Security :: Two Separate Authentication And Authorization In A Single Website?

Jul 8, 2010

I have a web application that requires two separate authentication and authorization.

In the root webconfig i configure the security for authenticating and authorizing public users

I also need authentication and authorization for the back end. That is the administrator who will manage the web application.

For this i have a subdirectory "admin" that will contain all the functionality for the back end. In the "admin" subdirectory i have a second web.config and i tried to add all the security for the administrator but it does not let me

Is it possible to have to separate authorization and authentication for a single web application. All the details will be save in microsoft's sql tables generate (for example aspnet... tables)

Authorization Security Of Forms Authentication

May 18, 2010

I'm using Forms authentication in ASP.NET MVC website and I store user account login name in AuthCookie like this: FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(account.Login, false); I want to ask if there is a possibility that user on client side will somehow manage to change his login name in AuthCookie and thus he will be for example impersonated as someone with higher privileges and authorized to do more actions than he is normally supposed to have. Also is it better to save in this cookie user account login name or user account ID number?

Security :: Migrating Classic ASP Authentication & Authorization To Membership

Apr 28, 2010

I have an old website running fine in Classic ASP with large customer base registered onto the site. The current site allows users to have their own user name(unique) registered against an ID assigned to them. They can change the User name later as well provided it is still Unique in the database(Database is SQLServer2005).

The Problem: Now i want to move the website to .NET and want to use the .NET Membership. I know how to create the database structure in SQL Server through aspnet_regsql script but my problem is how should i import the existing username and passwords as the password stored in MembershipDB is Hashed (salt). Also i might want to allow admins to impersonate as users later.

Security :: Authentication With ActiveDirectory With Authorization With Custom Role Provider?

Feb 21, 2010

I've just started a small ASP.NET web application. In this project, I need to authenticate the users with Active Driectory. I managed to authenticate the users successfully with Active Directory. But with Authorization with Custom Role Provider, I'm so confused. You see, the user name and password are stored in AD. So, my approach is that after the LoggedIn event of the Login Control, I check if UserName is not yet stored in the Users table yet, then I will store the UserName there. Eventually, I have all the UserName of the AD users store in the Users table so I can assign Roles to the users.

Let's say I assigned UserA to RoleOne. After he logs in successfully, I do some query to look for his Roles.

Where do I keep the Role ticket? In the Cookie or in the session? How does the authorization of ASP.NET role provider work? I want to store the authentication ticket like ASP.NET role prover does too.

Security :: Finding Guideline For 'Role-based Authentication/authorization'?

Aug 26, 2010

In my asp.net website in VS-2005 with SQL-Server 2005 as db, I need to implement role-based Authentication/Authorization.

I am familiar to the practises used in role-based authentication..as I have previously worked on projects that used this method. However, my project lead used to design the database. Now I have an existing website where authentication has been set to anonymous by setting 'allow users="?"' in the authentication tags in web.config.

If I use the createUserWizard control and use the Membership.creatUser(.....) method in code behind will the asp.net security tables, like users, roles, userinrole etc get created on its own?

Security :: Role Based Authorization Using Froms Authentication Fails?

Oct 5, 2010

I am trying to implement a simple role based authorization using forms authentication in ASP.net. It works perfectly fine in my local system but fails when I deploy in production (shared hosting). Whenever I try to log in, rather than taking me to the default page in specified directory it throws me back to the login page. I suspect that there is some issues with the configuration but not sure where the problem is. The code is provided below:

Web.config (root):

[Code]....

Web.config (Member directory):

[Code]....

Login.aspx:

[Code]....

Global.asax:

[Code]....

Works fine in local machine but shared hosting is not taking the authenticated user to the pages inside the secured folders. What can be the issue?

Roles Authentication Works Using Authorization Attribute But Not Via Authorization In Web.config?

Mar 29, 2011

I am using ASP.NET MVC 3 and am trying to do something that should be really straight forward...

My application uses Forms authentication and that is working perfectly for controllers/actions. For example if I decorate either a controller or an action with the attribute below only members of the administrators group can view them:

[Authorize(Roles="Administrators")]

However I have a folder under the default Scripts folder called Admin. I only want members of the Administrators group to be able to access scripts within this directory so I created a new web.config in the directory with the following inside:

[code]....

However no matter whether a user is a member of the Administrators group or not they receive a 302 Found message and are then redirected to the login page.

If I change the web.config to allow user="*" then it works. It also works if I add an allow users="Username" for a specific user I am testing with.

Security :: Mixed Authorization On One Website?

Aug 24, 2010

I have an ASP.NET application that can be installed with either Forms Authentication or Windows Authentication. All of my customers install using Windows Authentication. I use Forms Authentication in-house as it is easier for me to work with different clients. But enough about that.

I have a module as part of my application for Mobile Users. It displays a very simple HTML interface for low bandwith phones and air cards. It seems that some phones when going to this type of site that is Windows Authentication, it throws an error saying that you aren't authorized to view the page. From a computer, it will ask for credentials.

