Jun 22, 2010I have 2 projects, where they both can upload attachments into a directory.
The problem is how do you get the projects to be able to access each others attachments or even save these attachments in the same folder...
At the moment my ProjectA saves uploads into its "uploads" folder... But when you are running ProjectB it doesnt have the same uploads folder (if that makes sense)
e.g.
ProjectA uploads folder: localhost:50732uploads
ProjectB uploads folder: localhost:50331uploads
I want these projects to be able to view attachments that the "other" project has uploaded.

Feb 2, 2011Is there a way to share user controls between various projects ?
I have created user controls like login control, menu control, header control, lost password control and etc and they are all connected to sql database for data.
I would like to share these between various web site projects, it means I have same functionality and the only modifications I can do is within CSS styles.
Do I need to copy modules or is there a way to keep them as shared classes/modules and call what I need every time I need it?

Dec 3, 2010I am looking for general direction on the best practice here. I have a class that I want to share between two different forms in two projects that are associated. The two forms are in seperate projects but both projects load together as I have added the second project to the first. I also have a class that I want to share between these two projects which will cause me to add another project to this solution with will mean I will have three projects in my solution. My question is how do I best share this class?
I believe the only way to do this is to add the class in the reference in both of the form projects?... Is this correct ? I'd really like to just reference the class and inherit it in the source code without adding it as a reference but I am feeling that I can't do that. I am obviously pressed for time and working on other projects and a I am a experienced coder with only about 1 year of C# experience...

Oct 20, 2010I'm trying to share settings between two projects: a console app and a WPF app. The WPF app only exists to view and change those settings.
So in my console app, I wrote the following class...

My WPF app has a reference to the console application, so it can access the members of this Settings class.
So you'd think that if I use the WPF app to change one of these settings, then the next time I run the console app that changed setting would be available, but that is not the case. I'll change the masUserID setting from Bill to Ted, for example, but when I launch the console app it shows the setting is still Bill. If I run the WPF app, it's set to Ted.

Jul 14, 2010i have two solutions, 1. user management and 2. travel management. i publish the user management solution to [URL] and i publish the travel management to [URL] here i face the problem. the default home page would be [URL], its a windows authentication in page load, i capture the username, pass it to procedure which will fetch me his credentials on access. i store these in a session.
in the home page i have link to navigate to travel page, when i try to access the sessions in travel page, its empty. i tried printing the session id in both user management and travel, both are same but the sessions created in user management are empty in travel. what would be problem here and how can i resolve this.
Visual Studio :: Sharing A Solution File - Projects Settings/Configurations Maintenance?
Sep 1, 2010I am using VS2005 and I have a solution file (.SLN) which has 8 projects. I moved the solution file to a different path on a shared folder to have better organization of my projects and to allow access to the solution/projects from any computer on the network. After that, I edited the .SLN file so that the path of the projects in the solution file are correct (all on shared folders).
After that, I opened the .SLN and everything seemd to be working fine. However, I notcied that the "Start Options" of the website part of the solution file is missing the "Start Options", ie, the Start Options are reset to default values. I think also, but not sure, some other settings of the Solution/Projects have been reset.
Questions:
1. Where the Web Site "Start Options" are stored ?
2. How I can maintain the Start Options and similar settings if the .SLN file is moved or opened from different computers on the network ?
3. I am not using an team development tools, only plain (vanilla) VS 2005 Prof. Edition. Is it possible to have 2 or more developers work on the same solution/projects (shared on the network), if both developers will coordinate manually simultanous access to the porject files/resources/source code ?

Task at hand:
I want code in VB.NET to create javascript arrays of the folder contents that can then be used on the client end. I only need arrays for all folders contained in folders starting with ad_ and an array for all the base folders . like so:
var folders=["ad_folder","ad_code","ad_prep","ad_bin"];
var ad_folder=["folderA","folderB","folderC","anotherFolder","etcfolder"];
var ad_code=["folderA","folderB"];
var ad_prep=["folderA","etcfolder"];
var ad_bin=["etcfolder"];
note that I do not know the number of or the names of the folders, they can be different in different cases, I only have the root path.

Visual Studio :: Old Projects Not Showing Up In The Start Page Recent Projects List?
Jan 31, 2011I just moved to a new PC and installed VS 2010. I copied all of my websites over from the old machine and now when I open the old websites on the new machine, they do not show up in my recent projects list on the start page. New websites that I make do show up there but the old ones do not. This is very inconvenient. Is there a way to make old projects that I open show up in the list?
This brings up another question. Is there a way to make a shortcut that will open VS2010 up with a website already loaded so that I don't have to go through the file open dialog every time?

Jun 7, 2010I have a multi-tiered application. I would like to publish the class libraries to UI developers to let them add to their web or windows projects to add all the functionality.
I would like to restrict access so only a certain project can be referenced. The reason is so that they do not refer to the data access layer directly and start making calls that would bypass the business logic built into the business tier.
UI->>Business Logic->>Data Access
So in other words, BL and DA are deployed as compiled assemblies. BL references DA. UI will reference BL, but I would like to strictly prevent any other project from referencing DA directly.

One is normal site for visitors use and the other one is admin back-end which is going to be separated by sub-domains like [URL] and [URL] The scenario is like admin will add a new item(e.g product) with image and [URL] will use that image to display product. Both application are sharing one db. so there is no problem to get the item details that is coming from the db. but for item image that has been uploaded in admin directory([URL]- any idea how to get it from general domain [URL]to display? Also what is the best way of separating the resources like image files or even css or js files across sites and how to access them?

Oct 14, 2010I have a web application (MainApplication) where many of the pages contain a custom Web Control that looks for some content in a cache. If it can't find any data within the cache, then it goes out to a database for the content. After retrieving the content, the Control displays the content on the page.
There is a web application (CMS) in a subdirectory within the aforementioned web application. Users use this CMS to update the content pulled in by the MainApplication.
When a user updates some content using the CMS, I need the CMS to clear the relevant portion of the cache used by the MainApplication. The problem is that, as two different web applications, they can't simply interact with the same static cache object.
The ideal solution would be to somehow share an instance of a cache object between both web applications.
Failing that, what would be the best (performance-wise) way of communicating between the two web applications? Obviously, writing/reading to a database would defeat the purpose. I was thinking about a flat file?

Sharing Columns Between GridViews?
Sep 17, 2010Is there a way to define a <Columns> outside of a GridView in my .aspx file such that I can use those <Columns> in multiple GridViews in the same page? I have two GridViews that will have the same DataSource type, just with different content, and I'd rather not repeat all my customized TemplateFields in each. This seems simple enough, it's just I'm new to ASP.NET. Coming from WPF, it feels like I should be able to define my <Columns> in some parent "Resources" area, define its TargetType, give it a key, and then reference that key wherever I want those <Columns> to appear.

Feb 4, 2010If there is a self contained web app, let's use the Screw Turn Wiki as an example, that utilizes the App_Data to store the MDF, is there any way another web app, living in the same domain, can also use that MDF?
Example IIS Setup:

My WWW web app would like to pull some data from the WIKI app. Without moving the MDF to a full fledged SQL Server is there a way to do this? Also note, the WIKI app is an installed app so I don't have access to its source.

I am using ADO.NET Entity framework, and was thinking of a creating a DAL using the Repository pattern.Then using the RIA Services as a dummy middle man to connect Silverlight and ASP.NET. Is this a solid plan or are there other better solutions out there?
