State Management :: How To Maintain User Log State

Mar 10, 2011

I have one web application. In that, I have two pages. One is view/edit page and another one is login page. The view/edit page contains one edit button and one login button.

First I execute view/edit page, at that time I dont want to show edit button. When user clicks login button, the page will be redirected to login page, where the user has to enter username and password. If user enters both correct, again the page will be redirected back to view/edit page. This time, the edit button has to be shown to make some modifications, since the user is authenticated.

I tried this thing by using session with cookieless. It works perfectly but some times it shows web page not available. I made session timeout 120 minutes and cookieless is true. In URL session ID also available.

So, whats the alternate way to maintain user log state or whats wrong in web.config file.

State Management :: Serializing To File System To Maintain State?

Oct 25, 2010

I have a system that has several large objects that need to be built and populated each and every time, and these objects may be accessed quite often as well. As a strategy, caching would not be that good for me because there are potentially thousands of these objects which are fairly large. So I propose to serialize the objects to the file system and then deserialize it when I need those objects again. I have several classes that need this serialization functionality.

These objects change as well, so on the next access I check if there were any changes and then I grab only the changes and edit the object, and then reserialize the object.

My question is what is the best way to do this, since I have several classes ..

State Management :: Accessing Session State In A User Control?

Sep 1, 2010

We have a web site that implements a custom SiteMapProvider using a User Control added in the master page. I need to be able to limit the sitemap nodes added depending on the logged in user, that is, certain users should not see certain sitemap nodes. Currently, the login processing code determines if users are in the certain category or role and then sets a value in session state, for example, Session["UserInRoleXXX"] = "Yes"; I tried changing the code in the user control to check the session state, but I got the following error: NullReferenceException ... Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Can session state be accessed in a user control?

State Management :: Best Way To Manage User State And/or Sessions?

Mar 25, 2010

My prior asp.net apps used windows authentication on an intranet. Now I'm developing an app for the internet and am stumbling over how to properly manage user sessions and state.

I first developed my web site functionality; created the SQL DB and got all of the pages to properly handle the data. Then, I installed the SQL Membership database and was able to get the CreateUser, Login, Logout pages to work. On the Verify process for the Userid, I added a step that will take the membership UserId value and create a Company record in my tables and link my CompanyId key with the UserId.

At Login time, I create a CompanyId session variable; each page uses it to retrieve records for the user. When Session Timeout occurs and the user click a link to another page, the app redirects properly to a Login page. However, if the time expires and then the user interacts on that same page, 'Object not set to an instance of the object' - the CompanyId session variable has expired.

What is the proper way to handle this? I'd like the page to automatically redirect to a TimedOut page (this would happen automatically without the user doing anything).

I considered writing a Function where I pass the Session variable I want and the Function sees if it exists; if it doesn't it would do a Response.Redirect to the TimedOut page...I can't get the Redirect to work in a Class Function ('reference to a non-shared member...').

I assumed that I should set CompanyId as a Session Variable so each page knows the user to get data for. Another approach is to use the membership User and if it is still valid, do a DB lookup to get the CompanyId. I did not choose this because I felt that it would increase DB traffic and web traffic.

Here are several relevant settings from my web.config:

<sessionState cookieless="UseDeviceProfile" />
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="~/UserTasks/Login.aspx" />

It feels like there should be a straightforward answer to this but I am missing it.

With the above code i got the expected result i,e. i can zip the files and save on client system. But the problem is after saving/canceling the zip file if user clicks on linkbutton in the page_load event Session[getdata] became null. there is no data in Session. what might be the problem? Actually it should redirect to homepage.aspx but its going to login.aspx because Session[getdata] is null.

State Management :: Application State And Session State?

User Interface: 2 Labels; 1 Buttons

Requirements: Create a Web Page in ASPx that will do the following:

1)One label will provide a count of how many times Button 1 has been clicked in the current session.

2)One label will provide a count of how many times Button 1 has been clicked by all users of the application. The Application Code for the Button should start at 100 (set this in the Global.asax file). this is what i have so far but i cant seem to get the application state to work properly.

State Management :: Maintain Query String Parameter In All Pages - It Gets Lost In Subsequent Pages

Aug 9, 2010

In my Application_BeginRequest I have code that gets query string value ?c=FR or ?c=US and store it in cookies.Based on query string value I have either US or FR,locale is selected from locale table.If ?c=FR then locale will be fr-FR and if it is US then locale will be en-US.My code is below.

void Application_BeginRequest(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
LocalizationInfo loc = GetLocalizationInfo();
if (Request.Cookies["Localization"] == null)
Response.Cookies.Add(new HttpCookie("Localization"));
Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"] = loc.Country;
CultureInfo objCI = new CultureInfo(loc.Locale);
Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = objCI;
Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = objCI;
}
public static LocalizationInfo GetLocalizationInfo()
{
string countryCode = "";
string sLocale = "";
if (HttpContext.Current.Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"] != null)
countryCode = HttpContext.Current.Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"];
if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["c"]))
countryCode = HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["c"];
if (countryCode == "")
countryCode = "US";
sLocale = HertzRent2Buy.DataProvider.ListData.GetLocale(countryCode);
LocalizationInfo ret = new LocalizationInfo();
ret.Country = countryCode;
ret.Locale = sLocale;
return ret;
}
public struct LocalizationInfo
{
public string Country;
public string Locale;
}

Now when I run the project and in query string I set [URL] then for the very first page(home page itself) it shows me French translation,but on subsequent page,that query string parameter ?c=FR is lost and hence it shows be English translation not French translation since it does not pickup French resx file.If I manually append ?c=FR in subsequent page then it shows the French translation.Is there is way how I can make that query stringparameter available in all pages.Structure is there to hold Country and locale variables. In all pages I am calling GetLocalizationInfo() method as follow

LocalizationInfo info = some.DataProvider.Globalization.GetLocalizationInfo();

And I create instance info to pass locale and country as parameter. GetProductDetails(id,info.Country,info.locale). why my query string parameters get lost on subsequent pages.

