Security :: .net Cannot Access Network Folders?
Oct 26, 2010
I have a few computers (with Vista Business OS) connected in a private network. A C#.NET application running on one computer is currently able to access the network shared folders without problems. However, I am trying to get an ASP.NET application on that computer to access the same folders but I am getting "Access denied" errors. I added NETWORK SERVICE to all the shared folders' security (with full control) but it still gives the same errors.

I have a web app were every user has its own folder so that they can store documents. What i would like to do is protect a user's folder so that only the owner can access it.
Example:
Username: ricky
Folder: ~/Files/ricky/ --> Ricky can access his folder but can't access Diana's
Username: diana
Folder: ~/Files/diana/ --> Diana can access her folder but can't access Ricky's
I'm using membership provider for the user authentication.

i developed an asp.net(2.0) applicaions which contains the attachments of the clients . these attachments are saved in the shared folder and retrive the file when the user requests.if i maintain the application and the shared folders in the same system it will work properly.if i maintain the application in one server and the file folder in the other server i face a lot of security issus like1.Access Denied2.Couldnot find the part of the path......for this i made an common account for the application server and the file server and also set impersonation to true.Even the i got the couldnot find the part of the path error.i already gave the everyone with full control to the shared folder and i added the common account and gave it to full controlIs there is any alternate for the save and retrive the files to and from the shared folder.

I'm using user membership and roles. Below is my web.config for subfolder restriction.
[Code]....
The way I have above, no one can access this folder, mySub, except Administrators, Editors, and Members. However, here's what I want. I want to allow all and any user to the default.aspx page of this mySub folder and denied any other pages if they're not Administrators, Editors, and Members. One last thing, also denied access to addWord.aspx if they're not Administrators and Editors. I know I can list all the pages and give them various permission but I do not want to list all the pages. What's the best and easist way to accomplish this?

I wrote a web service sometime back, and uploaded to one of our network Server's IIS. The webservice needs to access a network folder, which was working perfectly fine till a month ago. Now, when we use the webservice in our .Net application, it fails with the exception message "Access to the path '\<networkMachine ><Folder >' was denied" (may be some group policies changed). But when I run the webservice from my local machine's Visual Studio debugger, it can access that folder. What could be different on the server's IIS w.r.t. my service? Why was it able to access the network folder before but not now? Please note that I can manually access that shared network folder from my machine, and also when I remote desktop to that <networkMachine> from windows explorer.
I saw in the task manager on the server that the IIS process w3wp.exe is running under 'NETWORK SERVICE' account. Though the network folder is not shared specifically with this account, but that has given read & execute access to 'Everyone'. Then what is the problem that it cannot access the folder. By accessing I mean creating a 'DirectoryInfo' object of the path '\<networkMachine ><Folder >' and reading all the subfolders -
just read.

If you use anonymous access + impersonation of a windows domain account to access a file on a network share, is the password sent in clear text?

I've been researching and I've spent pratically all day on this. Here's my issue. The website uses forms authentication that we authenticate against active directory. I've been attempting to access files we have on a network share and push them down to the user (when they request them) in an http response. I keep getting "Access to the path <unc path> is denied".
Here's the code:
[Code]....
Things I've tried:1) When I add the "Computer" to the permissions of the folder it works and I dont even need to emulate a user (essentially just commenting out this code), but I'm not sure we want to explicitly give the computer access to some of our network shares 2) I've verified it's the correct username and password for the active directory account and that they have permissions on these network shares 3) I've fooled around with the WebProxy class with no luck (as I'm not entirely familiar with it) 4) I've tried impersonating the user by creating a windows token and passing the token as credentials (i've done this with similar websites) with no luck, plus this seemed a bit complicated for something I figured would be relatively easy.Its almost as if, the WebClient class isn't even using the credentials i've passed it.We've got it working now, but only by giving the "Computer" specific permissions on the network shares, which we'd like to avoid.

