Security :: Technical/performance Limit On The Number Of Roles An Application Handles?

Is there a technical/performance limit on the number of roles an application handles? I'm in the process of designing an application which I forsee having a lot of roles created, to be able to handle the degree of granularity the system should have (e.g., permissions per project, where there could be a lot of projects).
Would you recommend another approach other than using roles for this kind of granularity?

I have incorporated the asp.net membership and roles feature in my web app on my local dev setup that uses SQL 2008 Developer edition, all works as it should.
My remote system uses SQL 2005 express and I went through the process of creating the ASPNET membership tables via the "aspnet_regsql" command to my remote target database. I then created a few users, adjusted my app connection strings accordingly and uploaded.
My login page uses the "login" server control and when I try and login using credentials from one of the previously created users I get a "Your login attempt was not successful. try again." error. I know the users are in the DB as I can see then via the SQL Management studio on the remote DB. I have triple checked the username/passwords and I am definately entering the correct info. The connection strings are correct as the initial page renders content from another table in the DB. I am getting no errors.
My best guess at the moment is that SQL Express handles Membership/Roles connections differently to the full versions of SQL?

I am trying to find a solution to control the number of logins on asp.net application. I need to install the application in the client server, and set the number of licences. e.g. only 10 users are allowed to access the app.
Every time someone tries to login I need to check how many user are logged in, compare with the total allowed then authorize that user to proceed.
I tried with Certificate, but I couldn't see where to match the number of logged in users with the max number of allowed user.
Also I would like to use the IP address as identifier, then if I open 3 browser windows, it count only one user logged.
Basically this web application will be sold by licences. We need to control the logins per computer, and not per user, and block logins if the limit of logins are reached.

I have set Private Memory limit of 200mb in IIS 7 for an application pool. The Private Working Set memory(Task Manager) for the application is always below 125mb but the number of page faults have increased a lot and application cache is getting cleared frequently after setting the limit.
I haven't set any limit on Virtual Memory.why the cache is getting cleared even when the Private memory used is below the allocated memory?

I just launched my application to the production environment. I have a section on my website that is only accessed by users in the role administrator. (Here is the code:

It does fine on the development application. But on the production app the function is not working. I checked the database and everything is the same. What should I do?

I am creating a Web Application in asp.net 2.0 and sql server 2005.I want to use an existing database.
I have created a login and a signup page. Then i replace the new SQL database (the one that is created automaticly by the visual studio) with the exiting database I have.If I create a new user, the new user goes to the database and I can login with the new user. I cannot login with the existing users.If I go to the asp.net configuration, I only can see the new users I have created, I cannot see the users that were in the database already and I can't see the roles also.
I can I make the new application to recognize the users and roles of the existing database?

I am working on an application that resides on a development server on our internal network. The application was originally written to use Membership and Roles. We got busy almost a year ago before the app was finished, and now we are trying to get it ready to use internally.
The login page works just fine, but I have lost the ability to controls users and roles. I am running Visual Studio 2010 Professional now on a Windows 7 VM. I can open the application fine but there is no Web Administration Tool available for me to manage users or roles. If I go to Website -> in Visual Studio, there is no option for ASP.NET Configuration in the drop down menu. It simply isn't there.
How can I regain access to manage users and roles for this application? We are using Forms authentication and the database resides on a SQL Server 2005 instance on a separate box from the web server and my local VM.

I just wondering if the DataPager is equal to the MySQL limit command, if I use the limit I get the number of rows I asked for. Is it the same with the DataPager? Or does it get the full query table and only then filter?

I am working on an application using LINQ. Application performance is not up to par and my tests show that it is LINQ queries that are slow. I was wondering if anybody can recommend where I can find an article about optimizing LINQ performance maybe by compilation or other methods.

As mentioned in subject line I'm not able to configure role based website in IIS7. Please find details below.
Environment Details:-
.Net Framework: 3.5
Server: Windows 2008
Webserver: IIS7
Database: SQL Server 2008
Authentication Type: Form Based
Roles/Membership Provider: User defnied.
Problem:-
After setuped my website in iis7 while trying to Login in web page even I entered correct password it says Incorrect password in Login control.After long googling I suspecty that we need to add "Provider to trusted provider" to Authorized provider. I have gone http://www.iis.net/ConfigReference/system.webServer/management/trustedProviders/add but didn't works for me.
Can you anyone please help me in this.

Any limit to the number of nodes you can have in a treeview, I have been having some problems getting it to display with the panel I made. I have actually decided not to use the treeview, in fact may drop this part of the app altogether, but just wondering for future reference. I know if certain browsers have a limit for the the url, but can not seem to find anything, if there is anything, on a node limit. I am using asp.net 3.5 with VB and my browser is IE8, well the only one I tested on.

I have notice that the UpdatePanel post every field included on the form on every trigger.
But in most of my cases I use 2-3 UpdatePanels at the same page, and each one is independent.
When I click for update the one panel, then my page receive all the input data of the page (ok this is logical) but I won to read only this UpdatePanels data and act according, and not the other panels data.
So I see that a lot of traffic is happened this way.
So is there a way to say to one UpdatePanel - send only my input data, and not everything found on the page. ?

I would like to use the Role Membership and User Security database as my application database too. That is, just add the tables and relationships required by my application's data access layer to the Membership and Roles Database to save on hosting fees, (I have to pay extra for having two databases instead of one). Of course, the connection string would have to be adjusted, but I don't see a downside considering the application's database is actually an Access database. What can I say, it was a requirement at the time.

I have a html.dropdownlist on my webpage as follows: <%=Html.DropDownList("MyDropDown", Model.Data, new { @class = "dropdown"})%> I am populating the dropdown with ~80 items. The issue is that when I click the dropdown the list of items is rendered from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. How can I set up the dropdownlist so that it only displays a maximum of 20 items when the dropdown menu is clicked (i.e. user needs to scroll down to see items 21 - 80)?
I was anticipating (!) that there would be a html.dropdownlist property to control the number of displayed items that would allow something like the following e.g.: <% =Html.DropDownList("MyDropDown", Model.Data, new { @class = "dropdown", rows ="20"}) %> From research I have been doing on the msdn website it appears that there is no such property and that each browser has its own rules of how many items are displayed in a dropdownlist (?).

I have a report, which has two sections namely Labour and Spares.In labour section no of records per page must be limited to 5 records and the Spares section have to limit to 10 records per page.If either Labour or Parts exceed the max limit the records must be shown in the next page. Limiting one section by using formulas can be done easily ...but it is very difficult control two sections simultaneously.

Newb question: what is the standard practice for assigning roles to newly signed-on members. Is it usually manual or is there a way of automatically assigning roles. Being completely new to this, I am confronted by the issue of my site having three different roles that new members could fall into, but am unsure about how to assign each a role. I can't imagine having to go through the process manually if I have thousands of members.
