State Management :: What Temporary Storage Should Use For Holding Edited Data

May 17, 2010

I need to do edit funtionality for registration forms (5 in number) in a trading system. Requirment is to do it in a way that user edit details in a form and click next or previous button and data will be saved somewhere until user reach last form and click save button. On this click all changes will be updated to database table. where I should hold this temporary data ? I cant use database tables for this. There come many options in mind like cach, session and application variables. But I am confuse which way will best performance wise. There are 5 forms and every form has 15 to 25 fields in it. I dont know expected no of users but hoping a good count.

State Management :: Storing Temporary And Large Amount Of Data?

Jun 9, 2010

I have a scenario for which I wanted the best solution in asp.net c#. My application allows users to retrieve search data from database, this data is the users own temporary list of records which they can search, delete records or select them. All these actions are only on users temporary data list and not on the data base. I have currently carried out this functionality using data table which is stored in session. This method is causing problems when huge amounts of data is held in session (eg: 7000 records). I need a best possible solution for this. Is creating temporary tables an option? Can it be assigned to particular user sessions? Please point me to the right direction and right articles.

State Management :: Variable To Store Temporary Page Data?

Sep 29, 2010

I'm working on a web page that is going to be used to enter data into a database. The page is going to be dynamic in that the user has the ability to add a row to the table with the same fields, ie lname1, fname1, mi1 then lname2, fname2, mi2

I'm wanting to use a variable to keep track of how many lines there are so that when I generate the added line I am creating a new field with the ID of lname+# . Whats the best way to do this, a global variable, session variable? As side note, first time programming in .Net or C#.

State Management :: Storage Options When ViewState Isn't Available?

Sep 24, 2010

I have a project in which several modules need to retrieve assorted scalar values (ie. int, string, etc.) before the ViewState is reestablished. To date I've been using the Session object for this though things are getting somewhat unwieldly now. Also Module A's session variables should really only be accessible by Module A, Module B's session variables really only accessible by Module B, etc. - yet with the Session object no such scope is available.

C# - Can Use HashTable For Temporary Data Storage After Reading Data From Database

Feb 5, 2010

I am looking for opinions and best coding practices.I need to get info from a database with a query such as SELECT this, that FROM MyDB (returning 2 fields). Would it be wrong to use a hashtable for temporary storage?Is there a better way to accomplish the same thing? What about if I am returning more than 2 fields, would it be best to step up to a DataSet or something?

Forms Data Controls :: Multiple Dropdownlists Not Holding State After Response Redirect?

Nov 11, 2010

I hope somebody can guide me to overcome below challenge.

My form has three dropdownlist controls and one listview. Everything works fine if I don't try to pass multiple querystrings to get different URL on the same page. But challenge comes when I try to pass multiple querystrings to show different URL's for SEO.

Following are the ID's:

1. DropDownList1= Country

2. DropDownList2= State

3. DropDownList3= City

4. Listview1= Resturants (I am not including Code .....yet)

With my code DropDownList1 holds the state and passes the value to URL OK .When I try to select
different value in DropDownList2 or DropDownList3 are able to
pass the vaule to URL but in the form they stay on the first item and doesn't change and so does Listview1.

Here is my code:

C# - Custom Session State Provider Needed For DB Storage?

Jan 16, 2011

I know this question is related to many others, but please bear with me.I am trying an experiment to store all information in database tables instead of the ASP.NET session. In ASP.NET 4 one can create a custom provider for session. So, again should I implement a Custom Session-State Provider or should I just disable session (in Web.config)?From the comments my question can be misunderstood. Hopefully this tidbit will help clarify:don't want to store the session in the database. I want to store information in the database that you would typically store in the session. One reason why: I don't want to carry around a session on every page, especially if thapage doesn't care about 90 percent of the information in the session

Use Sharepoint As The Back - End Versioning And Storage For Custom Document Management Website?

Apr 16, 2010

I want to build a custom document management web application that ties in with sharepoint for the actual document versioning and storage. I'm hoping for something like a sharepoint widget that I can plug into my web application that would allow me to tie in with sharepoint and download documents, make edits to them, and upload them back to sharepoint, with sharepoint handling all of the versioning and storage. Basically I'm looking for a sharepoint API. If WSS is the answer to this, are there licensing issues that I need to consider?

State Management :: Storing Large Data In Session State?

Sep 18, 2010

We have a scenario where we need to store large tables of data on Session in asp.net page. on a highlevel we have to store following data

1> A table (table 1) with 1000 rows and 8 to 10 columns.

2> A table(table 2) with 500 rows and 8 to 10 columns (actually user can add the data from table 1 to table 2, so as user keeps on adding from table 1 we remove the data and put it in table 2)

3> Another table(table 3) with 1000-1200 rows each having 3 columns.