My ASP.NET MVC 2 application runs under built-in local NETWORK SERVICE account. I want to set up access permissions for the folder which resides in another computer, but in the same domain. I located that folder right-clicked to open its properties form, clicked to Security tab and pressed Add button which displayed Add user form with correct domain name in the location field. I referred to the account with following syntax:
<domain name><server name>$
because I learned that NETWORK SERVICE account uses machine account when connected to other computers in the domain. However, the system couldn't find the account, so refuses to add the account. Without the domain name it adds a user, but that user seems to be local user, not web server's NETWORK SERVICE account. What am I doing wrong?
By the way, the above syntax worked when I created login for the sql server which is different computer from the web server.

Listing folders in folders then creating arrays in JS for each of the folders?
Directory Structure:
I have a directory structure as follows;
ad_folder
--folderA
--folderB
--folderC
--anotherFolder
--etcfolder
--afile.aspx
--anotherfile.gif
ad_code
--folderA
--folderB
--afile.aspx
--anotherfile.gif
ad_prep
--folderA
--etcfolder
--afile.aspx
--anotherfile.gif
ad_bin
--etcfolder
--afile.aspx
--anotherfile.gif
other Folder
files folder
assetsfolder
index.aspx
web.config
image.gif
Task at hand:
I want code in VB.NET to create javascript arrays of the folder contents that can then be used on the client end. I only need arrays for all folders contained in folders starting with ad_ and an array for all the base folders . like so:
var folders=["ad_folder","ad_code","ad_prep","ad_bin"];
var ad_folder=["folderA","folderB","folderC","anotherFolder","etcfolder"];
var ad_code=["folderA","folderB"];
var ad_prep=["folderA","etcfolder"];
var ad_bin=["etcfolder"];
note that I do not know the number of or the names of the folders, they can be different in different cases, I only have the root path.

i got a web app where some users can upload to a folder images or files like pdfs.
Those users are authenticated by forms.
Well, in public areas, everyone can see those images and files.
I use for showing an httphandler, changing name, etc...
Id like to know if its possible set security like this:
- Folder with uploads, only with read permission for everyone that is not authenticated
- Folder with uploads, with write permission for authenticated users
Goal is that none can upload files if they are not autenticated and make the upload through the web form created for that.

I am developing an asp.net web application. I have to access one of the image in images folder in root directory. I am using following code in my code behind file.
string imageDirectory = HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~/images/");
string imageUrl = imageDirectory + "/img1.bmp";
This works fine in my local machine. My question is does this code work when I move my application to production ?

Often, out of sheer desperation I will end up enabling "Everyone" access on a folder that a web app is accessing (perhaps for file creation, reading, etc) because I can't figure which user account to enable access on.
Obviously, this is a very bad thing to do. Is there a way to determine what account IIS is using at that exact moment to access folders (and perhaps other resources like SQL Server, etc)?
Are there logs I can look at that will tell me? Or perhaps some other way? I usually use Windows Auth without impersonation. Not sure if that information is relevant.

See the code :
Protected Sub BtnServerDrive_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles BtnServerDrive.Click
Dim PartNumber As String = txtPartNumber.Text.Trim()
'Calculate the folder 4540 like container
Dim NumContainer as string = txtPartNumber.Text.Trim()
NumContainer = (txtPartNumber.Text.Trim / 1000 + 1).toString.Split(".").First
[Code] ....
How to achieve this results to access to the server drive to get images for view by using VB.NET or C# in code-behind. Servermappath, UNC, or else?

I have implemented membership and enable role based on. I have 2 roles "admin" and "super_admin" and once the user login, I want to redirect them to different folder based on their role. My guess is, the redirection need to be determined once the user clicked login on the login control and here is my code.
[Code]....
However, whenever the user login (regardless of admin or super_admin) the page keeps redirection to Anyone/Default.aspx.

In my project I have one folder called Administration (contains pages created for administrating the public part of the page) and in root I have public pages. What I want to do is to prevent anyone beside administrator to enter the Administration part and to make the Administration/Login.aspx default page for entering Administration part. This part makes me confused. I tried to create the access rules, but that wasn't the option because I upload the images to the Administration/Upload folder so if I deny the users the images on the public part can't be accessed.
The second problem I don't know how to solve is public part of the page where I want to allow commenting only to logged in users (users only, not the admin). How to check if user is logged in and authetificated and how to enable the commenting part of the form to him (textbox and submit button).
