As per the increasing security threats, my site needs extreme care in terms of security in all aspects. I know asp.net has built in some security measures (Anti-forgery token, cross-site scripting, authentication, roles), but that is just not enough.I need a tool to test all possible security threats (Brute-force attacks, .... IP location, browser info ... )and a framework (open source is better) that handles all these concerns and let you build upon.
EDIT,So to narrow a bit, my primary concern is protecting the "login" page from all possible threats.
I am using Visual Studio 2008 Pro SP1. Every time I try to access the security tab in Web Application Administration Tools I get this message:
There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
I am working on a video streaming project, objective is to upload video to content provider's server and play it to the authenticated user only, it should not be accessible to unauthorized users, content provider provided APIs and Endpoints to pass security options but it seems not working when I pass those parameters to API along while uploading video streaming file, I need to know how I can do that, is there any other way that I can use rather than Content Provider's API Endpoints
View 1 RepliesI'm having a problem with opening ASP.NET configuration in Visual Studio 2008 Express. It just won't open. Nothing happens when I click ASP.NET configuration (under Website).
Odd things:
(1) It works fine (opens) in Visual Studio 2005 Express.
(2) I tried re-installing Visual Studio 2008 Express and the ASP.NET configuration opened fine for a couples of day, but now its not working again.
WARNING - Absolute beginner here with VS. I'm expecting a steep learning curve, but I'm up to it! I'm trying to create a website with membership/login. Followed the above walkthrough MANY time, and been very careful with the username and password entered, but I keep getting the message that the loging failed. The asp application name is "Membership" This is the whole thing, automatically created following the walkthrough, apart from adding 2 members - yes, did go to the memberpages folder at the set rules page.
Solution Explorer:
Solution 'membership' (1 project)
- //localhost/membership/
- App_Data
- ASPNETDB.MDF
aspnetdb_lpg.LDF
- MemberPages
web.config
- Default.aspx
Default.aspx.vb
- Login.aspx
Login.aspx.vb
webconfig
aspnet_Membership: (2 members)
PasswordFormat = 1
The ApplicationId for the 2 members is different - should it be?..........
We have just migrated our application from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and our database from Sql server 2005 to 2008. Everything was working great until i tried to login to the site.
As when i try to log into the site, i am surprisingly always getting "FALSE" from Membership.Validateuser (). I goggled it and now i know i am not the alone victim of this irritating bug. Our live site is going to be down...
I've created a page to add users, using the CreateUserWizard, I use the Login Control to login.
I have setup the config file to use my SQL server, not express
<remove name="LocalSqlServer"/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=xxxx;Password=xxxxxx" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
I go to the create user page, add a user.
I can SEE the user on the database using Server Management Studio...
I go to signon and get "Your login attempt was not successful. Please try again."
I have not customized the login control in any way. (OR the createuserwizard)
HOW can I tell where the Login tool is going to get userid and password info?
How can I tell if it is not finding the user or the password does not match?
How can I test an application that I am publishing to a remote provider's IIS7 hosted site, with the VS2008 development server that is built in with VS2008 on an XP Machine?
My membership/roles work perfectly up on the remote host. On ths hosted IIS7 site when I try to access a secure directory it redirects to login, and I am able to login, however when I launch (debug - F5) from VS2008, it will provide that folder/resource, no questions asked. Same build, config, etc... nothing has changed.
I am running XP, and local IIS version installed is 5.1.
My guess is what is happening is that the new format required in the web.config is configured properly for IIS7 deployment, which is why it works remotely, but when running locally through VS2008/XP it is running with an older version on IIS and does not recoginize the new tags.
How to use tools like localize substitution?

View 11 Replies I have a ASP.net 4.0 which has to generate a PDF and docx file with the same content. Ofcourse the conversion will take place on server so Office Automation is not an option
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q257757#kb2)
Im faced with the following descision: Use OpenXML SDK to create the docx and some other free tool to create the PDF.OR ,Buy a SW like Aspose so I only will have to create the docx and then generate a PDF from the docx.
What is your opinion about this? Aspose Word costs $900, will I save as much time with it to be worth it?If I choose the free option will I have a hard time getting the docx and pdf to look exactly the same?
Is there any good search tools for asp.net I can buy to carry out search indexes easily on data I have in my database? What I require is something that would carry out a general site search of articles but also faceted search as well. Faceted search is quite important feature.
View 2 RepliesI am trying to get a captcha web control to display, but it isn't going into the HttpHandler that I created. This isn't my project and it is quite big so I'm not sure what is going on. Is there any tools or techniques to see which handler is being called.
View 4 RepliesCan you recommend any tools? Should we build our own? Should we create the sitemap manually?

I want to search a particular topic by putting keyword in a textbox.
I'm currently trying to install the "new" Microsoft WebMatrix Beta 2 (a web programming IDE). I was trying to use Web Platform Installer for this. But it 404's on the SQL Compact 4.0 CPT2 and it's tools. I was able to get the runtime from the Microsoft downloads page but the tools I am not able to find. I can not install WebMatrix because the tools are a prerequisite.
View 2 RepliesI removed mvc3 tools for visual studio, and now it seems no matter how much reinstalling, or un-installing i do i cant get razor project templates or intellisence for razor.I have even removed the visual studio folder and visual studio hives in the registry but still the same. I seem to remember a simular problem with mvc2 tools, that the installer doers not reconize it as un-installed and therefore does not re-install it.how can i re-install mvc tools so VS reconises razor, or remove all trace of visual studio and mvc3 so that i can start again?

View 3 RepliesI'm developing in C# ASP.NET and my lines of JavaScript start to grow quite a lot and I feel there most be some better tools for the actual JS development rather than working in Visual Studio.
View 2 RepliesI use VS 2010 (C#) with SQL server 2008. I prefer to use the entity framework.
I would like to know are there any good developer tools/ways to simplify work?
I got to know about NGen (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163808.aspx) tool and
very much interested in this.
Will this create machine code? What will the output format, an EXE?
How must speed will it improve over interpreted MSIL?
Even with NGen output will we still need the CLR to run it? If so why, because in that case still CLR is interpreting isn't it?
I am new to the code generation tools and I would like to know how does a tool like LLBGen Pro compares with the Entity Framework? On top of that my boos is really looking into a tool called CodeOnTime http://codeontime.com/default.aspx because he likes their good UI support.I am asking here because I really want an unbiased opinion.I am not sure if LLBGen can also generate the UI. So far all the development in the house we do it the classic way coding each layer manually. However we are in need of a fast prototyping tool.