What I would like to do is use Windows Authentication Or Forms for my Main Application, but in the MOBILE folder, it would be nice if I could use FORMS Authentication. Can I mix the two? Can I just add a Web.Config to the folder for the Mobile Files and put FORMS Authentication?

The only other way I thought of doing this is:

1) create a seperate installable application that is always FORMS Authentication that is not part of the main application. Which sucks, as I now have to manage two applications.

2) In the main Web.Config I can set that folder to have no authentication and it will be avail to anyone, and then enforce my own authentication on the few pages it contains.

Security :: Get The Website To Authorization Via The WCF Service And Membership - Roles And Profile

Jan 16, 2010

I have a client asp.net website that uses ASP.Net Membership, Roles and Profile providers and Login controls. I need to expand the application so was going to use WCF Workflows, the ASP.Net website will be hosted on a different server than the WCF Services so what I want to do is get the ASP.Net Website to auth via the WCF Service. So process will go:

ASP.Net Website ------------------> WCF Service ------------------> SQL Database (Membership, Roles, Profile, Workflow Persistence Data and Business Data)

I tried creating a custom Membership and Role providers but I have had problems managing the users (Membershipuser class) saying null when a vaild user has been return by the WCF Service as can access the properies but not the methods.

Security :: Single Sign-On SSO With Forms Authentication?

I did item number 1 which is "SSO for parent and child application in the virtual sub-directory" and it works fine BUT I can't seem to stay logged in because each time I leave and reenter the application I get redirected to the login page.

Is this an inherent feature of forms authentication?

What happened to authorized cookie generated by forms authentication?

While waiting for responses, I will look for answers.

Security :: Configure for Single Sign On Authentication?

Feb 17, 2010

We have intranet based web application in ASP.Net, needs to be configure for single sign on authentication at client place.

Our client has existing intranet based web site in classic ASP. After successful login to this site in asp, employee will have a link to access our web portal without entering any credentials again. Please note that both sites are having differnet virtual
directories or different domains.

Is there any way to achieve this sinlge sign on authentication than LDAP or Cokie based authentication.

Does Microsoft 3.5 provides some enterprise service to acheive the same?

Security :: Login Contols And A Web Service - Web Service To Do The Membership Authentication And Authorization?

Jan 23, 2010

I am writing two ASP.NET apps. One is a web service that provides xml data and the other is a web client that will use the service to display and manipulate data. I would like for the web service to do the membership authentication and authorization. Is there any way to simply point the login controls in my client application to the web service instead of to a database. I assume I would have to provide the necesarry methods in my web service interface, which would then use the membership provider database I created and pass the results back through to the client.

Is this possible? I have seen many articles on security provisioin from a web service but none has really been what I am looking for. I was hoping that, since my service and my client are both written in ASP.NET, there might be some built functionality that would benefit me.

I am running this on IIS 6 on a windows server 2003.

How do i go about doing this, if i even can do it? web.config, IIS console or do i need to make a new site for this one file alone?

Security :: Refreshing Single Sign-on Forms Authentication?

Jun 10, 2010

I've had no problems implementing CAS however I have hit an issue with its timeout. It appears my Uni has the timeout set to about 15 minutes. Some forms (specifically ones for our HR department) take a lot longer than 15 minutes to fill out. The result being that when they click the Save/Submit/whatever button, CAS refreshes its login, sends them back to the same page, and resets the page to default (since it's essentially reaccessing it).

Is there any easy way to force my SSO to refresh at set intervals? I tried to use another page (embedded in an iframe that I added to all .Master pages) whose page load contained:

Authentication And Security In Website?

May 27, 2010

I am using database with a list of username/passwords, and a simple web form that allows for users to enter their username/password.

When they submit the page, I simply do a stored procedure check to authenticate. If they are authorised, then their user details (e.g. username, dob, address, company address, other important info) are stored in a custom User object and then in a session. This custom User object that I created is used throughout the web application, and also in a sub-site (session sharing).

My question/problems are:Is my method of authentication the correct way to do things? I find users complaining that their session have expired although they "were not idle", possibly due the app pool recycling? They type large amounts of text and find that their session had expired and thus lose all the text typed in. I am uncertain whether the session does really reset sporadically but will Forms Authentication using cookies/cookiless resolve the issue?

Alternatively should I build and store the User Object in a session, cookie or something else instead in order to be more "correct" and avoid cases like in point #2.If I go down the Forms Authentication route, I believe I cannot store my custom User object in a Forms Authentication cookie so does it mean I would store the UserID and then recreate the user object on every page? Would this not be a huge increase on the server load?

We'd like to add a single page to the site that DOESN'T require the user to be logged in...so they can click the link on the logon page to view "T&C's" type info.

Is this possible?

Security :: Claims Based Authorization VS Role Permission Based Authorization?

Apr 26, 2010

Our team has recently implemented a role permission based authorization so that we can have granular control. This is similar to what Rockford Lhotka suggests herehttp://www.lhotka.net/weblog/PermissionbasedAuthorizationVsRolebasedAuthorization.aspx I have also read about the Claims based authorization which to me looks very similar to what we have. Can some one put in simple terms what the advantages of claims based authorization are.