State Management :: Session Mode State Server - Sending Asynchronous Request

Nov 5, 2010

Customer were getting "View State Validation Error" due to worker process recycling at our production webserver and to fix that i applied machinekey and then move my Session state Mode from In Proc to State Server to retain session data and not kick out the customer to relogin. I had serialization issue with one object which has to be stored in session but when i moved it out of session i could able to resolve the issue.

But doing all these i was partly successfull in keeping the user in their session when Worker Process recycle event occurs.I was able to refresh the page or make a post back by clicking the refresh button and also able to retain the session values. But the Problem occurs when sending asynchronous request to server which we do periodically every 15 minutes from the moment the user logs in.The web page doesnot update data on website when sending asynchronous request.By Debugging I found at this particular code point it fails to make a postback which is required.

<%=GetHintFromServer%> (When there is no Worker Process recycle i t gets replaced by
WebForm_DoCallback('__Page',message,ShowHint,null,null,false) on postback) Everything works fine when there is no Worker Process Recyling but when it happens looks like sending request asynchronously using javascript fails .Remember When I make a post back by manually clicking submit button everything works fine.

SendRequest(Asynchronous)
function SendRequest(msg, isBusy, chartMsg, vesselMsg)
{
try
{
//confirm("msg"+msg+"isBusy"+isBusy+"chartMsg"+chartMsg+"VesselMsg"+vesselMsg);
_busy = isBusy;
if(chartMsg != null)
{
//confirm("chartMsg"+chartMsg);
_element.SetMessage(true, chartMsg);
}
if(vesselMsg != null)
{
confirm("chartMsg"+vesselMsg);
_element.ShowVesselLoading(true, vesselMsg);
}
_stuckWatchdog = setTimeout( "ClearPendingRequest();", 60000);
var message = msg;
var context = '';
<%=GetHintFromServer%>
}
catch(e)
{
alert( "Exception error on SendRequest(): " + e);
}

State Management :: Custom Control: State Restoring For Controls Created With CreateChildControls

Dec 22, 2010

Let me explain, describing the scenario:In a custom server control (in my case, derived from CompositeControl), in the overidden CreateChildControls method I create a complex tree of subcontrols, using information from a db.The db provides both information on which controls I need to create (the user interface's structure) and the data used to fill these controls.Than the user can interact with the control and change the data (that becomes different to what stored on db).

My custom control lives in the same page where there are other controls, obviously.And these controls can cause a postback at any time.What I need is that my custom control keeps the data entered by the user across these postback, without reverting to the original data and loose the user data entry.

Here is the first doubt:

1)I create the subcontrols dinamically in the CreateChildControls at any page refresh (both on first call than on postback).I know that the framework solves the reference between the posted data and the controls I create in the CreateChildControls in order to set properties and raise control events, but can you tell me when and how it actually does this? In which phase of page life cycle? What happens after the CreateChildControls?

A second doubt:2)If the user interface structure must change as a consequence of the data entered, I had to execute CreateChildControls twice (the first time to recreate the original interface to get the events and the second time to create the new interface)
In which phase of page/control lifecycle do I have to make the second call to CreateChildControls? I do it on Prerender now, but is it right or wrong, and why?

State Management :: Unable To Serialize The Session State In 'StateServer' And 'SQLServer' Mode

Dec 12, 2010

I am new to .net 4.0 and am using EF Model and SessionState Mode=SqlServer and I am getting this error below:

Unable to serialize the session state. In 'StateServer' and 'SQLServer' mode, ASP.NET will serialize the session state objects, and as a result non-serializable objects or MarshalByRef objects are not permitted. The same restriction applies if similar serialization is done by the custom session state store in 'Custom' mode.

I checked the stack trace and its complaining about

[assembly: global::System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EdmSchemaAttribute()]
[assembly: global::System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EdmRelationshipAttribute("PoplarGroveModel", "tblMenuRole", "tblMenu", global::System.Data.Metadata.Edm.RelationshipMultiplicity.Many, typeof(PoplarGroveDataModel.Menu), "tblRole",

[Code].....

I marked it as serializable but then it complains about System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext is not marked as serializable and hence throws the same error.

State Management :: Asp Create New Session State Cookie Each Time On Debugging?

Jan 21, 2011

I'm using the following line of code to display the number of users currently logged on:

lblNoOfUsers.Text = Membership.GetNumberOfUsersOnline().ToString()

I'm still debugging my application so it's on the local server. As I debug and stop then debug again, eventually lblNoOfUsers.text turns to "0" instead of "1", even as I'm navigating my application. It only turns to "1" again if I log out and sign back in. It's almost as though Membership.GetNumberOfUsersOnline my login are referencing two different session states. How is this possible? Does asp.net create a new session state cookie each time I start debugging?