We are having a webfarm, so we need to store it in either SateServer of Oracle DB,What would be the performance implications of storing such huge data on the server.

One more thing is at any point of time max of 70 -80 people will be accessing our website, so will this cause any performance degradation?

State Management :: Application State And Session State?

Oct 2, 2010

User Interface: 2 Labels; 1 Buttons

Requirements: Create a Web Page in ASPx that will do the following:

1)One label will provide a count of how many times Button 1 has been clicked in the current session.

2)One label will provide a count of how many times Button 1 has been clicked by all users of the application. The Application Code for the Button should start at 100 (set this in the Global.asax file). this is what i have so far but i cant seem to get the application state to work properly.

State Management :: Session Mode State Server - Sending Asynchronous Request

Nov 5, 2010

Customer were getting "View State Validation Error" due to worker process recycling at our production webserver and to fix that i applied machinekey and then move my Session state Mode from In Proc to State Server to retain session data and not kick out the customer to relogin. I had serialization issue with one object which has to be stored in session but when i moved it out of session i could able to resolve the issue.

But doing all these i was partly successfull in keeping the user in their session when Worker Process recycle event occurs.I was able to refresh the page or make a post back by clicking the refresh button and also able to retain the session values. But the Problem occurs when sending asynchronous request to server which we do periodically every 15 minutes from the moment the user logs in.The web page doesnot update data on website when sending asynchronous request.By Debugging I found at this particular code point it fails to make a postback which is required.

<%=GetHintFromServer%> (When there is no Worker Process recycle i t gets replaced by
WebForm_DoCallback('__Page',message,ShowHint,null,null,false) on postback) Everything works fine when there is no Worker Process Recyling but when it happens looks like sending request asynchronously using javascript fails .Remember When I make a post back by manually clicking submit button everything works fine.

SendRequest(Asynchronous)
function SendRequest(msg, isBusy, chartMsg, vesselMsg)
{
try
{
//confirm("msg"+msg+"isBusy"+isBusy+"chartMsg"+chartMsg+"VesselMsg"+vesselMsg);
_busy = isBusy;
if(chartMsg != null)
{
//confirm("chartMsg"+chartMsg);
_element.SetMessage(true, chartMsg);
}
if(vesselMsg != null)
{
confirm("chartMsg"+vesselMsg);
_element.ShowVesselLoading(true, vesselMsg);
}
_stuckWatchdog = setTimeout( "ClearPendingRequest();", 60000);
var message = msg;
var context = '';
<%=GetHintFromServer%>
}
catch(e)
{
alert( "Exception error on SendRequest(): " + e);
}

State Management :: Custom Control: State Restoring For Controls Created With CreateChildControls

Dec 22, 2010

Let me explain, describing the scenario:In a custom server control (in my case, derived from CompositeControl), in the overidden CreateChildControls method I create a complex tree of subcontrols, using information from a db.The db provides both information on which controls I need to create (the user interface's structure) and the data used to fill these controls.Than the user can interact with the control and change the data (that becomes different to what stored on db).

My custom control lives in the same page where there are other controls, obviously.And these controls can cause a postback at any time.What I need is that my custom control keeps the data entered by the user across these postback, without reverting to the original data and loose the user data entry.

Here is the first doubt:

1)I create the subcontrols dinamically in the CreateChildControls at any page refresh (both on first call than on postback).I know that the framework solves the reference between the posted data and the controls I create in the CreateChildControls in order to set properties and raise control events, but can you tell me when and how it actually does this? In which phase of page life cycle? What happens after the CreateChildControls?

A second doubt:2)If the user interface structure must change as a consequence of the data entered, I had to execute CreateChildControls twice (the first time to recreate the original interface to get the events and the second time to create the new interface)
In which phase of page/control lifecycle do I have to make the second call to CreateChildControls? I do it on Prerender now, but is it right or wrong, and why?

State Management :: Unable To Serialize The Session State In 'StateServer' And 'SQLServer' Mode

Dec 12, 2010

I am new to .net 4.0 and am using EF Model and SessionState Mode=SqlServer and I am getting this error below:

Unable to serialize the session state. In 'StateServer' and 'SQLServer' mode, ASP.NET will serialize the session state objects, and as a result non-serializable objects or MarshalByRef objects are not permitted. The same restriction applies if similar serialization is done by the custom session state store in 'Custom' mode.

I checked the stack trace and its complaining about

[assembly: global::System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EdmSchemaAttribute()]
[assembly: global::System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EdmRelationshipAttribute("PoplarGroveModel", "tblMenuRole", "tblMenu", global::System.Data.Metadata.Edm.RelationshipMultiplicity.Many, typeof(PoplarGroveDataModel.Menu), "tblRole",

[Code].....

I marked it as serializable but then it complains about System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext is not marked as serializable and hence throws the same error.
