Login.aspx. Pretty standard stuff.
On FireFox the user can log in on both on http://www.mydomain.com and http://mydomain.anotherDomain.com.
But with Explorer http://www.mydomain.com doesn't work. I only get the Login.aspx page.
Can it have anything to do with that on http://www.mydomain.com I can't see the filename ('Default.aspx', 'Login.aspx')? How can I enable so the filename is included in the redirected domain?
